Thought for the week; ‘Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending’ Henry W Longfellow It seems hard to believe but here we are in the last week of this academic year, and what a year it has been! There have been so many memorable moments. As a British school, we have seen the passing of a Queen and the ascension of a King. On our campus, the development of our EYFS patio, mini-city, and classrooms, and the opening of a state-of-the-art swimming pool. We began the year with so many new faces, strangers who have now become friends. And as always, at the end of a school year, it is time to say goodbye to some of those we have come to know so well. But the year is not quite yet over, we have a packed week of activities ahead of us and are looking to see as many of you on campus as possible for our various awards ceremonies and graduation events. Please check the ‘Dates for Your Diary’ and make sure to read the sectional news from each Head of School. I hope to see most of you before the week is out, but in the meantime thank you for all your patience, support, encouragement, and boundless enthusiasm for all that is Great BSQ! Have a wonderful and well-deserved summer holiday and we look forward to all that the new academic year promises to bring. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary Wednesday, 28th June
David Jones Principal BSQ FAVORITE MOMENTS 2022-2023 BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, As the academic year draws to a close, we have the opportunity to reflect on the good times of the year. Firstly, let me thank you for welcoming me so warmly into the community. This year hasn´t been without it´s challenges but has been overwhelmingly positive with us all living and learning together each day. Last week, Year 6 enjoyed their residential to Hasquila Lodge near Tena. The students had a wonderful time completing activities, exploring the rainforest and being together before their transition into secondary. Year 4 also enjoyed a trip to the Hilacril clothes factory on Wednesday, learning about sustainable clothes manufacturing as part of their ´fast fashion´ topic. Finally, Years 1,2 and 3 enjoyed a great trip to Parque Metropolitano last Tuesday, exploring the art sculptures and the park itself. This week is one of celebration beginning with the Year 6 assembly this Wednesday at 1.30pm. All Year 6 parents are invited and are advised to arrive around 1.15pm ready for a prompt start. Thursday sees our Awards Ceromonies, beginning with Early Years at 9am and Primary following at 11am. Families of prize winners have already been informed but the ceremonies are open to all members of our community. Again, please arrive a few minutes before the ceremonies to ensure a prompt start. Thank you again for a wonderful year. I wish all the best to all of our BSQ student, families and staff members moving on to pastures new, and cannot wait to welcome back those of you returning in August for an even bigger and better year to come! I wish you a wonderful week ahead and a wonderful summer holiday. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 3A
BSQ – Secondary 23rd June 2023 The last newsletter of the academic year is upon us. As always we have had an action packed week and there is so much to look forward to as the year culminates in the Graduation event for our deserving year 13 at the end of next week. Year 11 last week enjoyed the opportunity to go on work experience. They have all have a wonderful time witnessing the pressures and opportunities of an adult working life. The range of experiences has been really wide this year with factories, corporate organisations, fashion, design, and marketing, and even working with small children in a school environment. These are really valuable opportunities to inspires careers of the future. Year 13 had their ‘Paro’ on Monday which is somewhat of a tradition, and on Tuesday we enjoyed their leavers assembly. The students paraded around the school to applause from every member of our community. Mums and dads were also involved and were very proud observers of the occasion. We enjoyed lots of student led clips, anecdotes, and messages of thanks in their assembly. It was also the opportunity for me to share some leaving words to wish them on their way. I will admit that this was a little emotional for me, but it was well worth it due to the privilege of leading the occasion. The coming week is busy with sports on Tuesday morning which is followed by the talent show. We will be choosing the 5 best acts for the final on Thursday just before the Awards Ceremony. All of the Secondary school will be at Paseo San Francisco for the reward trip to the cinema and lunch on Wednesday, and when we return the staff and students will be playing a volleyball match to conclude the day. On Thursday there will be a special staff leavers assembly first thing and an end of year quiz which will be followed by the final of the talent show. Students will be expected to empty lockers and remove their padlocks, so a bag of some sort will be needed to put things in. Once this is done they will enjoy their last form party of the year. Parents are welcome to join us from 13.30 pm for the Award ceremony and we hope to get things under way just before 2.00 pm. It is now perhaps the appropriate time to reflect on the achievements in the Secondary School over the last three years. We navigated lockdown and managed to run a full timetable online throughout the pandemic. We successfully transitioned all students and staff back to school in what was a very turbulent time. We have navigated protests to ensure that staff and students were still able to function so that student learning was maintained. Enrichment is back and we now have a full suite of residential events for every year group in the School visiting all corners of the country and the different environments it presents, including the Galapagos. All events are framed around adventure, sustainability, and environmental education. D of E has been very successful and particularly this year under the leadership of Mrs Davilla. Not only do we have Bronze recipients, we now have silvers, and, for the first time, we have registered Gold award students. This is a huge testament to the hard work of the staff who sacrifice so much for the awards success. There have been numerous community events, ongoing community projects, and various fundraising initiatives which on the whole are always student led. The school now has a student leadership team how are influential in shaping our business, and of course our academic achievement has been phenomenal. Our international exam results have been consistently above global averages for 3 years in IB and IGCSE, and we expect the same in August when the results come in. Our university destinations again see some of our students going to some of the leading universities in the US and Europe. All of this only comes from hard work, extremely high standards and expectations, and commitment from the staff, the students, and of course you as parents. I am very proud of all of our teachers and students for what they have achieved in my time at BSQ. This year has been a challenge as is the case every year. Considering how much movement there was with staff leaving and joining last summer, what has transpired has been incredible! I will look on from afar and keep abreast of developments and the inevitable successes of the future. BSQ has been a wonderful experience professionally for me and Natalie, and personally for all of my family, and we will miss the place and its community enormously. Thank you for the support and the memories, and the best of luck for the future. Lee Moors Head of Secondary Let's celebrate our success! Dear school community, We are thrilled to share exciting news that fills us with pride: we have achieved one of the top five positions in an international competition for presenting projects related to social impact and community development through the use of sports as a powerful tool for change! Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 3A
Lee Moors Head of Secondary ¡Celebremos nuestro éxito! ¡Estimada comunidad escolar! Thought for the week; “Punctuality does not just refer to arriving at a location on time; it also refers to taking actions on time.” Source unknown Congratulations to Oscar Tabango and our two year 12 students, Martin Carrera and Bernarda Conrrado. After being selected to represent Ecuador in Qatar, they have now beaten off international competition to make it through to the finals of the Goal 22 social development projects in Miami. We are very proud of them and wish them the best of luck in this next leg of the competition. Some important administrative announcements for this week. Our Annual Awards Ceremonies are rapidly approaching. If your son or daughter has been nominated for an award you will receive a personal invitation to the event. All members of the community are cordially invited but we know that the event obviously has more appeal if your child is due to receive an award. We have now sent out the re-enrollment link for reserving your child’s place for the next academic year. Please complete this as soon as you can as we are already in the process of forming our class groups for the next academic year. If you have been supporting our plastic recycling campaign ´Botellas de Amor’ then please make sure to send in any plastic filled bottles that you have at home by the end of this week. The recycling organisation will be coming to collect everything on Friday. Please note that Ms. Sandy Pazmiño is out of school taking a short break. She will be back on Wednesday. If you need anything in the meantime, please contact Ms. Victoria Naranjo: [email protected] And finally, please don’t forget to send us a photo of your favourite moment from this academic year for our end-of-year photo collage. We wish you all a very good week. This transition process is incredibly important in preparing students for the next academic year. It is also important for leaving students to support them in their transition away from BSQ. This week, we wish our Year 1,2 and 3 students a great trip when they visit Parque Metropolitano on Tuesday to see the art installations on display. Year 4 are also on a trip on Wednesday, visiting a clothes factory to further their understanding on their topic of ´fast fashion.´ Additionally, we wish Year 6 the best of fun on their trip down to Tena on Wednesday for their residential at Hasquila Lodge. A great three days await them! Next week is our final week of term with the final day for primary students being Thursday June 29th, the day of the awards ceremonies. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 2 In Year 2, we are in the process of creating a 'money bank' in Art lessons. Over the past 2 weeks, we have been using a balloon and papier mâché to create the foundation for our 'money banks'. Next week, we are going to begin decorating our 'money banks' in the design of an animal (see the example picture). We are all very excited to see how they turn out! Ms. Hannah Kerigan BSQ – Secondary 16th June 2023 What a week! It has been amazing to welcome our largest ever cohort to year 7 during transition this week with Year 6 enjoying 3 action packed days enjoying time with their new secondary teachers. There will be a 2 form entry to the Secondary School for the first time next year which is an excellent example of growth for the Secondary School. The students have been experiencing the freedoms of Secondary life with the need to follow a timetable, independently being organised and in place at the right time, and enjoying the freedoms of breaks and lunch activities. The access to the older students for the lunchtime football has been very competitive with those taking part having a great time. I personally enjoyed taking them all for their PE lesson and I have to say I am very impressed by each and every one of them with regard to their teamwork and how hard they worked for me. As I write I am listening to all of KS3, including the year 6 students playing ‘Quidditch’ on the field, made famous from the Harry Potter Films. This is a secondary school favourite event which we invested in last year by buying the goals. I am sure that Mr McNeil and Mr Prosser will share wider photographs with you all. A huge well done to Miss Standley and all of the other staff in the background for making this such a successful and well received event. Hopefully all of the year 6 students are now looking forward to moving into Secondary as well as now having the start of some really positive relationships with their new Secondary teachers. Year 11 have been in the Galapagos this week and from what I have heard this has been far from a holiday. They have been trekking, doing conservation work, and spending much time swimming and exploring the outstanding marine environment that the Galapagos offers. I am sure that life long memories have been forged through the experience. We all look forward to some pictures and a report from them all next week when they return. Thank you again to Mr Butler and Mrs Rocio for ensuring they had a great time and were safe. Staff taking students on these events make a huge commitment and sacrifice of time for them to be successful. They both deserve our thanks. I spent a couple of days putting year 12 to the test in their leadership experience this week. This is now an annual event to put some training in place for the year 12 as they transition to year 13, the next leaders of the school. This is also an event that allows us to look closely at them to inform our decisions about appointments to the Student Head of school roles. We have now made our decisions and these will be presented at the Award ceremony on the 29th. There experienced dry team building tasks, critical thinking and communication tasks, and to finish it off on the Monday there were water based challenges that ended up in our new pool. On Tuesday we visited a teambuilding provider off site and had a fantastic day with other activities and leaders that tested everyone. As you can see from the pictures everyone had a very challenging, and fun time. We are getting very close to the end of the term now and next week we are saying farewell to our year 13 students. Their leavers assembly takes place on Tuesday and I am sure that there will be some tears as they process through the school and listen to my farewell words for them. I am extremely proud of them all for their achievements due to the challenges they have faced over the last 4 years. If you are a year 13 parent, please try to come along as this is my chance to say a few words as I am unable to attend the Graduation event this year. After next week we are into the last week of celebrations. I am pleased to say that we have lots of fun planned with a visit to the cinema for all, and lots of fun activities planned on site. Just when we should be relaxing a little we are actually upping the pace to finish in a crescendo. Lee Moors Head of Secondary Year 12 Group 4 Project On Friday 16th Year 12 presented their group 4 project research and conclusions to the group. The presentations were fantastic and I was very impressed with the amount of hard work and dedication they showed. The presentations were a culmination of all of the work they did planning their investigation before their trip to Mindo, the data collection they completed on the field trip to Mindo and then analysing their results. They worked fantastically well in their groups, collaborating and using their scientific skills to analyse their results. They now have a solid understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific methods. They understand the limitations of scientific study, and have developed essential skills which will benefit them in their future studies and world of work, such a collaboration, communication and presentation skills. Well done Year 12!!!! ¡Bien hecho Year 12! This was a fantastic event, and it was wonderful to see the children enjoying a range of sports and games. We´re already excited for next year! This week is transition week in primary. For Year 6 students, this means spending Wednesday to Friday in the secondary school, preparing them for next academic year. For the remainder of primary and Early Years, on Friday, children will join their new classes and new class teacher for a session in preparation for next academic year too. We are also thankful to Ms. Erica Sereni, a new Year 3 teacher who will be joining us virtually from her current school in Colombia, and Reception teacher, Ms. Olivia Lockwood, who will be joining us virtually from her maternity leave. On Thursday, parents from Nursery to Year 5 will receive a letter informing them who will be their child´s class teacher for the new academic year. As we approach the end of the school year, we look forward to our annual awards ceremonies that take place on Thursday June 29th. This year, the Early Years ceremony will take place at 9am and the Primary ceremony will take place at 11am. We hope that you can join us. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. BSQ – Secondary 9th June 2023 It filled me with great pride on Thursday to be able to stand in front of year 11 at the end of their last exam and congratulate them on a job very well done! When I first arrived at BSQ they were for me my online year 9 PE class. Even at that time they presented me with the opinion that they were generally unruffled by adversity, and when asked they were quick to produce outstanding and extremely thorough work. They have navigated an extremely challenging era in education and for many around the world this has impacted outcomes negatively as they reach the end of their exams. Not for them. Their approach to workload, the need for their own accountability, and specifically their determination to prepare for each and every exam is commendable. I am confident that they will get what they deserve on the 16th of August when their results arrive. I am incredibly proud of each of them and I am happy to admit that there was a little emotion stirred in me as they left the room. The school and the teachers next year will enjoy teaching them in their new IB courses. Good luck to you all. Another week has passed and we are closer to the end. Our focus is now on celebration and the many successes of the year and this term specifically. A reminder that the end of year Award ceremony will take place on Thursday 29th June where all of the prizes and special commendations will be made. Please save the date for this. We will be starting the event at lunch time on the day and there will be more specific information enclosed on the invitations that are to follow. We will also be saying thank you to our exemplary Heads of School and helping them present their responsibilities to the new appointments for next year. This will now be a tradition for years to come. It will also be my opportunity to say thank you and leave some thoughts as we end our time at this wonderful school. I do hope you can all be there to celebrate with us all and of course say farewell. Our outstanding year 13 students have had a couple of weeks of different curriculum activities to help prepare them for the challenges that face them as they head into adulthood and the responsibilities this demands. They have been learning to dance, along with some guidance on being safe and keeping out of danger. They have been shopping on a budget and cooked their purchases and this week have considered sexual health and healthy relationships. Their leavers assembly is fast approaching and we are returning to the tradition of them processing through the school campus with the rest of the student’s and staff clapping them through a celebration and farewell human tunnel. Year 13 parents will also be here to witness this and for me this is the perfect opportunity to say some words for them as they move into the future and leave us. The Graduation this year is later in the afternoon on Friday the 30th June which was the tradition prior to the pandemic. Unfortunately for me and Natalie we are flying to the UK with our family that afternoon as we both start our new jobs in England on the Monday morning. This means that we are unable to take part in the graduation ceremony. I hope therefore that all year 13 parents can be at the leavers assembly to hear the speech, celebrate their success and departure, and hear our farewells. Finally, I wish the staff and year 11 a safe journey to the Galapagos this week. This is such an exciting project for them to experience and we all look forward to hearing about the work they have been doing on the island of San Christabel in the different environmental and sustainability projects they will be witnessing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Sara for her organisation of the vaccination day last Tuesday. The morning ran smoothly, and we are pleased that so many of our community were able to take advantage of this opportunity to increase their protection against a range of illnesses. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 1 have been working so hard this year! Last term in Literacy, we started the term looking at Zog which led perfectly into our amazing Zog related costumes for World Book Day. We then spent some time looking at letter writing, we used the book ‘Dear Dragon’ to write some letters to mythical creatures and then to write pen-pal letters to our friends at the Britannica International School in Shanghai. It was so much fun connecting with children that live somewhere very different to us! In Maths, we learnt about measurement. We used lots of different measuring tools including metre sticks, balance scales and measuring cylinders! Now we are looking at fractions, such as a half and a quarter, which we have practised by cutting shapes in half and into quarters. In Topic last term, we focused on Latin American artists. This was super interesting, we started by learning about an artist and then we would complete a piece of artwork in their styles. In Art, we learnt about primary and secondary colours and then used colour wheels to discover the complementary colours. Look at the fun we had last term! https://www.canva.com/design/DAFkbEn88EA/kfm9CNvlQeFcvjd5FINGAg/edit?utm_content=DAFkbEn88EA&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton We look forward to this term, where we are doing some Project Based Learning which will result in our own model Sustainable City! We will learn about sustainable energy sources, transport methods and buildings! It will be great! Msr. Hannah Jones BSQ – Secondary 2nd June 2023 It has been a busy week with all students back on campus. Year 11 are away again on study leave next week with the final science exams. They then go to the Galapagos and also enjoy their work experience before a return at the end of term. We are now looking at the last week and particularly the two days where we have reward and cultural events and the obligatory end of year fun and games. We are looking at some exciting options and more detail on this will follow. Everyone will certainly enjoys that last few days with so much to celebrate. I was absolutely humbled on Thursday to have had the opportunity to take part in the year 12 visit to their CAS project supporting the ‘Sinsoluka’ charity in central Quito. The charity is essentially a safe facility serving very vulnerable children in a significantly challenging and socially deprived area of the city. The centre makes provision of the basics that we perhaps all take for granted, safety, love, care, food, shelter, support with education, and somewhere to just play and be a kid. In the early days as it evolved, industrial glue sniffing and homelessness of children was its priority. Children there are exposed to some of the most concerning dangers in society. BSQ has a history of working with the project with donated computers, books, a library, and the annual visit on Children’s Day where our students spend their time organising games, food, and presenting donated toys and toiletries. Once again I was left incredibly proud of just how amazing and confident our young adults are at BSQ. They are caring and selfless in giving their time, they gave their love, warmth, and attention to children who are at the polar opposite of their society. In 1943 Abraham Maslow proposed his ‘Hierarchy of needs’ as a theory of motivation which illustrated five categories of human needs that lay the foundation of behaviour. Behaviour can be interpreted as how a child approaches life, its challenges, relationships and socialisation. These needs categories are physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. This is illustrated in his model below. He theorised that if layers of these were missing then developmental behaviour and normality is challenged. I encourage you all to reflect on this and how we afford these as normality for our children. Many more out there in the world are not afforded the same. ‘Sinsoluka’ and the amazing work that Mario and his team are doing is trying to secure the very basic elements of these needs for the children there, and I am proud that we are involved in such an important project for the many less advantaged children in danger in Quito. Well done also to Mr Bowles, Mrs Berry and the determined students in year 8 who are being challenged to collect plastics for the recycled furniture project. If you go through the drive through do look at the cage at the end of the Primary waiting area you will notice a container that you can put plastic bottles stuffed with other plastic waste. The intention is that when this is complete the collected plastic will be transformed into recycled plastic garden furniture for the school. Mr Bowles collected 10 containers himself and involved the year 8 in placing them with the collection. I understand that he has set them a challenge for a potential pizza party at the end of term. Good luck Year 8 and I hope you have been inspired Lee Moors Head of Secondary Extracurricular Activities We invite parents to experience the student's karate exhibition. You can't miss it! Mr. Bowles recolectó 10 envases él mismo e involucró a Year 8 para introducirlos.
