Thought for the week; “Beauty exists not in what is seen and remembered, but in what is felt and never forgotten.” Johnathan Jena It was wonderful to see so many members of our community together this past Saturday enjoying the opportunity to get to know one another just that little bit better. This was just the first of many community events that we hope you will join us for. Remembering: Last week saw students across the school celebrating and remembering the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. And of course, on Monday we took the time to reflect and show our respects on the day of the Queen’s State Funeral. This week the school will be hosting its first University Fair with the organisation U for You. On Thursday the 22nd we will have representatives from some of the top British universities here at school. This will be a great chance for our students to start planning ahead and thinking about career courses in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. We will also be busy preparing for our Flag Ceremony event on Monday the 26th of September. This year for the first time we will be accompanied by a full, traditional marching band. Staff will also be working hard to prepare the school to receive international guests. On Monday the 26th we will be joined by Jonathan Dey, Orbital’s Regional Schools Officer, who will be flying in from Manchester to visit us until Thursday. And, on Tuesday the 27th we will be joined by Chris Durbin and Scott Huyler from the Council of International Schools (CIS). Chris and Scott are independent school assessors who will be providing an external opinion on the quality of education provided by the British School. We hope you will join us in making them feel very welcome. Principal BSQ – Primary It was wonderful to see so many of you at the picnic on Saturday. Once again, I am incredibly impressed by the wonderful unitedness of the BSQ community and it was a fantastic opportunity to chat with so many of you. The canteen provision has now returned to self-service and the feedback from both students are parents has been very positive. Additionally, the new menu has been approved by a nutritionist so not only is the food delicious, you can be assured that it is healthy too. The new primary school council will be formed and will meet for the first time this week. We are excited to hear their views and for them to get started with some exciting projects across the primary school, including planning for a World Food Day celebration in October. Speaking of celebrations, primary students from Years 2 – 6 will also be attending the Juramento a la Bandera celebration at school next Monday. Finally, thank you all again for your kind messages and condolences upon the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Across the school on Friday, students participated in activities that enabled them to pay their respects and understand the life of the Queen, which was very touching. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary It has been a hugely constructive week to this point, and it is incredible to think that we are almost 6 weeks in already. At this stage staff and students are settled in their learning relationships and the teachers are now looking at assessment for the first data point. Each student at BSQ sits a Cognitive ability test (CAT4) at the start of each phase. This is a formal assessment of their academic ability across 4 different areas. What this gives us is an idea at what level they should be working to so that we can ensure that everyone is making at least expected progress. As always at BSQ we set the bar higher with each student set to a challenge target as we need to take them slightly beyond academic potential. Year 7, 10, and year 12 are sitting these tests over this week. The outcomes of this will be on your first report that is due at the end of October. There will also be a reminder for you all about our processes that will be released nearer the time. You will see where your son or daughter sits regarding their attainment in each subject against their target. Staff are also considering the effort that students are putting into their learning. This will be assessed as 5 being the highest to 1 being the lowest. We consider their application, homework and organisation and contribution in lessons. Again, this will be in each subject so we get a clear picture of where support may be needed. It also gives us an average grade to tell you how students are approaching learning generally at school this year. It is perhaps therefore a good time for students to really impress to get the highest marks possible. Last year we were looking at changing the way we deliver parent teacher conferences but now we are ‘back to normal’ we will revert to previous practices of PTC days on site to allow parents to come and see al. teachers. The first is approaching for year 7 as we consider their start and how they have settled. I know that these can be disruptive to learning but they are important to allow parents access to work and personal conversations with those responsible for learning. I will circulate the new plans in due course. It has been a very sad week for the staff and students with the impact of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On Monday we had some time as a staff to focus on the state funeral and be involved with the significant moment in history unfolding at home in the UK. It was important on Friday to reflect on this whole event and the passing of Her Majesty with some contextual activity for the children. It really is a significant moment in history not just for the UK but for the world. I would like to thank the students who spoke to me personally and to you all in our community for the understanding so that we could spend a moment of reflection as we witness the funeral and connected activity on Monday. Finally, we look forward to our first two residential events of the year. There has been a huge amount of work in the background to ensure that everything is right for the events and that you have the correct information as parents before departure. Year 9 are first up with their trip to the Northern Highlands from the 27th – 30th September and then Year 7 who are going to the Jungle from the 3rd to the 6th October. Parents, please engage with the paperwork sent to you and ensure that you have made payments to CEIBO in line with their timescales. It would be hugely disappointing if your son or daughter missed out on what is going to be a wonderful experience. Year 7 parents will be invited to a presentation by the company facilitating their event in the next week or so. Mr. Tabango is arranging this and we will inform you on the details very soon. Year 12 students are facing new challenges as they start the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. In these first weeks, students have been experiencing what it means to be a student with an open mind, because in each subject of the Programme, teachers must develop abilities and skills that will allow them to be students capable of facing different situations and able to seek solutions. In the tutoring periods and in LLS we have dealt with topics of great interest according to their age and interests, topics such as self-esteem, helping classmates and empathy among them, it is important to highlight the good attitude of the students, since it allows ideas are presented with a high degree of respect. In addition, it is important to highlight that, in the first five minutes of the tutor, one or another idea or concern that the students may have is discussed or exchanged. Welcome to the Diploma Programme and enjoy this new adventure!!!
