BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, Last week saw a vibrant and busy week in primary with teachers busily ensuring that the remainder of the curriculum is taught before the end of the academic year alongside completing the assessments that each end of year holds. Transition for primary will take place this week with each class learning more about their new teachers and spending time in their new classes on Wednesday morning. In anticipation of this, families will receive a letter on Tuesday afternoon with the relevant information pertaining to classes and teachers for the 2024-25 academic year. Enjoy Year 6 and a huge thanks to the Year 6 team for their organisation of the trip. As we approach the end of the year, please may I ask that all library books are returned asap, ideally by the end of the week. BSQ – PrimaryDear BSQ Community, Last week saw a relatively normal and settled week in the primary school. The final cycle of enrichment began last Wednesday with students choosing a new activity for this. Please ask your child which enrichment activity they have signed up for to stimulate conversation at home. This Wednesday, June 5th, we have our Sports Day. I am pleased to announce that close family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings) are invited to the event alongside parents. Please ensure all guests bring a physical ID required for registration and admittance to campus. This approach will remain in place for the remaining school events until the end of the academic year, including the Y6 assembly (June 26th) and Awards Day (June 27th). I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Y1 SUSTAINABLE PROJECT BASED LEARNING Our Year 1 students dived last term into an exciting project focused on sustainable transport. Throughout this engaging journey, they have not only explored environmental themes but also honed essential skills through collaborative work and role-taking in groups. One of the highlights of this project has been the emphasis on sharing and combining ideas to create innovative vehicle designs. From a solar, 10 people bicycle, a solar-biomass fueled powered rescue cruise ship, innovative and amazingly comfortable solar planes, to a solar-biomass powered water taxi, students worked together, pooling their creativity and knowledge to come up with unique solutions to create new air, land, and water transportation that promotes sustainability and forward-thinking. They thought not only about helping the environment but also solving people’s transportation needs in a practical way. Using recyclable materials for their model vehicles, students explored the world of design, combining creativity and eco-conscious practices. The process was not only educational but also enjoyable, with students expressing how much fun they had while learning a great deal. Presentations have played a significant role in this project, stimulating the development of oral skills, expanding vocabulary, and enhancing social interactions. Through sharing their ideas and designs with their peers, students have not only showcased their learning but also strengthened their communication abilities and teamwork. Overall, the Sustainable Transport Project-Based Learning in Year 1 has been a rewarding and enriching experience, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability, boosting creativity, and nurturing important life skills. BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ Community, Last week we successfully organized the much-anticipated Play for Dream School Football Tournament. This initiative aimed to collect donations for a disadvantaged school in Quito, enabling them to establish a comprehensive sports program. The program, inspired by the Generation Amazing initiative that our y13 students participated in during the World Cup in Qatar last year, focuses on leveraging the power of sports to drive social change and development. The tournament was a resounding success, with schools from across the city joining in the spirit of friendly competition. The funds raised will go directly towards providing sports equipment, coaching, and facilities for the beneficiary school Enrique Ponce Gangotena, ensuring that more young people can experience the joy and benefits of sports. We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate our IB and IGCSE students who have recently completed their exams. The dedication and resilience shown throughout this challenging period have been commendable. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and eagerly await the results, confident that their hard work will be rewarded. Finally, in preparation for the next academic year, we recently held IB for our y11 and IGCSE taster sessions for our y9 students. These sessions gave our students valuable insights into the subjects they can choose for their upcoming studies. We hope these tasters have helped our students make informed decisions about their academic pathways, aligning their choices with their interests and career aspirations. Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary You’re invited to the Key Stage 3 Art Drama and Music Exhibition! 🎨🎶 Join us for a event of creativity and melodies as our students showcase their talents. BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, I hope you enjoyed a restful, long weekend. I would like to say a huge congratulations to Year 1 who last week represented BSQ and the United Kingdom in a day of multi-cultural diversity at Colegio Einstein. They participated in games and events, showing our school values throughout the day. Well done! Last Wednesday was our careers afternoon. Students across the school were given the chance to meet and ask questions of people from various careers. This enabled students to understand the many pathways that they can choose for their futures and stimulated conversation around future aspirations. Many thanks to the volunteers who came to the school to speak with the students and to Mrs. Woollard for her organisation of the event. Please allow me to make a plea regarding the drive-through. To maintain student safety, we ask that parents refrain from stopping on the zebra crossing. Additionally, we ask that cars move down to the end of the drive-through wherever possible to enable a smooth flow of traffic. Thank you. Next week looks like a relatively normal week in primary. However, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that the following week, we will be hosting the primary sports day on Wednesday June 5th. Please be reminded of the schedule below. Nursery – 8.30 – 9 Reception – 9. – 9.30 Year 1 & Year 2 – 9.30 – 10.10 Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 – 1.45 – 3 I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 1A Last week, Year 1 had a very busy week. We were delighted to be invited to attend the Sub 6 World Cup sporting event at Colegio Einstein to celebrate the International Day of Cultural Diversity. This event gave us the opportunity to interact with other similar aged children from different schools around Quito. We participated in a range of activities including jumping over hurdles, scoring goals and going front rolls. Look at us representing the United Kingdom- We also celebrated Career’s Day last week. We came to school dressed up as the career that we wanted to be in the future. We discussed the different jobs that we knew and how these can become careers for different people. At the end of the day, we were visited by different professionals who came to talk to us about their jobs and what they duties were. Look at the fun we had BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ Community Last Thursday was a tremendous success with the Year 11 IB Informative Session and the Year 9 IGCSE Session. Students and parents participated actively, discussing our diverse subject offerings. These sessions are crucial in helping students make informed decisions about their educational paths. Year 11 and Year 9 students will have their taster sessions, allowing them to explore different subjects before making their final choices. These sessions are instrumental in helping students select the subjects that best align with their interests and future goals. We are thrilled to announce that our official IB exams have concluded. Our Year 13 students are now embarking on the Futures Program, designed to prepare them for university life. This program equips them with essential skills and knowledge for their next educational chapter. I am also excited to invite you to the KSE Art Exhibition on June 3rd. Our talented students from Years 7, 8, and 9 will showcase their skills in art, drama, and music. It promises to be a wonderful event celebrating our students' creativity and hard work. Please save this date in your calendars. This week, we also have our own tournament PLAY FOR A DREAM taking place. We encourage everyone to come and support our students as they compete and demonstrate their sportsmanship and teamwork. Day 1: Tuesday, May 28th - Match 1: BSQ vs. Marie Clarac at 12:45 – 13:50 Day 2: Wednesday, May 29th - Match 2: Antares vs. Marie Clarac at 12:45 – 13:50 Day 3: Thursday, May 30th - Match 3: BSQ vs. Antares at 13:55 – 15:00 Day 4: Friday, May 31st - Final: Winner 1 vs. Winner 2 at 13:30 – 15:00 On the other hand, Ms Cecilia, CAS and Community Projects students have a message for you Dear parents/carers and students of BSQ, As part of the programme of CAS -Ceativity, Activity and Service- as well as Community Projects, we develop every year an activity with the youth centre Sinsoluka, located in the Centro Histórico de Quito. This centre takes around a 100 children -ages 3 to 18- in a vulnerable situation to support them with their studies, physical and emotional needs and providing food and school material. Every year, our Year 12 students organise and celebrate with them el Día del Niño. This is a very special celebration for all of them. Year 12 is always in charge to prepare them a party and gives them school material for the start of next academic year. To make of this a memorable day, we need your support. Along next week -27th to 31st May- we will be collecting some hygienic products such as deodorants, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sachets of shampoo, etc; we will also be collecting school material that our students don't use any longer and clothes which are in good conditions but our children do not wear anymore. This year, apart from collaborating with Sinsoluka, we have started a project to build a library in the school Enrique Ponce Gangotena. A school in a very humble area in Itulcachi. In order to make this project successful, we are also collecting used books that might be getting rusty in our houses to give them a new life. The theme of the campaign is "Un niño, un libro" and even when it is mainly directed to Primary students, it is also open to all students and families at BSQ. I know that there is no more satisfaction than helping others, however, as an encouragement, the PA has kindly offer to organise a pizza party to those classes in Primary and Secondary that donate the most. So, please, if you are so kind, support our iniciative and send your son/daughter to school next week with some of the following products: -Used but in good condition clothes (including socks, T-shirts, etc.) -Used books (mainly for Primary) -Hygienical products (deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, hygienical towels, sachets of shampoo, etc). Thank you very much from all the students who are part of CAS, Community Projects and myself. Without your continuous support our projects wouldn't be so successfull. Yours sincerely, Ms Sanchez We look forward to seeing you at these events and celebrating our students' achievements together. Best regards, Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Trip to Cuenca From May 13th to 16th, Year 10 and 12 embarked on an unforgettable journey to Cuenca. These four days were not just a break from routine but a gateway to forging new friendships and honing essential life skills like teamwork. The bustling streets of Cuenca became their playground as they immersed themselves in the city's vibrant culture. Museums unveiled the secrets of its storied past, while leisurely strolls revealed architectural marvels that seemed straight out of a fairytale. But the real magic happened at the Ingapirca Inca ruins, where the whispers of ancient civilizations echoed through time, enlightening minds and igniting imaginations. In the quaint town of Chordeleg, the artistry of jewelry making unfolded before their eyes, igniting sparks of creativity and admiration. They then had the opportunity to treat themselves or loved ones to a few gifts, On the last day, Year 12 embraced the challenge of collecting data in the meandering currents of a local river, a task integral to their IB Geography coursework. What ensued was a symphony of collaboration, as students, regardless of their academic background, rallied together, collecting data for the Science collaborative project. Ingeniously fashioning quadrats from 'lolly-pop' sticks and string, they delved into the depths of scientific inquiry with gusto. JP's zeal even led him to amass a hefty 3kg of soil to bring back and test in the labs here at school. Now, as they return home, memories etched in their minds and data in hand, anticipation simmers for the culmination of their efforts—a final presentation slated for July 19th. Until then, the echoes of Cuenca's charm linger, a testament to the transformative power of exploration and camaraderie. STEM DayOur CommunityWe are pleased to announce that Bruce, a 4B student, has secured 3rd place in the first round of the National IAME X30 Championship in the Mini Swift karting category. This competition took place on May 4th and 5th at the Kartodromo in Quito. The upcoming rounds will be held in Guayaquil, Cuenca, Loja, and will conclude in Quito. Congratulations to Bruce and we wish him great success in the upcoming races! Nursery – 8.30 – 9 Reception – 9. – 9.30 Año 1 y Año 2 – 9.30 – 10.10 Años 3, 4, 5 y 6 – 1,45 – 3 Les deseo una maravillosa semana por delante. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 1A La semana pasada, Year 1 tuvo una semana muy ocupada.

BSQ – PrimaryDear BSQ Community, Last week saw a quiet and settled week in the primary school, though there were some events of note. Year 1 enjoyed a trip to Quito airport, helping them to understand the logistics of the airport and they even met the wonderful firefighting team. The trip helped to develop their knowledge and understanding of their current topic of transport. Year 4 also enjoyed a trip to the Hilacril clothes factory. They were able to explore sustainable clothes manufacturing and to speak to the workers to better understand their working conditions. This is all linked to their topic of ‘fast fashion.’ Last week also saw House Events for all students where house spirit was high and the colours of Antisana, Cayambe and Illiniza were proudly worn! All year groups are well underway in their sustainable projects now, with Year 6 thinking about healthy and sustainable food options; Year 5 designing and making chairs from sustainable materials; Year 4 questioning fast fashion and its pace in our world; Year 3 are learning about sustainable footwear; Year 2 are learning about sustainable toys; Year 1 are exploring sustainable cities and transport, and finally Early Years are learning how to reduce, re-use and recycle. Whilst our regular curriculum continues, having a focus on sustainability is truly inspiring our students to consider how they can become change makers in our world. Finally, please recall that this Saturday (May 18th) is our Family Fun Day from 10am – 2pm. Lots of fun, games and terrific food will be on offer, we look forward to seeing you there! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Nursery This term our enthusiastic Nursery students have had lots of fun exploring and learning about the world we live in! Our young learners have been fully engaged as we investigated what we need for plants to grow… we even created our very own ‘Sprout House’ so to closely observe our germinating seeds and practice our English speaking skills to identify different plant parts. It was an amazing effort by everyone as we discussed what our seeds would need to grow, before independently creating our ‘Sprout Houses’ by counting out five seeds and placing them in water soaked cotton balls. We then secured our zip lock bags and hung them from our classroom window so our observations towards germination could begin. Moreover, we had lots of fun participating in ‘World Book Day’ this term and it certainly did not take much convincing for us all to come to school dressed up as our favourite book character. Such a wonderful celebration that provided many opportunities to cultivate further our students love for connecting with stories. Not only did we dress-up and explore books - we also performed an action poem for our Reception friends about a little seed that grew into a big, beautiful tree! Not to mention creating our very own ‘Hungry Caterpillars’ through experimenting with water absorption. Reading, dressing-up, performing and experimenting – World Book Day celebrations was a fuse of fun in Nursery… as always! Gerry Coiro BSQ – Secondary What an incredible week it has been for our community! We're thrilled to announce that our residential trip to Cuenca for Year 10 and Year 12 is this week. It promises to be an enriching experience filled with adventure and learning. But that's not all! Let's not forget about our upcoming Family Fun Day this Saturday. It's a chance for everyone to come together, enjoy some quality time, and create lasting memories. Don't miss out on the excitement - be sure to purchase your tickets for the raffle and get a chance to win some fantastic prizes. See you there! Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary In Secondary we celebrated Green Week from 8th-11th April. In Monday’s LLS lesson students coloured butterflies that could camouflage into their surroundings. Enjoy finding them in some of the images below. On Wednesday we had 4 amazing guest speakers present to the students. Melissa Everett and Alyssa Rivera from Sustainable Hudson Valley New York, USA. https://www.sustainhv.org/ Melissa focuses on local communities and reducing carbon footprints on a local level in the Hudson Valley. After studying as a journalist she became interested in the environment and what could be done to maintain it. Setting up the ‘Sustainable Hudson Valley’ and implementing change in her community. Alyssa studied Sustainability Management and joined the Sustainable Hudson Valley supporting their organisation and outreach programme. Beth Huggins from Regeneration Field Institude, Manabi, Ecuador. https://www.regenerationfieldinstitute.com/ Beth’s aim is to empower the local and international community to conduct socially and ecologically regenerative work through education on the land they are determined to reforest. With Ecuador being so ecologically diverse but the primary forests being deforested action needed to be taken, and by educating local farmers on regenerative farming techniques it and students from around the world on how they can afforest has enabled animals to be restored to the forests. Lorre Maldonado Composting and educating in the local area. Lorre realised during the pandemic that isolated communities that farmed monocrops were unable to get the range of food they required to survive. She then worked with local farmers to create diverse crops with a range of produce that the community could consume without the need for trade, but questioned the use of harsh chemicals in the pesticides and herbicides. Working with people in the city she organised the collection of compost bins to generate nutrient rich soil to support the growth of the crops. Starting with a small group of friends this has since expanded. She is reducing household waste and the amount of methane produced in landfill. Thursday was a no electricity day where staff got creative in their lessons to deliver interesting and exciting work which didn’t rely on technology. Which has helped prepare us for these times where electricity shortages have presented themselves. Students in year 10 spent their English lesson analysing the poem ‘Tell Them’ by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, and year 7 looked at UN Climate Summit Poem ‘Dear Matafele Peinem’ by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner then wrote their own poems shown below. If you have any questions about sustainability at BSQ or would like to learn more about the restoration of the forests of Ecuador or the composting collection scheme or the other sustainability projects in the school, please feel free to contact. More information about dates, fixtures, and participating teams will be available in the upcoming Newsletter. BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, Despite the power cuts, last week passed with complete normality in school. A huge thanks to the maintenance team for keeping the school generator live and operational for the week. Last Tuesday saw the wonderful Dance Festival; it is always amazing to see such a celebration of Ecuadorian tradition and culture. A huge congratulations to the students for their performances and a huge thank you to the teachers for helping with costumes and of course, Mr. Fernando and Ms. Maria Fernanda for their wonderful choreography and organisation. Last Friday saw a wonderful World Book Day celebration with excellent costumes on display. The morning was spent completing activities to continue to foster a genuine love of reading for our students. A relatively normal week is in store this week though please be reminded that the whole school photograph will take place tomorrow (Tuesday April 30th) and we ask that students attend school in formal uniform on this day. Finally, we wish the best of luck to the Y3 and Y5 football teams who will be participating in rearranged fixtures this week. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 6A This term BSQ are looking at the question 'Can we reinvent the wheel?'. In Year Six we are specifically looking at veganism, and how you can take a meal containing animal products and adapt it to suit a vegan diet. We have also been looking at nutrition and how people follow different diets for a variety of reasons including culture, religion and morals. To begin our topic, each group was tasked with creating a 'vegan chilli' as part of a 'BSQ Masterchef' event. It was great to see the students apply skills they had acquired at home, such as slicing, frying, controlling a frying pan as well as peeling garlic. The students have been working in groups and they are currently designing a vegan food truck which will serve food to a special guest in the coming weeks. We are really looking forward to tasting some delicious food in the next couple of weeks as well as seeing more creativity around the designs of their companies: logos, branding, menus, slogans and more! Well done, 6A. BSQ – SecondaryDear BSQ community, We are thrilled to share the wonderful successes and activities that have taken place at our secondary school recently. First and foremost, our Year 9 students truly shined last friday during their TED Talks event, organized by Mr. Sheridan. The talks were not just presentations, but powerful expressions of ideas, passions, and concerns of our young minds. Witnessing their confidence and articulation was truly inspiring. In addition, we celebrated World Book Day with great enthusiasm, with special collaboration from our Year 7 students. The entire school joined in the festivities, dressing up and participating in a delightful parade that showcased our love for literature and creativity. Let's also extend our appreciation to Mr. Bowles and MX Griffin for leading our Year 8 students on a memorable residential trip to Mindo. Such experiences outside the classroom foster growth, camaraderie, and lasting memories for our students. Safety is paramount at our school, which is why we conduct monthly drills to prepare for natural hazards. These drills involve the whole school community, ensuring that everyone knows how to respond effectively in case of an emergency. Being prepared is not just a precaution, but a responsibility we take seriously. This Friday, May 3rd marks a bank holiday in observance of Labor Day. However, please note that our Year 11 students have official IGCSE examinations. School will be open for them to facilitate these important assessments. Additionally, this Tuesday is the whole school photo day! Don't forget to remind your children to bring their PE kit in a separate bag. Let's capture some wonderful memories together. As always, we're proud of the achievements of our students and grateful for the dedication of our staff. Together, we continue to create a vibrant and safe learning environment for all.
Un cordial saludo, Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary BSQ – PrimaryDear BSQ Community, Last week was a tricky one with the disruption to learning at the end of the week, but we look forward to a positive and hopefully undisrupted week this week. Tomorrow, Tuesday April 23rd, we host our annual BSQ Dance Festival. Students across the school have the opportunity to perform a traditional dance. The event begins at 1.30pm with doors open from 1.10pm. We look forward to seeing you there! This Friday (April 26th), due to the school closure last Friday, we will host our World Book Day celebration. Children should come to school dressed in their class's agreed theme on this day. Additionally, this day will be a half day to enable school staff to celebrate a belated Teachers’ Day. Therefore, school will finish at 12pm for students on this day. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 5B Our class really enjoyed the sports tournament last week, representing Morocco and Portugal. We spent some time making posters to celebrate the event and worked together as a team. Parents kindly got together to organise wonderful kit for the class and joined us on the day for the event. We have been very busy this week with our end of term assessments. These were tricky to say the least. We were very impressed with the students efforts with revision and their focus during the assessments. It's not all hard work in 5B though! It was Sergio's birthday and his parents came in with some lovely treats and a huge cake for everyone to enjoy. Thank you! Helen Davila BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ Community We're thrilled to announce that our school's participation in the National Chemistry Contest last week bore fruit as we proudly clinched the third place! A round of applause and hearty congratulations to Xaviera Gutierrez from Year 13 for her outstanding achievement in representing our school with excellence. As we dive into the throes of academic rigor, it's with great pride that we witness Year 11 and Year 13 commence their official examinations IGCSE and IB this week. These moments signify the culmination of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. We extend our warmest congratulations to all students embarking on this significant journey and wish them the very best of luck. Our residential trips continue to be a resounding success, enriching the educational experience and fostering a sense of exploration among our students. Last week, Year 9 embarked on an unforgettable adventure in the Amazon, immersing themselves in the vibrant ecosystems and diverse cultures of this awe-inspiring region. We've heard tales of unforgettable experiences and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. This week, it was Year 8's turn to embark on their own voyage of discovery as they ventured to Mindo. We're eagerly anticipating hearing about their adventures and the lessons they've learned along the way. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting events happening at our school. Together, let's continue to inspire, learn, and grow. Warm regards, Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Year 10 Hello, this is Nina S and Alegria writing on behalf of our year 10 tutor group! Throughout the year we have been studying a variety of topics in our classes. One of the most shocking subjects that has spoken to us the most has been learning about human rights in Sociales. Ms Montenegro showed us a movie about Martin Luther King, here is what some of our classmates thought about the movie: some said that “ it was very sentimental to watch it” and others took it as “a good life lesson”. The movie was very emotional because of the very sensitive topics it held such as racism and segregation. We found this really interesting and enjoyed learning about it. Additionally in Biology, a month ago we did a dissection of a pig's heart. Mrs Parker did this experiment so that we would be able to visualize and have a better understanding about the topic of the heart. There were mixed opinions of the dissection, while some were able to do the dissection without gloves, others felt uneasy about the quantity of blood coming out of the heart. Nevertheless, we all did it and performed our task with consideration of our studies. Overall, our first year of the iGCSE has been very difficult but fun. There have been mixed emotions throughout the year where we’ve had stressful moments due to many mini mocks that help us prepare for our finals. We have also had lots of to exciting moments like winning the Halloween costume parade which we are very proud of. Many thanks, Laura Isabela from reception and Diana from 1B showcased remarkable dedication and skill at the Leon Academy Tang Soo Do tournament. Their participation not only demonstrates their commitment to martial arts but also reflects the school's emphasis on fostering well-rounded students. Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and perseverance, inspiring their peers and contributing to the vibrant spirit of our school community.
