Thought for the week; “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” Henry Ford Today, we recognised the importance of national traditions celebrating the successes of our Yr. 13 students with the highest-grade averages through the highly emotive flag ceremony. It was a spectacular occasion for all our students and we are sure that it will remain firmly imprinted on their memories. Principal BSQ – PrimaryAnother busy week has come and gone in the primary school this week. Last week saw the elections of our student council taking place, well done to those newly elected! The new council have already met and their work will continue this week as a number of our elected school councillors will be speaking to the visiting CIS team. The visiting CIS accreditors will also have the opportunity to observe lessons across the primary school and witness the fantastic learning taking place. We look forward to welcoming our guests and showing them why BSQ is a great place to learn! We are approaching the end of the first reporting period and as such, teachers are gathering data to determine the progress and attainment of students so far this year. As parents, you can expect the first report in October for Year 1 to Year 6 students. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary This week has seen visitors to the school arriving to give information to our older students about university destinations. On Wednesday we enjoyed a visit from USFQ so that key dates, activities, and deadlines could be shared with those students planning on studying in Ecuador next year. On Thursday it was the turn of a delegation of 12 different universities from around the world to share the opportunities on offer. These important types of events have been missed from our calendar for a couple of years due to COVID. It really is refreshing to see them back and the students benefiting from the information. The events were not just restricted to year 13 but also years 11 and 12 so that they can also start thinking about next steps. Everyone involved appreciated the guidance and opportunity to have discussions with people outside if the school. On Friday last week we experienced a focus day to set the tone for the day off on Monday for Queen Elizabeth II funeral. This was a wonderful event that was based in subject areas and students experiencing activity on a carousel so that they experience the full range of education. In English there was an analysis of a poem written by the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage called Floral Tribute. It is written through the metaphor of the lily of the valley - one of the late Queen's favourite flowers, which appeared in her coronation bouquet. The first letter of each line spells out "Elizabeth" when taken together. You can find the Poem HERE. Following the activity students were encouraged to write their own poem after considering Floral tribute. I am very pleased to be able to share with you the wonderful and moving work of Felipe Rodriguez in year 13 who penned his poem for his Grandmother Isabel. Intertwined with love and affection, Sailing on to a greater tomorrow, one without the chains of humanity, A land capable of sacred heights, those of which she deserves. Bells ring for her departure, with the nostalgia of all the memories we shared. Even as she leaves, like a free bird through an open window into the horizon, Love persists, every time I look at her pictures, think of her laugh, remember the touch of her hands. I know now the meaning of sadness, So as to not cry about the lack of her presence, And not sink in the remembrance of her leaving, Because it will overtake me, Every loving moment spent with her is recollected, reteaching me to never stop loving, Lasting a lifetime, and another, and another, and a million more. His inspiration led him to write the above original poem conceding that this is just the first part. He goes on to say that “I guess my newfound innate talent for poetry, as my mother has said to me many times (therefore it must be true), I have written an additional stanza.” It is wonderful work Felipe and thanks on behalf of us all for sharing these intimate thoughts. Finally, I am very excited to finally see all the planning and discussions coming to fruition for the residential events. Our first event departs next week with year 9 going off to the Northern Highlands and year 7 who head off to the jungle on the 3rd October. Please do support these events as they are hugely important educational opportunities for the children to get away and live with each other. Often the best and deepest learning takes place outside of the classroom. If children are not included there will inevitably be regrets once everyone comes back with the stories and the excitement of the activities they experienced (away from parents). Please encourage them to be brave and take part. On Friday I met with Camps International about trips planned in March and June to the Galapagos and other wonderful venues around the country for the other year groups. Please look out for information on these exciting opportunities and make sure your son or daughter is involved. Hi, we are Gonzalo and Juan Jose, year 11A’s student council representatives and this is what's going on in the BSQ campus. As you may know, this year many new teachers have arrived and become part of the BSQ community. Last year many of my classmates were worried that incoming teachers could not fulfil their high expectations, however, already a month into school, we could not be more satisfied with the quality of their education. Every single detail in their class seems important to them, from the connection to students to the comprehension of the subject they are teaching. Without a doubt each one of our new teachers provides an excellent level of education whilst still creating relationships with the students which creates a friendly yet educational environment for us inside and outside the classroom. Furthermore, as for myself (Gonzalo), I am particularly enjoying school this year. The welcomeness of the whole school and how every year group, from Year 7 to Year 13 knows one another is truly magnificent and something I had never seen before in any of the four countries I've lived in before. Anywhere you go within BSQ’s campus, you will always find a friend or someone who is kind and willing to help you. We can see examples of camaraderie within school when during breaks and lunch, people from different year groups come together and play sports as teams instead of remaining enclosed within their year group. This way, students share with each other and sometimes even with teachers who join in games for fun. As I've mentioned, I find this shocking. In schools I’ve visited or been part of before, year groups always had this sense of self-pride and tried to not interact with people that were younger or older than themselves, sometimes even looking down on them, but here in BSQ, it's such a welcome relief that I was able to find such a friendly, warm and loving environment that's truly a role model for schools all around the globe, not only here in Ecuador.
Saludos Cordiales, Sr. Butler y Srta. Espinosa Lee Moors Director de Secundaria

Thought for the week; “Beauty exists not in what is seen and remembered, but in what is felt and never forgotten.” Johnathan Jena It was wonderful to see so many members of our community together this past Saturday enjoying the opportunity to get to know one another just that little bit better. This was just the first of many community events that we hope you will join us for. Remembering: Last week saw students across the school celebrating and remembering the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. And of course, on Monday we took the time to reflect and show our respects on the day of the Queen’s State Funeral. From left to right: Andres Robalino, Executive Director of the BSQ foundation signing the official book of commemoration at the British Embassy. Flags at half-mast at BSQ. This week the school will be hosting its first University Fair with the organisation U for You. On Thursday the 22nd we will have representatives from some of the top British universities here at school. This will be a great chance for our students to start planning ahead and thinking about career courses in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. We will also be busy preparing for our Flag Ceremony event on Monday the 26th of September. This year for the first time we will be accompanied by a full, traditional marching band. Staff will also be working hard to prepare the school to receive international guests. On Monday the 26th we will be joined by Jonathan Dey, Orbital’s Regional Schools Officer, who will be flying in from Manchester to visit us until Thursday. And, on Tuesday the 27th we will be joined by Chris Durbin and Scott Huyler from the Council of International Schools (CIS). Chris and Scott are independent school assessors who will be providing an external opinion on the quality of education provided by the British School. We hope you will join us in making them feel very welcome. Principal BSQ – Primary It was wonderful to see so many of you at the picnic on Saturday. Once again, I am incredibly impressed by the wonderful unitedness of the BSQ community and it was a fantastic opportunity to chat with so many of you. The canteen provision has now returned to self-service and the feedback from both students are parents has been very positive. Additionally, the new menu has been approved by a nutritionist so not only is the food delicious, you can be assured that it is healthy too. The new primary school council will be formed and will meet for the first time this week. We are excited to hear their views and for them to get started with some exciting projects across the primary school, including planning for a World Food Day celebration in October. Speaking of celebrations, primary students from Years 2 – 6 will also be attending the Juramento a la Bandera celebration at school next Monday. Finally, thank you all again for your kind messages and condolences upon the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Across the school on Friday, students participated in activities that enabled them to pay their respects and understand the life of the Queen, which was very touching. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary It has been a hugely constructive week to this point, and it is incredible to think that we are almost 6 weeks in already. At this stage staff and students are settled in their learning relationships and the teachers are now looking at assessment for the first data point. Each student at BSQ sits a Cognitive ability test (CAT4) at the start of each phase. This is a formal assessment of their academic ability across 4 different areas. What this gives us is an idea at what level they should be working to so that we can ensure that everyone is making at least expected progress. As always at BSQ we set the bar higher with each student set to a challenge target as we need to take them slightly beyond academic potential. Year 7, 10, and year 12 are sitting these tests over this week. The outcomes of this will be on your first report that is due at the end of October. There will also be a reminder for you all about our processes that will be released nearer the time. You will see where your son or daughter sits regarding their attainment in each subject against their target. Staff are also considering the effort that students are putting into their learning. This will be assessed as 5 being the highest to 1 being the lowest. We consider their application, homework and organisation and contribution in lessons. Again, this will be in each subject so we get a clear picture of where support may be needed. It also gives us an average grade to tell you how students are approaching learning generally at school this year. It is perhaps therefore a good time for students to really impress to get the highest marks possible. Last year we were looking at changing the way we deliver parent teacher conferences but now we are ‘back to normal’ we will revert to previous practices of PTC days on site to allow parents to come and see al. teachers. The first is approaching for year 7 as we consider their start and how they have settled. I know that these can be disruptive to learning but they are important to allow parents access to work and personal conversations with those responsible for learning. I will circulate the new plans in due course. It has been a very sad week for the staff and students with the impact of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On Monday we had some time as a staff to focus on the state funeral and be involved with the significant moment in history unfolding at home in the UK. It was important on Friday to reflect on this whole event and the passing of Her Majesty with some contextual activity for the children. It really is a significant moment in history not just for the UK but for the world. I would like to thank the students who spoke to me personally and to you all in our community for the understanding so that we could spend a moment of reflection as we witness the funeral and connected activity on Monday. Finally, we look forward to our first two residential events of the year. There has been a huge amount of work in the background to ensure that everything is right for the events and that you have the correct information as parents before departure. Year 9 are first up with their trip to the Northern Highlands from the 27th – 30th September and then Year 7 who are going to the Jungle from the 3rd to the 6th October. Parents, please engage with the paperwork sent to you and ensure that you have made payments to CEIBO in line with their timescales. It would be hugely disappointing if your son or daughter missed out on what is going to be a wonderful experience. Year 7 parents will be invited to a presentation by the company facilitating their event in the next week or so. Mr. Tabango is arranging this and we will inform you on the details very soon. Year 12 students are facing new challenges as they start the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. In these first weeks, students have been experiencing what it means to be a student with an open mind, because in each subject of the Programme, teachers must develop abilities and skills that will allow them to be students capable of facing different situations and able to seek solutions. In the tutoring periods and in LLS we have dealt with topics of great interest according to their age and interests, topics such as self-esteem, helping classmates and empathy among them, it is important to highlight the good attitude of the students, since it allows ideas are presented with a high degree of respect. In addition, it is important to highlight that, in the first five minutes of the tutor, one or another idea or concern that the students may have is discussed or exchanged. Welcome to the Diploma Programme and enjoy this new adventure!!! Tutora Año 12 Patricia Tufiño Lee Moors Jefe de Secundaria We are grateful to all members of the BSQ community for their kind words of support at this time of national mourning for the British community. It has been truly touching to receive condolences from students and parents on the loss of such an important international figurehead as Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, someone who was so dear to many of our nation’s hearts. This extension of respect and empathy is a true testament to the values of our community. As the British School with the closest ties to the British Embassy and the British community here in Ecuador, we will be closing on Monday the 19th of September for the State Funeral of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. This decision has not been taken lightly as we are aware of the possible complications that this may cause for some families within our community. Please read on and make sure to check out what our primary and secondary teams have planned. Have a great week! David Jones Principal BSQ – PrimaryFirstly, let me thank you all again for your attendance at out ´Meet the Teacher´ days last week. We were incredibly impressed by the attendance on the days. It was wonderful to see parents connecting or re-connecting with the school campus and being able to see the learning, laughter and joy that we have the privilege to see every day. We look forward to welcoming you to the school campus many more times throughout the school year including at our upcoming community picnic on Saturday September 17th. Last week also saw the first house event of the school year. Years 3 to 6 spent some time creating art work based on the mountains that their houses are named after, whilst Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2 wowed us all with their wonderful dancing. The house spirit is definitely back up and running at BSQ! We now look forward to a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary This week sees student vice coming to the forefront of our attention with the announcement of the hustings and voting process in year groups. It was fantastic to see so many students engaged with this and who have so enthusiastically made cases for appointment to the prestigious roles. I had great pleasure last week of also introducing our new Student Leadership Team. These are outstanding students in year 13 who have been specially selected to represent the whole student body. These appointments hold significant standing in the school and their work and presence will exemplify all that BSQ hold crucial for our student development model. They are team players, excellent communicators, they have outstanding leadership qualities, and they provide us with role models for our younger children. I am very pleased to announce again the following appointments: Student Head of School – Anabella De Armas Student Deputy Head of School – Samantha Baugh Student Assistant Heads of School – Gael Andre Oña Larco Agostina Tagarot Antonella Sánchez Obando On Friday they were formally involved with the Year 7 Tie ceremony being front of house welcoming parents and year 7 into the school at their first event. Anabella and Samantha represented the student body by speaking to year 7 and their parents, welcoming, giving advice, and outlining the exciting times ahead. Well done also to the year 7 themselves. Finally, now formally welcomed into the Secondary school. It is also appropriate to give my sincere thanks to the parents for their support at the event. There were lots of proud parents and students at the event. My final thoughts this week are with my colleagues and the very sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Once again our students have made me incredibly proud by displaying great thought and consideration for the staff. I had a few students come to my office to enquire if I was ok with the sad news. This was not isolated with news that the same thoughts were extended to other staff. Our students showed great sensitivity and empathy and again this exemplifies the outstanding qualities our students possess. On behalf of the staff, thank you all for your concern. I am sure that there will be further announcements on how we as a school remember her service and leadership and also welcome the reign of King Charles III. Year 12 Biology over the last couple of weeks Jhonna and Federico. Year 12 have made an excellent start to their IB Biology studies. We have been learning all about cells, their origin and structures. To help with learning about the function of all of the organelles of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the classes did an 'organelle speed dating' activity where they had to go around the room and describe themselves to each other, including their structure and function. It was a great success, with a real buzz in the classroom and some excellent descriptive writing. Year 11 Cow Eye Dissection. Year 11 Biologists have started the year learning about coordination and response in mammals. This week they had the opportunity to learn all about the structure and function of the eye. This culminated with the activity of dissecting the cows eye. They were able to identify each structure and extract the lens of the eye to demonstrate it's magnification properties. Bien echo a Año 7. Nadine Parker
Lee Moors Director de Secundaria Thought for the week ‘The more you say the less people remember’ Francois Fenelon It has been a pleasure for us getting to know members of the community over the past couple of weeks and we hope to build even closer relationships over the coming months through different events and meetings. We are grateful to those of you who have sent in observations and suggestions and whenever possible we will try to take these on board when reviewing different areas of service provision. We are very pleased to announce that as of Monday face masks will no longer be obligatory. If students feel more secure wearing a facemask they may of course continue to do so. Thank you for supporting this campaign and for helping us to keep our community healthy. Finally, in the hope of improving readership, we will make an effort to keep our communications brief and to the point. It is important to us that you read the newsletter and keep up to date with events here at the school. So, without further ado I invite you to review the key points of our respective section heads. Have a great week everyone! David Jones Principal Dates for Your DiaryAs always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars.
