Thought for the week; “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” Aristotle Aside from the numerous trips and academic activity that you will read about in our Primary and Secondary news sections, we ended our first week on a high note with celebrations for World Book Day and Teacher’s Day. It was great to see so many students and staff joining in with the spirit of these events. This week we continue in a similar vein. Orbital’s annual conference returns this year with both online and presential conference components and we are proud to report that BSQ is taking a leading role in this event. This will mean that I will be off campus during the first week of May. All urgent academic matters will be dealt with by our respective Heads of School, Mr. Lewis Hutchinson and Mr. Lee Moors, who will be in contact with me should the need arise. Have an excellent week everyone. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary Monday, 1st May: NO CLASSES – National Holiday David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, Last week saw a wonderful return to school after the break. Learning was quickly back in full swing and as always, the students were back in the school routine well. Last Friday saw the superb ´World Book Day´ celebration. The costumes were truly fantastic, and the children had a wonderful time engaging with reading, listening to authors discuss their craft, parading in their costumes, and searching the campus for clues about famous books. Last week also saw a trip for students involved in the World Food Programme recipe book project. Students headed to the supermarket to procure the items for their recipes whilst also examining nutritional values carefully. We cannot wait to see the finished recipe book! On Tuesday, children from Years 1 to 6 will be enjoying ´Careers Day. ´ On this day, a range of professionals from different areas will present to the children to hopefully inspire them to consider their future vocations. We have a huge range of professions being discussed from surgeons to volcanologists, microbiologists to firefighters and many things in between. A huge thank you to all the people giving up their time to support the day. This Wednesday, Year 5 will be heading to Jardin Alado for inspiration on their current literacy topic of persuasive writing. They will be examining the for and against arguments of keeping animals in captivity. We hope that they have a great time. Before the break, primary teachers completed the student assessments for Parcial 3. You can expect the Parcial 3 report, which is grades only, around the end of the month. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary English Enrichment Primary Club We have had a great turn out on our English Enrichment Club, in Primary. Parents and students have learned together in very special sessions. BSQ – Secondary 21st April 2023 After a much deserved Easter break we welcomed everyone back on Monday to what was a very successful week. Year 11 and 13 are finally at the end of their journey at school, with both groups starting study leave as they revise for and sit their formal international examinations. I received some words of encouragement and congratulations from Jonathan Dey, our Regional Head of School’s at Orbital: “As many students all around the world soon head off to study leave, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish your pupils the very best of luck. Please thank your teams for their hard work and commitment getting the students ready for the iGCSE, and IB Diploma Programme exams……. ……. with many IB students losing their iGCSE’s to lockdown – they will be feeling the pressure of these Board exams even more than usual cohorts. We all know how much time tutors and pastoral support colleagues have to spend with the exam students at this time of year”. I am also extremely proud of them all for the resilience and determination that they have shown over the last couple of years. It has been an incredibly challenging journey for all to navigate with significant character tests and life experiences that will inevitably better prepare them for the challenges in the future as an adult. I would also like to congratulate and thank our extremely dedicated colleagues who have nurtured them educationally and pastorally on this journey to the successful position they have each achieved. Well done to all. Using a drama metaphor, ‘they are now in the last act – the crescendo’. Perhaps this is where the focus should escalate even higher to realise deserved reward. To quote an educational leader who has influenced me in my leadership journey over the last 15 years or so, an apt final comment is perhaps “You will get what you deserve!” Focus on the revision and preparation for the final test and be ready to take the curtain call and enjoy the deserved applause and recognition for all you have achieved in the middle of August when the results are published. The very best of luck to you all! This week has also seen sport taking a higher profile again with over 30 students representing under 15 boys and a girls Football team playing an away fixture at the 3rd Decembre School in Checa. This is a school of over 2000 students so as you can imagine the teams they were facing were very strong indeed with many more students to choose from for their teams. Everyone played with pride and passion and represented BSQ valiantly. Well done to all who took part and to Mr Butler, Mrs Berry, Miss Burbano, and Mr Tabango, for their support and enthusiasm in taking them along. On Friday we enjoyed the fun of World Book day with various themes on show. Well done to Juan Diego in Year 7 for winning the overall costume, Mrs Tufino, for the staff costume, and to year 12 for the best themed year group. This is an event that happens annually and we all like the opportunity and occasion to dress up. Finally, excitement is starting to build as the new swimming pool is starting to reveal itself. On Friday the wooden fence that has been a darkening shadow, and with forced movement restrictions was finally removed. I understand that opening events are planned and these will be very soon. I know that the students and staff cannot wait to be able to dip in once all of the safety tests have been completed. More news on this to follow. Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our Community Horse-riding award Orian (Y6) has competed last Sunday 16th April at La Armenia a horse-riding competition and won! While Philippe (Y2) has also competed in a different category and has finished second. We couldn't be prouder of the achievements of our students; their wins are ours as well.
