Welcome Now that our learners are back in the classroom there is – once again – a vibrancy and focus on the campus and staff and students are enjoying exploring the curriculum face to face and catching up after the extended time at home. We have all become used to the way in which we need to react to changing situations efficiently and quickly and since it is quite likely we will have to do so again in the future these qualities will come in handy. Fortunately, the BSQ community is made up of resilient, positive and supportive people (staff, students and parents) who know that the best way to achieve success is to work together. As always, my thanks go out to all community members for always being ready to listen and respond. Lots of groups, companies and organisations have mottos or slogans that suggest they are always ready. For example: Here at BSQ, our values drive our responses and the words ´active and determined approach´, sum that up. This month we have shared the Orbital Schools parent survey with you and, as always, we look forward to your responses and to maintaining our strong position in the group for parent satisfaction. Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. SSD Article It is important that we teach children to use technology in a healthy way and develop the skills and habits that will make them successful digital citizens. The Student Support Department would like to walk you through how to make technology work for your family; from 3 year olds who seem to understand devices better than us to teenagers who need some (but not too much) freedom. Dates for your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars.
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update It was really great to see the campus come alive last week with the sounds of students learning and engaging with each other again. Although we still have to take a great many precautions to keep our community safe, it is worth it every time we see that ‘lightbulb’ moment when a student learns something new, experiences something new or succeeds after several attempts at an activity. Of course, research shows that learning is often not linear; that is, it does not happen incrementally in every case and we do often get those ‘lightbulb’ moments when we feel we understand a new concept. However, it is the links we make with prior learning that determines our ability to understand new concepts, which is why here at BSQ we follow a spiral curriculum that revisits key concepts over a series of weeks, months and even years. Each time we revisit a concept, the skill or concept is covered in greater depth, linked to the knowledge and understanding the students have already mastered. This is why it is important to learn some basic skills, for instance, in mathematics, as these serve as the building blocks for future knowledge and skill acquisition. This week, the students in Primary will focus on the value of kindness throughout the week, sharing messages for their friends and teachers and being encouraged to display acts of kindness around the campus. Thank you to all the parents who are continuing to use the name signs we provided for Drive Through - this makes it much easier to identify your cars and get you through more efficiently. If you would like a new sign, please do let us know, or even make your own (we have seen some great designs already!). Marcus Madden Head of Primary Y1B contribution This term, Year 1 B have been thinking about the regions of Ecuador and the plants and animals that live in them. We have learnt the words for different animal body parts in English and thought of adjectives to describe them (sharp teeth, colourful feathers, long beak). In Art, we used different techniques to create an Amazon jungle scene. We used forks to create the bark on the trees, cotton wool for clouds and leaves and splashed our paint brushes to show the light shining through the trees. Kind regards, Ms. Natalie and Ms. Gaby Being BSQ – Secondary Update Finally – excitement, smiles, and reunions We have all experienced quite a lot of frustration over the last couple of weeks but I imagine everyone appreciates the caution and careful considerations before we put everyone together again on site. It really was lovely to see the relief and excitement for the children when they were reunited with their friends and their teachers. We have had to be quite creative with staffing the timetable with a small number of colleagues enduring further time at home. We are happy that they are teaching online and students are on devices where possible in classrooms with another teacher supervising. Whilst this is not a perfect solution it does mean that children are together in school and learning is being managed and supervised. From my own experience supervising this week, this does seem to be working as a compromise. A reminder for those students who do find themselves at home still – we are not teaching classes online currently. All students are present with teachers. If a child is away they should be aware of where they can get access to the lesson resources that they have missed so they can work at home. If there is a need for questions or additional guidance I recommend contact with the teacher by email. Some teachers are likely to share resources in the lesson by email directly to all but this is not expected. Year 11 finally began their long-awaited mock exams last week. The start has been strong and all are embracing the level of expectation and challenge. I ask that parents support at home and encourage preparation through revision and other practice activities. These really are an important gauge for teachers to see what is required next and we want everyone to achieve at their potential. I am a little concerned by the appearance of some of our older students at school this week with regard to dress and appropriate uniform. I would like to remind everyone that a full school uniform including a shirt and tie is expected every day. School PE kit can be worn on days that PE is on the timetable. Streetwear and non-school garments with logos are not allowed. Finally, again our congratulations must go to Ignacio who is again playing internationally at Tennis. He has had some recent success in Venezuela where two weeks ago he played the G2 South American Tournament in Valencia, and he became singles champion and doubles runner up! He is currently in Guayaquil playing another south American tournament and next week he is off to Peru to play again there. A very busy young man indeed. Y10A: Visual Arts The visual Arts students of Year 10 have already started their first art portfolio for the component 1 of the IGCSE programme in visual Arts and Design. The topic of this project is Alive, and students have interpreted it as they want. Some of them focused on portraits, hybrid beings, plants, animals and environment and the art making forms are varied as well (graphite, acrylics, watercolors, color pencils, oil pastels and more. The results of their studies have been amazing so far, I hope you enjoy them! Ms. Belén Arellano, Visual Art Teacher | Y10A tutor Have a wonderful week everyone.

Srta. Belén Arellano, Profesora de Arte | Tutora de Año 10A . Que tengan una semana maravillosa.
Lee Moors Director de Secundaria Welcome There is a great deal written about change and some very well-known phrases linked to the concept as you can see here. Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. Barack Obama It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. Charles Darwin Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself. Rumi And of course, the simple fact that there will always be change in our lives should equip us to deal with it effectively. There is nothing permanent except change. Heraclitus As we move through this academic year, we are still focusing on adapting and changing as the world around us continues to present new challenges and new opportunities. Each year there will be some staff changes at BSQ and this coming year we have the exciting opportunity to welcome our new Head of Primary. Introduction As you will know, last term we undertook an extensive and rigorous search for a new Head of Primary. School leaders, staff, students and parents all participated in this and I am delighted to share the news that we have appointed a replacement for Mr. Madden. Mr. Lewis Hutchinson will be joining us with his family and I have asked him to introduce himself to you. As you can see, he is already familiar with our values and looking forward to continuing and further developing the excellent provision already in place. My name is Lewis Hutchinson and I am incredibly excited to be joining the British School, Quito family as the new Head of Primary. I will be travelling to Quito with my wife, Jade, and our two children; Maxwell aged 8 and Lyla aged 6. I have spent the past 5 years as a senior leader in Amman, Jordan and prior to that I spent a number of years teaching and leading in the UK. I truly value being a contributor to a strong school community and from the conversations that I have had so far with BSQ staff, parents and students, it is clear to see what a wonderful, welcoming and supportive community has been built. I wish you all success this academic year and I am very much looking forward to arriving in Quito this summer to live and learn together. Saludos, Lewis Hutchinson Enrichment developments following the parent survey I am really excited to be able to update you on our developments with the extra-curricular programme at BSQ. This has been something that has been missed enormously by students and staff with the limitations placed on the activities due to being online. You will recall the recent survey which was designed to gauge parent opinion on where we go next. If you took the time to contribute I am grateful as your input was extremely useful. So far, we have been overwhelmed with the enthusiastic responses we have gathered. We really appreciate the time you took in filling out this form. Extracurricular activities are a perfect way to explore other interests alongside the academic curriculum at school. We are absolutely determined to develop our children holistically and allow them to explore interest areas and find something that they are passionate about. This approach provides a healthy way for students to develop self-esteem and their social interaction, and in turn, also contribute to our community ethos. We now have a much clearer understanding of our communities wishes and moving forward we will work hard on developing a plan to secure a broad and rich programme. It is also clear that you are happy to contribute to additional activities such as sport and the arts after school, with outside specialists coming to the campus, and also with opportunities for activities to take place off site. This is really exciting and we are now exploring opportunities so that we are ready to put them into place when we can. If you would like to add anything further and you have not had the opportunity yet, do feel free to email me at: [email protected] I will be in touch further as developments unfold. Ms. Martinez, Enrichment lead at BSQ Dates for your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars.
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update As we continue with our Online Learning provision at the beginning of this week, it is just as important as ever to support our students both academically and emotionally as they access their learning online. Our teachers work hard to vary the pace, content and structure of the online lessons to keep the students engaged and able to participate with their classmates, using a variety of online tools and apps to support them. We always encourage the students, from whichever stage of the school they are in, to join in with the lessons, share their ideas using the public chat or microphone and to use their camera as much as possible so we can see them in person. While we appreciate this is not always possible, due to technology concerns and other circumstances, this greatly improves the interactions between the students and their teachers and creates a more conducive environment for learning to occur. Please note, to facilitate all returning staff to the campus having a rapid COVID test, the 8am online session on Tuesday 25th January will be cancelled. Normal sessions will resume from 8:45am onwards. On Wednesday we welcome back our Early Years Students to the BSQ campus; our Caterpillar students will remain at school until 12pm, with Dragonfly students remaining at school until 3:10pm. On Thursday, we welcome back students from Years 1-5, with Year 6 students remaining online for the remainder of the week. Please send all of your child’s school books and other materials so that we can continue our learning at school. Please note that from Wednesday 2nd February, all students from Dragonfly class up to Year 6 will remain at school until 3:10pm every Wednesday to allow us to have our enrichment activities in school. Please continue to look regularly at the Canvas Parent Portal (and Tapestry posts for EYFS) and the BSQ Newsletter to keep up-to-date with news from school. Our teachers continue to be available during normal school working hours for school-related questions - please avoid contacting them in the evenings and weekends, as this is the time they have to prepare their next sessions. We also look forward to Miss Lilly Lockwood joining our Early Years Team to work alongside Isobel Anderson and Renata Vasconez for the remainder of the week, before Miss Anderson leaves BSQ to return to the UK to have her baby. We wish Isobel all the best in this next phase of her life and thank you for all her wonderful care and teaching in the Early Years. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update The wider curriculum It is really wonderful to see how many of you engaged with the recent survey to gauge your thoughts on how we should develop the enrichment program at BSQ. This is an exciting time of development and this is something that is critically important with developing the holistic learning of our children. Our curriculum aims to develop not only academic learning but also areas of interest known, or as yet unknown. Our job is to provide as many opportunities and experiences as we can so that students get to try things and perhaps discover their talent. This activity extends to social and mental development with children developing relationships and interpersonal skills, and through personal success enjoy personal satisfaction, greater self-efficacy, and confidence. What has come from your feedback is your support for after-school activities along with our normal enrichment activities on Wednesdays - not only developing these but also having the opportunity to pay for additional and more specialist activities. Miss. Martinez, myself, and Mrs. Newman will be working with key staff over the next couple of weeks to look at the shape of opportunities for the remainder of the year and perhaps more significant development for next year. More to come on this as we move forward. For now, we are aiming to introduce after-school activities as soon as possible with options for those students who wish to participate. As ever, we are of course waiting on far higher approval, and for now, we will plan for the moment we can act. Ms. Sadotra has been busy again this week with all of the changes for year 11 and IGCSE exams. There is uncertainty at present, but we are determined to facilitate the appropriate experience for them. She has also been reflecting on the assertive mentoring program with staff and how students have responded with higher outcomes. This is a really important exercise as students may have achieved to the point where the support is no longer required, but equally, there may be students who have slipped slightly and may need to be added to the strategy. Ms. Todd has been reflecting on the start of the values program in Key stage 3. This aims to encourage students to find opportunities to develop values and gain from the motivation that self-driven success rewards intrinsically. We are only a couple of weeks in but the staff who are delivering the activities have been very supportive about the strategy and from what I have seen in the sessions I have dropped into; students are responding very well. She is now looking at the next phase of development with year 12. With this year group, we will be focusing on leadership. The activity will culminate in a leadership training event in June, and along with previous activities and experiences, we will use this to decide on Prefects, a Head Boy, and a Head Girl for the next academic year. These will be new positions of responsibility and there will be extremely high expectations of those involved. Younger students will look to them to aspire to be in similar positions of responsibility when it is their time, and also learn from their example. There will be much more on this exciting development to follow. Mrs. Montenegro has been focusing on IB this week to ensure that we have continuity in curriculum planning and she has also been starting to look at the requirements for our accreditation review which comes next year. This is an incredibly busy time for her and Miss Sadotra with the administrative parts of their roles for Cambridge and IB. Exam season is nearly upon us and there is much to do. Finally, from me, I ask that you support us as much as possible in ensuring that your son or daughter attends every lesson and follows up on the work set or homework expected. Online lessons are shorter but they must use the off-screen time to complete work. Don’t just switch off and move on. We are online currently and it is very easy for a student to be absent. This is an important time in the year and everyone has lots to do. It does not take long to fall seriously behind. Currently, recuperation is planned for the first week of July so let’s all work hard now before we have the need to use this intervention. Y12B In 12B during the lead up to Christmas the students have been working hard in LLS talking through issues such as online safety, mindfulness, organisation and anti-racism, among others. Throughout these sessions the students have shown remarkable open-mindedness, a genuine desire to listen to each other and consider each other's ideas in context and have generally proven themselves to be exemplary global citizens with the values of tolerance and diversity at the forefront of their world views. The students have in turn created a fantastic, supportive environment within the tutor group allowing every member a space to be themselves and feel comfortable doing so. As tutors we look forward to seeing the students continue to develop as individuals and are proud to be tutors of such a great group. Mr. Matthias Lee and Ms. Nadine Parker, Y12B tutors Have a wonderful week everyone.
Lee Moors Director de Secundaria Welcome Here at BSQ we know that the most important element of our teaching – whatever the age of the student – is learning vocabulary. Without the words to understand the lessons, the content and the concepts, it is impossible to fully and deeply secure the learning you need. Words are so important that the philosopher Wittgenstein once said that ‘The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.’ Of course, on a basic level we understand from this that without an extensive vocabulary our understanding, enjoyment and exploration of the world is very narrow and shallow. So, at BSQ we focus on learning vocabulary in every subject and it is useful to share with you some of the ways we do that. Here are three top tips you can use at home too.
Your class and subject teachers all use strategies like this and more to support the learning of new vocabulary so please do contact them if you would like any more ideas. Update from Dra. Sara As part of our commitment to keep our community safe, we are constantly reviewing the national and international studies, public information and recommendations. Due to the current situation of the circulation of new variants and the increase of the number of positive cases since December 2021, it is our expectation that all members of our community use the KN95 face mask as the standard for protection. The evidence supports that all masks offer some protection, but there are some more effective than others. The urging to use cloth masks at the beginning of the pandemic came due to the shortage of masks and other biosecurity protective gear for health care workers, but that is no longer the case, as all types of masks are widely available everywhere. As well, the manufacturing of cloth masks is unregulated, for this reason it’s hard to make sure they are properly made. Following you’ll find a very illustrative table that summarizes the difference between the types of masks: Source: ACGIH You can confirm the information and refresh the correct use of masks, the difference between all the types and other information on the following links: FDA: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/personal-protective-equipment-infection-control/n95-respirators-surgical-masks-face-masks-and-barrier-face-coverings CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/infection-control-recommendations.html NHS: https://www.england.nhs.uk/coronavirus/secondary-care/infection-control/ppe/ffp3/ Dates for your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars.
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update This week we remain online following the COE national announcement, with all online sessions delivered through Canvas. Your child’s class teachers will share with you the resources and timetable - if you have any questions about these, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or the relevant phase leader. This week, Year 6 parents are all invited to a discussion about the Year 6 Trip in May to Ceibo on Tuesday 18th January at 6pm on the Year 6 Canvas page. This will be an opportunity to find out all about the activities on offer, the safety arrangements and ask any questions you may have about this trip directly to Marcelo, the Ceibo representative, and Mr Kyle. This week we also have two Online Introduction Sessions for prospective parents - if you have any friends or family that would like to join these, please do contact me and I will arrange for them to be invited. I always enjoy sharing the school’s strengths and ethos at these events; as I speak about the students and the school I feel immense pride in our collective achievements as a school community and the way we live and learn together to support our students to be the very best they can be. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Reception Dear parents, Over the last two weeks, the Dragonflies have been working on their numeracy skills, specifically in counting numbers 1-10, recognising and naming these, ordering them and matching them to their corresponding quantity. Below you will find 3 great ways that you can practise these skills at home! Number war: Take a deck of cards and only keep the numbers, split them in two piles, find a partner and begin playing. At the same time flip the top card over, the highest card takes both, and the person with the most cards at the end of the round wins!. Number cups: Have 11 cups and number them from 0-10. Scramble these and ask your child to order them in a straight line. Once this is done, you can ask them to jump over them as they count aloud, this can be done forward or backward. You can also use these cups to bowl, ask your child to hit a specific number or count how many they hit and how many are left standing at the end of each round. Finally, you can use these cups to create different numbers from 1-98 and you can ask your child to name these. Can your child make a number you ask for? Ten-frames: This simple tool/strategy can be used to reinforce many skills needed in the world of Mathematics. Here you see one of our Dragonflies using the ten-frame to count rehearse understanding of one more and one less. After rehearsing this, ask your child to close their eyes and you can add or take away a few counters, can your child name the number now without counting? Are they able to recognise how many you took away or added? This is also useful when learning to subsidise. Kind regards, Ms. Antonella Coronel, Reception Teacher Being BSQ – Secondary Update Almost but not quite… Safety in caution Once again last week I was enormously impressed with the attendance and involvement in lessons. Can I take the opportunity to remind you all that (when we return to school) no students should attend with any sickness symptoms. It is critical that we make the school environment illness free to be on the safe side for all. Please keep coughs, colds and sneezes at home in case it might be the worst. We have improvised with the Year 11 mock exams to ensure that students receive fair Q1 reports and data. Normally the mocks would play a role in deciding outcomes but the timescales are too short with the delay. It is important that year 11 sit these in the way that they will experience the real thing in April/May which is why we preferred a postponement so that we can take these exams at school. It is to the credit of year 11 how well they received the news and just rolled with it. Once again this evidence shows how resilient and flexible our pupils are against adversity. I have read this week some interesting data and opinion on the last normal year that students have experienced in school and the impact that this has had on education. There has been much commentary in the media and within education about the coming exam season. The following image is quite stark when you consider the journey students and staff have been through. With year 11 as a case study and the importance of the fast-approaching international exams, it is important to note that they have had disruption for the last three years. Even more significantly, year 13 missed the formative year 11 where they sit formal exams and cope with the pressures of assessment, thus the experience and the lessons the experience instills are absent. This is why we are determined to give those important experiences and prepare them for the assessment rigor and pressures to come over the next few months. Looking ahead we have a couple of events to look forward to. On the 27th January, Year 11 and 13 parents will be meeting teaching staff to discuss performance in the mock exams. Around the 7th of February, you will be receiving Q1/P2 written reports. On the 18th February Year 11 will be enjoying a career and IB information day being led by Mrs. Montenegro and Miss Leon and finally, towards the end of February there is a science focus for the majority of the school and at the same time year 9 will enjoy some IGCSE experiences before choosing options for next year and year 11 can experience the same with IB subjects. As ever there are always things to look forward to ahead. Have a wonderful week everyone.
Emma Newman Directora BSQ – Primaria ¡Feliz año nuevo a toda nuestra comunidad BSQ! Lee Moors
Director de Secundaria WelcomeA very warm welcome back to the first BSQ newsletter of 2022 to everyone in the community. A new year brings with it new opportunities for everyone to make a resolution. What will yours be? The most popular resolutions each year are linked to exercise, diet or giving up something that is bad for you. It would be great this year if our resolution focus was on someone else or something else. For example, becoming a volunteer, recycling your rubbish, growing some vegetables or planting a tree, smile more often (good for you and others!). Resolutions are easy to make and hard to keep but we should all try – I am going to step away from my computer more often and spend more time in the community (until the next wave of emails arrive that is!). Good luck with your resolutions and keep us posted with your successes. PA The BSQ Parents Association has delivered Christmas baskets to the maintenance team. We are very grateful for all their work, effort and excellent attitude when carrying out their work. Happy Holidays. Dates for your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars.
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update Happy New Year to all of our BSQ Community! We also welcome new students and their families to Primary and look forward to meeting you all soon. As we continue to learn online for the next few days, we want to thank you all for your resilience and participation in our Canvas conferences, including turning your cameras on, using the public chat to share your ideas and sharing your learning with your teachers. Thank you to all the students and parents who attend the extremely successful Christmas Bazaar just before the Christmas break. The students managed to raise $989.60 for the various charities we are supporting - a massive effort considering they only used recycled materials! All Primary students will remain online for this week and the beginning of next week, with a planned return to the campus on Tuesday 18th January. Please note that there will be no online sessions at 8am on Monday 17th January. From Wednesday 19th January, it is planned that we will have Enrichment at school, with each Wednesday from then being the same as the other days, with a finish time of 3:10pm (until the roadworks are completed). This gives us the opportunity for the students to join in with Enrichment activities on campus each Wednesday afternoon, experiencing a wide variety of activities to develop their skills and understanding. We look forward to lots of exciting learning in Term 3 across the whole Primary School and wish you and your families a rewarding 2022. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Y2A We have only been back at school for a few days, but the children in 2A have been working hard! In our science lessons, we have started to explore materials. We discussed the different materials that can be found in our homes and their uses, and the children went on a hunt to find as many different materials as possible. The children have also conducted an experiment to find out which materials absorb the most water. We will be doing a lot of experiments this term as we continue to explore the properties of materials. In literacy, we are learning about diaries. We have read some diary entries and the children discussed the language used in diaries, such as adjectives and time connectives. The children have written their own diary entries to tell you about what they did on our first day back at school. Well done, 2A, and keep up the good work! Ms Polly Hall, Y2A Teacher. Being BSQ – Secondary Update What a great shame that the end of term was scuppered, not by the obvious danger of COVID but the road chaos outside of the school. We are so lucky that we were able to enjoy the Christmas Bazaar and welcome parents onto the site finally and share some of the festivities before the deluge came. What a wonderful job the community projects did in raising so much money. Thank you also to the staff behind the organisation which was well led by Miss. Todd who coordinated it all to ensure that alongside the usual Christmassy fun there were some activities for the Secondary school to get involved in. Everyone was incredibly generous with their money and their time. If you did manage to attend, thank you so much for the support. It was a wonderful experience for all. Year 9 What an amazing second term we had at school, with the Bonfire and then the Christmas Bazaar and celebrations for 'Festivales De Quito' . It was a short but very busy term. It was lovely to welcome parents back on site this term and it was fun to see parents joining in with Ecuavolley and purchasing Christmas ornaments made by the students. Y9 and Brad and I would really like to thank the parents of the students for organizing our beautiful personalized Christmas decorations and cookies for everyone in the form. I am sure these ornaments were the pride of place on all of our Christmas Trees. I know mine was: This term was great as we were all back in school every day and able to move away from online learning. We were very happy to have welcomed a new student, Stefano, to our class as well. The students have also been allowed to play football at lunchtime (masked of course), and it was amazing to see such talent in the students as they play, while the other students are supporting them from the side lines. As form tutors, Mr Edwards and I are so proud of the effort the form is putting into their learning. They have been working hard to achieve as many house points as possible. Well done to Julian and Maya for scoring over 100 house points so far, and as a group, we have achieved over 1400 positive house points which really is a fantastic achievement. Especially as nearly 400 of them were earnt in the last few weeks of term! In form time, we have been reflecting on the year gone by, appreciating each other and what we have while looking forward to 2022. A few of the students have written some words about their experiences. I have been really proud of myself for how I did not give up during my two years of online learning due to coronavirus, but during the quarantine, I had lost a lot of my learning skills. I was being so aware of trying to pass my final exams and the year, and the only thing I just said I'm really proud of myself because during the two tears of online learning I really tried hard thinking about my future, thinking about my family especially my parents how they are going to be so proud of me knowing that I work really hard for my future. Probably I can't be the best student, not having great grades, studying all night and day but even though not getting the grade that you were expecting, but for me, it's not everything about the grades, it's about my attitude, my enthusiasm, my effort in school. I'm really proud that I developed my English in this school. I'm really proud that everything that happens, no matter what, will not make me give up. (Naomi, Y9) I am proud of the work and grade that I got in Maths. My resolution would be to improve at every other subject as much as possible (Ivan, Y9) This term I enjoyed playing sports during break and lunch and having fun with my friends, as a new year's resolution is that if hopefully there's a football team I must be in the team. (Elias, Y9) This whole covid situation has been confusing but we have learned to live with it. Going back to school has been a great decision in a way because people including myself can concentrate better than online classes and can get more help. It has also helped us reconnect with our classmates. My new year's resolution is to achieve all that I can, challenge myself, and just to have fun and live the life I want because these past months I've realized how time passes so quickly and we have to enjoy it. (Kat, Y9) Mrs. Rachael Parkinson, Y9 Tutor First week back update from Mr Moors It is lovely to be back and welcoming students into lessons albeit online for the first few days. This is an important safety net as we have all been traveling and mixing with wider families and friends. It really does seem to be a challenge out there in the world. I have been really pleased with the attendance and involvement in lessons this week as it would be very easy to defer to a delayed return. It is clear that students are keen to get back to normal and embrace learning with their teachers. Year 11 students have their mocks exams starting soon. Year 10 and 12 will also sit Quimestre exams. It is an important time for revision and preparation as these grades not only set a level of attainment for students but also act as a catalyst that drives intervention over the coming months. Year 11 have had their timetable collapsed for the fortnight to allow the exams to take place. This means that when not sitting their exams they should be revising independently or taking the opportunity to catch up on a few things. Their teachers of course are delivering the invigilation at this time. Once exams are finished and we have the data outcomes for each subject, parents of students in years 11 and 13 will be invited in to meet teachers in a conference to discuss exam performance in each subject and also look at what we need to do to improve progress towards the main event in May. I will write to you all next week to inform you about this process and when (and possibly where) it will be taking place. This week sees the launch of the new values program being led by Miss Todd. The main focus is designed to develop the 6 BSQ values which are welcome, care, happiness, determination, ambition, and respect, whilst also developing general skills such as the ability to be reflective. Leadership develops confidence and maturity and the process can quickly develop wider positive attributes for adult life. Miss Todd and I will be looking at developing opportunities for students in the next academic year. This will be an exciting addition to our wider curriculum and also present our older students with opportunities to stand out, accept responsibility, and accountability for younger students and processes, and in the process act as role models for younger children to aspire to be like them in the future. Year 12 will have their metal tested towards the end of this academic year and from this and other factors we will decide upon key school leaders in 2022/2023. Finally, I would like to thank you again for the support, flexibility and understanding with all that we are trying to achieve under the current circumstances. It has perhaps been less consistent with the road issues but we have to roll with the challenges and do the best we can. We have an extremely talented set of staff who always go the extra distance to get done what is needed. This is often with trust and without question. Put this with our super students and your support we will surely look forward to a very prosperous few months ahead. Have a wonderful week everyone. Lee Moors
