Thought for the week; “We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.” Peter Drucker Welcome back everyone! We sincerely hope that you had a wonderful break. We have a busy term ahead of us packed with exciting learning opportunities for our students so please make sure to check the primary and secondary sectional updates for news and events. This week is the last week to submit a favorite family recipe for our collaborative book publication with the WFP (WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME). If you would like your recipe to be consider please send it to the following email [email protected] by Monday 6th March. Just a quick reminder that the Orbital annual survey is still live and we encourage you to take the time to please give us your feedback. BSQ has always had the highest response rate amongst all Orbital Schools and we hope that will continue to be the case. Many thanks and have a great term! David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Nothing of significant note for this week but please take the time to complete the Orbital community survey. Your opinions are important to help us constantly improve the quality of service and education provided by our team. David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, We hope that you had a wonderful Carnival break whether you travelled or stayed nearby for the celebrations. My first experience of Carnival was certainly a fantastic experience. The new half term has begun in earnest and students seem revitalized and refreshed after the break, ready for the learning ahead. This half term promises to be an exciting one with many trips already planned including a Y1 trip to the zoo, a trip the park for Y2 and a museum visit in the works for Year 4. This week is also Theme Week, with every year group working on an area of the United Nations ´Sustainable Development Goals.´ We will be learning about many important things that affect our world during the week from food security to gender equality. We look forward to sharing our learning with you on Friday. Finally, after the success of the ´Semana de Pruebas´ before the break, it is wonderful to see the final preparations being undertaken for our extra-curricular programme. Those involved cannot wait to get started! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary The Student Council for 2022-2023 have been very busy so far this year! We started of the Year by sub-dividing our Council into areas that we wanted to concentrate on. They are Learning and Curriculum, Environment Focus and Friendship Focus. One of the first projects the Student Council wanted to undertake was the purchase and installation of a Friendship Bench. So that those students, who may feel the need to talk to someone or to find someone to play, with had somewhere to go. They decided to raise money during the Christmas Fayre, and raised a huge $115! We instructed the carpenter, next door to school, to hand make us a bench suitable for the children. Today, all of their hard work became a reality as the bench was delivered and proudly put into its place in school. In January, the children were introduced to the idea of creating a project with an environment focus that would be entered into a competition with COBIS Schools, from all around the world. They decided they wanted to create a Bee Garden. A plot was identified, the children raised money through a non-uniform day, where we had a wonderful array of children dressed in black and yellow. Some went the whole mile and came dressed as bees! This money was used to buy a fantastic variety of plants. The Student Council set about designing and digging. The bee garden, was very kindly, donated logs which were used for the central path, along with large stones which will be used as the garden evolves. Thank you Victor Hugo! (Year 6A) Nicola Woollard Bumblebees Bumblebee Class have been very busy bees indeed. Since the start of Reception, we have made such impressive progress in our communication skills, social interactions, physical development, maths understanding and are making impressive headway on our reading and writing journey. Ms Sole has been teaching us a lot about yoga and we have continued using breathing strategies to calm down when we need to regulate our emotions. We have been learning essential life skills in problem solving, conflict resolution and expressing our emotions in a healthy way. Through creative activities, we have been learning about the natural world around us, Ecuador, the seven continents and all the way out to our solar system! We have been using our growing phonics knowledge to begin to read and write some words and sentences related to this. We have also been developing our independence and confidence with everyday tasks such as personal hygiene, taking care of our things and beginning to use a knife and fork correctly at lunchtime. Come and say hello! Ms Lilly Lockwood, Ms Soledad Mino and The Bumblebees. BSQ - Secondary27th February 2023 We all arrived back this week after a well-deserved rest and an opportunity to spend time travelling and catching up with friends and family. The end of the Quimestre was a busy week with lots of wonderful activities for the students to enjoy. A huge thank you to Mr Butler who organised a wonderful traditional dance competition between year groups. This was outstanding and the year 13 were deserved winners under the guidance of Mrs Rueda. Not only were the students well-rehearsed and dancing to time but they looked fabulous as well with tradition dress. Hopefully the video clip of the performance will be shared for you all to enjoy.
We also enjoyed the valentines event organised on the working Saturday. It was a wonderful event organised by the student council. There was a cake competition, weddings and divorces, dancing and a wonderful picnic on the field. Well done to all involved for what was a wonderful event. Also, well done to those students who made the effort to come along. It was a fantastic community event which everyone enjoyed. On the Tuesday it was the turn of Beyond Lagartococha fund raising team with their take on valentine’s day with bakes sales, themed dress and the usual flowers, chocolates and cards. I am always impressed by the endeavour of our students when they get the opportunity to take control as they are always wonderfully organised. We have a very busy few weeks ahead starting on Wednesday this week when students will be at home in the secondary school. This is to allow time for the staff to meet with parents and students in our important exam groups of Year 11 and 13. This is the last push towards exams and we all need to work together to ensure that all possible support measures are in place to maximise success. All other students will be set tasks to do at home in line with their timetable for the day. If your son or daughter is in years 11 or 13, please make appointments with Sandy and come along with them to see all teachers to celebrated the hard work they have been doing. Your support is always much appreciated. On the 6th March we look forward to year 8 going on their residential event. The year 10 trip has been postponed until further notice. Mr Tabango will write to those impacted with the new plans in time. Year 13 arts students as part of their assessment needs need to showcase their talents in Music performances and a visual exhibition. These will be taking place in the middle of March and more detail will be released nearer the time. I do urge you all to come along and see the amazing work prepared. We certainly have some extremely talented students at BSQ. Have a great week everyone!
After all, we are the first accredited sustainable school in Ecuador! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Reception A During the past weeks, Dragonflies learned about the Solar System and the planets around the sun. They reviewed names, size, color, shapes and facts like: "Saturn has rings." "Venus is the hottest planet." "Earth is our planet." Dragonflies were very excited to share their knowledge about the planets, and to identify the initial letter of each name. They created a Solar System book, where their creativity was shown using different materials to represent each planet. Finally, they made their best effort to copy the names of each planet to complete their book. This was a great activity to practice different skills like Literacy, Maths and motor skills. We are very proud of our Dragonflies! Enjoy the pictures! Fran Our Community Mila did it again! Mila won singles and doubles. on a long tournament. Thought for the week; “Everybody has talent, it's just a matter of moving around until you've discovered what it is”. George Lucas Welcome back after the long weekend, we hope you all enjoyed a restful break. Looking back, we had a busy week with the arrival of Jonathan Dey, our Regional Head of Schools, who visited us last Thursday and Friday. Jonathan was particularly impressed by some of the new initiatives that have been taking place and was delighted to be present at the inauguration of our primary mural in front of the year 5 and 6 classrooms. Looking ahead, next week we will be offering our students the chance to try out our extra-curricular activities programme. From Monday to Thursday from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm students can get a flavor of a wide range of sporting, academic, and cultural activities. Participation for this week is completely voluntary and free of charge. Students who are interested should sign up for trial activities this week – participation will require parental authorisation for late collection (4.30 pm) - authorisation slips can be requested from Oscar Tabango. Please see the timetable of activities for our ‘semana de prueba’ which is published below in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section. Please note that only activities that have sufficient demand will be able to continue after the half-term break. We will continue to grow and refine the programme based upon student interest and demand. Once demand has been established, we will explore the possibility of bus transport services. And finally, at the end of this week’s news and updates, you will find some general information regarding volcanic safety. Have a great week everyone. It has been wonderful to see the Early Years students accessing the new ´mini city´ space and Year 2 had a wonderful time on Thursday for their Victorian theme day. Students were able to experience a small glimpse of what schooling was like 150 years ago. I think it is safe to say that they much prefer modern schooling, even though they enjoyed the experience! Additionally, the mural painted by Year 5 and 6 with the coordination of local artist Caro Vallejo, is nothing short of a masterpiece. The mural covers a large area of primary and represents the nature and beauty of Ecuador, as well as the BSQ school values. The students worked incredibly hard on this project and it was a pleasure to welcome Year 5 and 6 parents to witness the grand opening on Friday. On Saturday February 11th, secondary students are invited into school for a Valentine´s Day event. This is only for secondary students; primary students are not expected to attend school on this day. Finally, Partial 2/Quimestre 1 reports have now been shared. If you have any questions or comments about the reports, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your child´s class teacher. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Nursery Newsletter In Nursery, we are excited to share some of the changes we’ve made to our classroom layout so to provide our learners with opportunities to engage in meaningful activities that interests them, whilst also encouraging children to independently select and use resources/materials so to cultivate their capacity to concentrate and expand their own learning. Our new design and shelf activities are intuitive and conducive to our learners needs at multiple developmental stages. The designated learning spaces encourage children to find areas of personal interest. This exploration encourages their creativity, feelings of freedom, a sense of self, discovery and hands-on learning experiences – promoting learning at each child’s own unique pace. We want our classroom to help our learners develop their whole selves. Our shelves and materials organisation encourages children to develop discipline and socially conscious habits. While our space is designed for self-driven learning and age-appropriate stimulation so to support our students growing independence, as they learn to make personal choices and become more confident. Best of all our wonderful young learners helped us to create this learning space, contributing their skills to help us construct a variety of new and interesting purposeful activities e.g., our kitchen roll colour sorting activity. Ms. Gerry BSQ – Secondary 2nd February 2023 The weather gods are with us again this week and things have been much easier with less rain. It is nice to see some traditional dance coming onto the PE programme with our younger students. We are also considering how we enrich the PE curriculum further as we await the imminent arrival of the International order of equipment. Last year we made a significant investment in PE, Art, and Music, and the teachers in those areas and myself considered how we can use the opportunity to develop the experienced for students in these important areas. Mr Herrera has been slowly developing the Music area with a reorganisation of the room along with some accents to make the learning environment more stimulating. He is eagerly anticipating the arrival of new instruments and resources for this important area of our curriculum. In PE we now have table Tennis as an activity to add to the PE curriculum and in time, once the pool is complete, swimming will be in place for years 7 and 8 (to replace missing learning due to the COVID implications) The new pool is starting to take shape and the tiles are going in this week. We look forward to the opportunity to deliver swimming gala’s, swimming clubs for those students with existing talent and interests to develop further, along with specialist courses for IGCSE and generally such as personal survival and lifesaving. Whilst we are not quite there yet, the end is in site with the construction, and we are excited by the opportunities offered by this significant development which will be extremely welcome. Mr Tabango has been working closely with Mr Jones to get the Extra-curricular provision where it needs to be. We made some inroads last year with a couple of after school clubs and the residential programme initiative. I am aware of a number of strategies that are coning which includes an afterschool football club. This will inevitably lead to a fixture programme it is hoped and I am certain that our talented footballers will be excited by this prospect. On Friday morning next week (10 Feb), we will be welcoming our year 10 parents for the latest residential trip meeting. These have been a huge success. It is important that you have the opportunity to understand the programme and arrangements for the event and why we feel that this is an outstanding educational experience for all of those involved. Year 10 parents please save the date and try to attend and support Mr Tabango. Last week the new D of E recruits delivered a very successful practice expedition locally. On Wednesday this week I have the pleasure of accompanying the Silver participants as they embark on their assessed expedition to Quilatoa. This is an arduous test of navigation, hill walking, independence, and teamwork over three days. There will be some pictures and more details on their adventures to follow next week. You will by now have received the Q1/P2 full report with written comments for each subject along with a full tutor report. For each lesson there is a Partial 2 grade in our British curriculum standard and the equivalent for Ecuador. The British curriculum grade was compared to the target grade and you have been made aware of a progress position against this. Your son or daughter will be recorded as above target, on target, or below target. Each teacher will also give an effort grade which is in a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest grade. Along with the written comment you also received a Quimestre grade for period 1. This reflects performance from August to January and in Key stage 4 and 5 this was an exam, and in Key stage 3 this was achieved through a teachers assessed grade. This data all contributes to matriculation at the end of the year. Another date to remember is the 1st March when the Secondary school will be closed for the day to allow teachers time so that they can meet the year 11 and 13 parents to discuss exam performance and key focus areas as students enter into final preparations for the end of IGCSE and IB. Please save this date so that you can come along and be part of the important discussions to frame support and encouragement at this stressful time. Have a great week everyone! Mr Moors Year 9 I have really enjoyed watching Year 9 grow and develop as a tutor group over the last few months. They are maturing into a great group of young people. They are working extremely well together and forging some excellent friendship groups. Since returning from the Christmas break they have a lot of change to deal with, with three new teachers, but they have taken it in their stride and are excelling in these subjects. In particular, they have been enjoying their science lessons where they have had the opportunity to complete practicals each week, cementing their practical skills, as well as working very well together in groups. They are also particularly looking forward to making dream catchers in their English class and writing an accompanying poem. Over the last few weeks I have had nothing but praise from all of their teachers. In particular, Miss. Sawyers has been very impressed with their work in Humanities. Recently they were invited into the humanities classroom, a circle of chairs around a single table. Miss. Sawyers explained to them that they would be playing a game and they had to follow the rules of each round, that whoever received the most coins would win. 14 coins of value $5 were placed on the centre table and they had to agree on how they were distributed. They all agreed on 1 each. Then round 2, 7 coins of $5 each, all, very quickly agreed went to every other person, and the next round the ones that did not receive a coin would then receive it. Round 3, 7 coins were placed in the middle, $10 each. They were told that the students who had the most coins would have the deciding vote on what happened with the coins. However, they agreed, as they had in the previous round, and shared them, giving them to those that had not received a coin in the previous round. In the final round they were simply given another $10 coin to the students with the most $s and they could then decide what happened to the coins. They agreed to share them and some students were happy to give up their coins as equality was more important to them. The fact that they chose to be equal and fair, even though the rules weren't fair, was very impressive, and goes to show how much they have matured over the last few months. After discussion of the game they agreed that it was based on real life, resources and money are not shared equally and that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, sharing and equality doesn't happen in real life. We hope that they will reflect on this activity and realise the role they have in trying to make things more equal in the world. Keep up the great work Year 9! Ms. Nadine Parker Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our Community We want to share with you with great joy that Mauricio (Y4B) and Daniel (Y4A) are part of the Junior 2 team of the sub 8 category of the Club Independiente Del Valle de Tumbaco, in which thanks to their effort, dedication and commitment they managed to get the title of Runners-up of the tournament. Daniel plays as striker and Mauricio as midfielder and Team Captain. Since the start of the tournament, they have been the top scorers for their team, taking them to the final, where they lifted the gold trophy with their team last Saturday. Cotopaxi Update Due to the recent volcanic activity of Cotopaxi, we would like to provide you with some relevant information and reassurances from the BSQ perspective:
David Jones Principal Actividades Extracurriculares |
