Thought for the week; “Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Norman MacEwen We have reached the final week of this first long term and what a term it has been! Looking back over the months it is quite astonishing to recall all the events, outings and activities that have taken place. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work and dedication of all the members of the BSQ community, for without everyone giving so generously of their time, passion, energy and commitment we most certainly would not have achieved so much. Thank you all. We wish you the very best seasonal greetings and hope that after this week you will find the time to enjoy the presence and company of those nearest and dearest to you. In the meantime, we hope you will enjoy the festive events, celebrations and surprises that we have install for you this week. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Monday, 12th December 2022: Christmas Show Friday, 16th December 2022: Last day of classes. School closes at 12 pm Wednesday, 4th January 2023: Start of Term 2 David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary We may be in the last week of school before the holidays but living and learning in primary is still in full swing. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Christmas Bazaar this Saturday, enjoying the food, singing and of course, the wonderful crafts made by the primary students. Rehearsals for the Christmas Performance have taken place and we look forward to welcoming you at 2pm this afternoon for the performance itself. Many thanks to Ms. Maria Fernanda Espinosa for all of her work in organising and coordinating. Last week, Year 6 enjoyed a trip to Parque Armenia. Whilst there, they created some fabulous artwork, great work everyone! Additionally, Early Years and Year 1 also have their trip to The Happy Farm tomorrow. Children are incredibly excited and for many of them, this is their first ever school trip! Have a wonderful week. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Fiesta De Quito Football The British School romped to victory in the inaugural Fiesta De Quito football tournament. Great fun was had by all, and we over at The British School are especially thankful to SKAS, Pachamama and Fundacion De Luz for participating. We look forward to hosting these schools again and battling for further trophies! Our mixed team of Year 5's and 6's showed a real zeal for football, sport and in general competition. Over 6 games, BSQ only lost one and indeed won some in emphatic fashion. Goals were free flowing from our alliteratively named front three of Luca, Lucas and Luciano- both a defenders and commentators worst nightmare! Our midfield of Niko and Nicholas showed excellent dynamism and our defence of Emilia, Mila, Victor, Dario and Pedro held firm like a rock. Did I mention our goalkeepers!? Hadid and Bruno, two BSQ diamond finds, only let in 2 goals between them over the 6 games despite facing a relentless onslaught from Fundacion De Luz and SKAS. Overall, the tournament was a great success, and we will use this to springboard further events and further opportunities for our very talented students. It was great to see the parents attending, which I believe is the first time in a very long time. Here's to many, many more! I would like to give a special thanks to admin and maintenance. The logistics ran perfectly and the pitch was spotless. Also, thanks to Oscar and Fernando for refereeing. Best wishes, Mr Butler BSQ – Secondary December week 2 It was lovely this week to finally see our students competing with other schools on the sports field. This was a great success and it was good to see so many parents supporting. This occasion was for the older Primary students who were victorious. The scenes at the end with the children and their parents were ecstatic. This is just the starting point and Secondary will be hosting some volleyball matches very soon and Mr Butler and Mrs Ruiz will be arranging an under 14 and an under 17 event in the new year. In March the next round of residential events will be taking place with year 8 and year 10 going off to their events. We will also be looking forward to the year 11 and 13 events in June. This week the final administration and contracts have been agreed with Camps International and there should be contact from them via Mr Tabango about the events and the payment plans. Please do ensure that your son or daughter supports the event as these are hugely rewarding for the children.
Well done to year 13 for the completion of their Mock exams. They have done really well personally and organisationally. I hope that the outcomes are what they deserve. On Saturday whilst the Christmas Bazaar is taking place the secondary staff will be marking, moderating and starting the process of writing the Mock report for each student. This will have detailed what went well, what could be better and a focus going forward for each subject. I imagine that in some cases this will require some parent intervention so we do look forward to this. On January 1st the deadline for applications to US and UK universities passes so this week we are focusing on the final needs of the applications. My aim is to have all of this don before the end of term so that it does not hang over the holidays. If your son or daughter is planning to study overseas, this week is particularly important. Please have a discussion about intention and what is needed as my time is limited and I would prefer not to have any last minute issues on New Year’s Eve. You will have noticed that the country is now insisting on Masks for internal spaces again due to the rise in COVID cases and Influenza A. On Monday we will be insisting on these so please ensure that your son or daughter comes to school with one. We look forward finally to the end of term on Friday. This will be a celebration in Secondary with our rewards and recognition assembly and other fun activities. Please remember that this is a 12 pm finish to the day so that we can all get away to enjoy a well-earned break. Have a great week everyone and my very best wishes for a peaceful Christmas. Mr Moors IGCSE FIELD TRIP Thursday 24th November students in year 11 travelled to Quito to collect data as part of their IGCSE Geography coursework. They had chosen the hypothesis’ they wanted to test and worked in groups to collect data. The students wrote about their experiences below and photos are also below. This Thursday 24th, the Year 11 Geography class went on a trip to the Quito as part of their investigation and recollection of data. We walked around 4km from the outer urban area into the CBD (Central Business District), noticing patterns and carrying out different methods to gather information which is useful for our work. It was an interesting yet busy day for us which ended with a nice lunch at Quicentro followed by our return to school. Daniela. During Thursday of November, we went on a geography trip to Quito and investigated if it fits a model of urban land use. We travelled along residential areas to finally get to the central business district. During our travel, we collected certain data like traffic and pedestrian count, building height and environmental quality survey, due to this we could identify ify whether Quito seemed to have urban land usage like the burgess model shows. Finally we ended up having lunch at Quicentro shopping to return back to school and end our investigation. Alejandro The group were exceptionally well-behaved and represented the school in the highest regard. They demonstrated their capabilities phenomenally and I can’t emphasise how proud they should be of themselves. They showed how dedicated they are of their studies and their commitment to their peers by working in groups, they wanted to push themselves to achieve as high as possible. I would like to thank them for making the trip so pleasurable. OUR COMMUNITY GOOD JOB VICTOR HUGO We are very pleased to share that Víctor Hugo participated on the tennis tournament organized by Rancho San Francisco. He got the Vice Championship in his category. Congratulations! Además, Early Years y Year 1 también tienen su viaje a The Happy Farm mañana. ¿Mencioné a nuestros porteros?
NUESTRA COMUNIDADBUEN TRABAJO VICTOR HUGO

Thought for the week; ‘Celebrate life in all its glory - challenge yourself to let the routine sing, and the new dance’. (Maximillian Degenerez) We sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed the Quito celebrations and that you are looking forward to our forthcoming Christmas events. Thank you for supporting the heavy machinery work on the 6th, our pool development was able to advance considerably and we are well on our way towards opening in the new year. Our staff were busy working on innovative curricular developments throughout the day. Just one main announcement for this week, please remember that our Christmas fair will take place this coming Saturday. Doors will open at 10.00am and we will have our traditional bazaar, Christmas games, festive songs, food and performances, as well as a book exchange to renew your home library. Also – join us at the fair for the grand opening of our new look Early Years area. Community Health: At this time of year, we have a lot of different seasonal health complications and we would like to kindly remind you of the protocols regarding students who have symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. The advice is simple; students showing symptoms should please stay home and rest. Once recovered they can be back on campus but they must wear masks until completely recovered. Please refer back to the email sent out in August to refresh your knowledge of protocols and best practices. In order to maintain our community as healthy as possible we depend on high standards of trust, responsibility, and communication from all members of our community. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Christmas Fair: Saturday 10th December: 10.00 am – 1.30 pm End of Term: Friday, 16th of December David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Now we are in December, spirits are high in the primary school for both the Fiestas de Quito celebrations that we all enjoyed over the weekend (more details to follow around celebrations in school this week) and for Christmas which is nearing ever closer. Ms. Maria Fernanda has been working hard in all classes in collaboration with the class teachers, busily preparing for the Christmas performance which takes place on Monday December 12th at 2pm, with all primary parents invited. Of course, before the performance, we also have the Christmas Bazaar on Saturday December 10th from 10 – 2. Here, you will get to watch the school choir perform and also have a sneak peak of the songs to be performed at the Christmas performance. Work has been underway for the last 2 weeks to rejuvenate the Early Years environment. The ´mini city´ has been transformed and classrooms are also being given attention in order to enable the best possible learning opportunities for our youngest learners. We look forward to the grand opening on the day of the Christmas Bazaar. Finally, a notice about uniform. Please ensure that students are wearing appropriate BSQ uniform including plain black shoes on regular uniform days and trainers on PE days. Have a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 3B Science This term 3B has been rocking science. These budding Geologists and Paleontologists have been discovering the secrets that rocks hold about our planet. They have classified rocks into natural and man-made, learned the 3 different rock types and how they are formed and performed an experiment to determine different properties. We also had a rock show, where we looked at everyone’s favorite rocks from home and tried to identify them. This week we turned our attention to fossils. We watched a video about how fossils are formed and labeled diagrams to explain how a dinosaur becomes a fossil. Next week we will have a go at making our own mold and cast to cement these ideas. Ms. Chamberlain – Year 3 BSQ – Secondary Secondary Newsletter December week 1 Well done year 13! We are at the business end of the first half of the year and year 13 are now at the end of their first week of mock exams. We are all very proud of them as they seem to be entering into the stresses of the time with a cheerfulness that we can all admire. They are organised and on time and they see to be taking the preparation seriously to maximise their outcomes. I have spent time this week meeting them all individually to discuss and find out what is needed for their university destinations. 8 of our students have been accepted onto courses at USFQ already by passing entrance tests and other needs. All must be congratulated as they have been awarded scholarships for their fees. The subjects include, Medicine, Law, Mechanical Engineering, and Publicity and Marketing. We also have a number of the top US and UK universities being targeted such as Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, MIT, Oxford and Manchester, and many other destinations in Latin America and Europe. There really are some exciting plans to look forward to. Once again our wonderful students in CAS and the student leadership team are entering into the Christmas period with gusto as they maximise the potential for fundraising and community projects. As usual we will be all involved in the drive to collect Christmas boxes for donation. We are all happily supporting Fundación Ammen, (46 children involved with therapy and special needs education, Fundación Caminitos de luz (160 – children and their education), and Niños de Maria (180 children from vulnerable conditions). Please do support this and ensure that we have the box back by Wednesday 14th December. Our Year 12 CAS students are planning a series of events around the theme of Fiestas de Quito over the coming week There will be a lunch time Ecuavoley tournament throughout the week, a Quarenta Tournament, a Balcones de Quito design competition on Wednesday 7th and a Bake sale on Friday the 9th with a red and blue theme to accent the school uniform to finish the fun. Good luck to everyone involved. Next week we will all enjoy the long weekend and this is being extended even further on Tuesday as we see the major part of the new pool construction completed. Everyone will be working at home on that day due to the noise and heavy machinery on site. This is with the exception of Years 11 and 13 who we have prioritised for teaching. They will be safely based in the IB centre for the day so that they do not miss any lessons. The staff will be completing some development activity for the school connected to the recent Council of International Schools accreditation process. You will also be aware of the parent information sessions we are running next week to give you more understanding on how we deal with strengthening interpersonal skills and communication between students, parents, and the key pastoral staff at the school. These matters can be extremely complicated to resolve with teenagers. We must always work as a team and give our love and support when things go wrong. Even for us as professionals this can be challenging, so being informed about processes and needs will be incredibly useful to us all in our community. The sessions are in school at 08.30 am on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week. You are all very welcome and we look forward to your support. These sessions are not necessarily about individual cases but a chance for you all to gain a greater understanding of how we deal with these very sensitive areas. Finally, this week has seen an unprecedented increase in sickness absence and it seems that this is mostly down to the prevalence of Influenza A which seems to be sweeping the region. Please consider the hygiene lessons we all learnt in the COVID pandemic. Often the most basic things are the most effective. Also please consider getting a Flu vaccine. Worldwide there is a significant increase of cases and we all need to take all possible precautions. Have a great week everyone Lee Moors Head of Secondary OUR COMMUNITYExcellent News for BSQ Dear BSQ community, it is always enriching to share the achievements of our students. As one of our school counselors I want to share with you the news that we received from USFQ, regarding university applicants. The university informed us that all 8 students who took their admissions exam passed the application process obtaining very good results. This is excellent news, and we are proud that the effort and ability of our students is achieving external recognition and enabling them to pursue their dreams. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to our teaching staff who provide our students with the tools that they need to succeed in life.
