This week Year 1 and Year 2 are visiting Quito Airport on a trip. They will be learning about how the airport works behind the scenes and will meet the people who keep the airport running. On Tuesday, we will have photographers in school in order to update our bank of photos that are used on our website, social media etc. Please ensure that as always, students are in the correct uniform on this day. Also, Thursday is primary sports day. Please be reminded that Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2 parents are invited into school at 8.45 - 10.15 and Year 3,4,5 & 6 parents are invited into school from 13.15 - 15.00. We can´t wait to showcase the skills that the children have been learning in P.E lessons. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Sara for her organisation of the vaccination day last Tuesday. The morning ran smoothly, and we are pleased that so many of our community were able to take advantage of this opportunity to increase their protection against a range of illnesses. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 1 have been working so hard this year! Last term in Literacy, we started the term looking at Zog which led perfectly into our amazing Zog related costumes for World Book Day. We then spent some time looking at letter writing, we used the book ‘Dear Dragon’ to write some letters to mythical creatures and then to write pen-pal letters to our friends at the Britannica International School in Shanghai. It was so much fun connecting with children that live somewhere very different to us! In Maths, we learnt about measurement. We used lots of different measuring tools including metre sticks, balance scales and measuring cylinders! Now we are looking at fractions, such as a half and a quarter, which we have practised by cutting shapes in half and into quarters. In Topic last term, we focused on Latin American artists. This was super interesting, we started by learning about an artist and then we would complete a piece of artwork in their styles. In Art, we learnt about primary and secondary colours and then used colour wheels to discover the complementary colours. Look at the fun we had last term! https://www.canva.com/design/DAFkbEn88EA/kfm9CNvlQeFcvjd5FINGAg/edit?utm_content=DAFkbEn88EA&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton We look forward to this term, where we are doing some Project Based Learning which will result in our own model Sustainable City! We will learn about sustainable energy sources, transport methods and buildings! It will be great! Msr. Hannah Jones BSQ – Secondary 2nd June 2023 It has been a busy week with all students back on campus. Year 11 are away again on study leave next week with the final science exams. They then go to the Galapagos and also enjoy their work experience before a return at the end of term. We are now looking at the last week and particularly the two days where we have reward and cultural events and the obligatory end of year fun and games. We are looking at some exciting options and more detail on this will follow. Everyone will certainly enjoys that last few days with so much to celebrate. I was absolutely humbled on Thursday to have had the opportunity to take part in the year 12 visit to their CAS project supporting the ‘Sinsoluka’ charity in central Quito. The charity is essentially a safe facility serving very vulnerable children in a significantly challenging and socially deprived area of the city. The centre makes provision of the basics that we perhaps all take for granted, safety, love, care, food, shelter, support with education, and somewhere to just play and be a kid. In the early days as it evolved, industrial glue sniffing and homelessness of children was its priority. Children there are exposed to some of the most concerning dangers in society. BSQ has a history of working with the project with donated computers, books, a library, and the annual visit on Children’s Day where our students spend their time organising games, food, and presenting donated toys and toiletries. Once again I was left incredibly proud of just how amazing and confident our young adults are at BSQ. They are caring and selfless in giving their time, they gave their love, warmth, and attention to children who are at the polar opposite of their society. In 1943 Abraham Maslow proposed his ‘Hierarchy of needs’ as a theory of motivation which illustrated five categories of human needs that lay the foundation of behaviour. Behaviour can be interpreted as how a child approaches life, its challenges, relationships and socialisation. These needs categories are physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. This is illustrated in his model below. He theorised that if layers of these were missing then developmental behaviour and normality is challenged. I encourage you all to reflect on this and how we afford these as normality for our children. Many more out there in the world are not afforded the same. ‘Sinsoluka’ and the amazing work that Mario and his team are doing is trying to secure the very basic elements of these needs for the children there, and I am proud that we are involved in such an important project for the many less advantaged children in danger in Quito. Well done also to Mr Bowles, Mrs Berry and the determined students in year 8 who are being challenged to collect plastics for the recycled furniture project. If you go through the drive through do look at the cage at the end of the Primary waiting area you will notice a container that you can put plastic bottles stuffed with other plastic waste. The intention is that when this is complete the collected plastic will be transformed into recycled plastic garden furniture for the school. Mr Bowles collected 10 containers himself and involved the year 8 in placing them with the collection. I understand that he has set them a challenge for a potential pizza party at the end of term. Good luck Year 8 and I hope you have been inspired Lee Moors Head of Secondary Extracurricular Activities We invite parents to experience the student's karate exhibition. You can't miss it! Mr. Bowles recolectó 10 envases él mismo e involucró a Year 8 para introducirlos.
