BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, Let me begin with a huge thank you to the cast of the Year 6 Greek Mythology and the Secondary Sound of Music plays. Both groups gave it their all and the wonderful performances were a testament to the hard work and determination of the cast. A huge thank you also goes to Ms. Maria Fernanda and Mr. Santiago for all of their hard work in organising the event, which has taken lots of effort over many months. I want to give a huge thank you to all the parents attending parent teacher conferences today. It is always a pleasure for the academic team to discuss your child’s progress with you and to continue to strengthen our home-school partnership. We understand there has been frustration with a lack of trips and sports fixtures due to the current state of exception. This has also been a challenging time for us, and we share those frustrations. However, the Ministry of education is now relaxing the guidelines around trips and fixtures, and we are beginning to plan these for the next term. Mr. Fernando is liaising with other schools to determine some upcoming fixtures and year groups are planning or considering tripos for the coming term too. This Thursday, March 28th, we are having a non-uniform day in primary with children invited to dress up as their favourite movie character. This is an optional event but those dressed up are asked to pay $1 for participating, with funds being raised for primary school council initiatives. There will also be a bake sale during first break with students encouraged to bring another dollar to buy a treat should they wish. I would like to reinforce the timings of the school day as we are unfortunately receiving several students late in the morning and several students are also with us late in the afternoon. The drive-through opens at 7.40am and students should be dropped off at school by 8am at the latest. In the afternoon, the drive-through opens at 3.15pm and students should be collected by 3.40pm at the very latest. We appreciate your support in this matter. Please recall that this Thursday, March 28th, is a half day for students with classes ending at 12pm. This day marks the start of our spring break with students returning to school on Monday April 8th. I wish you all a wonderful break. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 3B Year 3B has been having fun and getting dirty with lots of hands-on science activities this term. After learning how different types of rocks are formed, they performed a number of tests on different samples to determine permeability, hardness and density. They also used magnifying glasses and their keen observation skills to help group the samples according to their characteristics. We then turned our attention to soils and learned how different soils come from different types of rocks. Soil samples were taken from different locations and we examined them closely, noting differences in their appearance, what they felt like and what we found in them. Everybody enjoyed having some wiggly worms visit the classroom! We have also been learning all about Ancient Egypt. So, we took a break from learning all about rocks to investigate how mummification works. At the beginning of term we mummified tomatoes by scooping out the seeds and covering them in a salt and bicarbonate soda mixture. It was very exciting (and a little bit smelly) when we finally opened the jars on Monday to observe the results. Kind regards Elise BSQ – Secondary Dear Parents, I want to start expressing my heartfelt gratitude for your support and participation in our recent musical adaptation of "The Sound of Music." It was truly heartwarming to see so many of you in attendance, cheering on our talented students from Secondary. Last Friday's performance was nothing short of spectacular. Our students showcased their incredible talent and hard work, leaving the audience mesmerized and earning a well-deserved standing ovation. I would like to extend a special thank you to Ms. Fernanda Espinosa and Mr. Santiago Herrera for their dedication and guidance throughout this amazing journey. Their efforts have truly made a difference in our students' lives. Additionally, I want to acknowledge Mrs. Lucia Palomeque for her exceptional artistry, which added another layer of beauty to the entire production. Your contributions are deeply appreciated. I would also like to thank all the parents who took the opportunity to meet with teachers during the Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday. Your involvement and collaboration are invaluable in ensuring the success of our students. As a reminder, this Thursday will be a half day, with students leaving campus at 12:00 p.m. to begin a well-deserved vacation period. Classes will resume on Monday, April 8th. Once again, thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to our school community. I look forward to seeing our students return refreshed and ready for the next phase of learning and growth. Warm regards, Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Science week ´8th-17th March was British Science week, with the theme of Time to celebrate it's 30 year anniversary. We celebrated this event in Secondary with two days of activities for the students, and a poster competition which spanned the week. During the two days students had to design a space shuttle which would carry an egg. Working in teams they had to build a prototype, then explain why they had chosen this design, including costings. This culminated on Friday where they had to test their prototypes. There were many innovative designs and the students worked brilliantly together across the year groups, showcasing great team work. The furthest to fly without the egg breaking won. Well done to Cayambe who got first and second place, then Iliniza in third. A definite highlight was the enthusiasm from Josefa Contreras Muños (Year 9) about her space shuttle design. Usually a quiet and fairly shy student, Josefa stood in front of the whole of secondary school and explained her design. Well done Josefa!!! The winners of the poster competition will be announced after the Easter break.
Nadine Parker

Y8 Students Reflect on the Continents in 150 Years Dear parents, teachers, and students, We are thrilled to present you with a glimpse into the future through the imagination and curiosity of our eighth-grade students! In their recent geography class, they were challenged to imagine what the continents will look like in the next 150 years. Their theories and visions have left us amazed and deeply reflective about the fate of our planet. From the emergence of new lands to radical changes in topography, these young visionaries have shared their ideas with enthusiasm and creativity. Here are some of the most fascinating theories that have emerged: 1. Floating Technology Continent: Some students have speculated about the emergence of a completely new continent, formed by technological waste and synthetic materials. They envision a place where innovation and technology are the main features, with floating cities and renewable resources like solar and wind energy. 2. Fused Continents: Other students have predicted that the current continents will merge due to climate change and tectonic activity. They visualize a world where Asia and America unite, forming a supercontinent that will transform global geography and geopolitics. 3. Green Continent: Some optimistic students have imagined a future where nature regains control. They see a continent covered in lush tropical jungles and vast grasslands, where biodiversity flourishes, and sustainability is the priority. These theories are not just products of imagination but also reflect our students' awareness and concern for the environment and the future of our planet. They remind us of the importance of addressing current environmental challenges and working together to create a sustainable and prosperous future. As an educational community, we are inspired by the creativity and critical thinking of our students. We hope that these reflections on the future of the continents will motivate us all to take action to preserve and protect our beautiful planet Earth. Let's continue exploring together towards a promising future! Best regards, Year 8 PlayCPR SessionsDuring the science week at BSQ, students had a training session on how to do effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The session was led by the school doctor Dr. Elizabeth Mbata, who taught the students how to identify signs of a cardiac arrest and when and how to carry out an effective CPR thereby saving a life. Studies show that 3.8 million people suffer a cardiac arrest outside the hospital globally, and only 8 to 12% of these people survive, so for us at BSQ, it is important to train our students on how to effectively do a CPR. Our Community Congratulations to Isabella from Y10 for her outstanding achievement! Obtaining third place in the National Ranking of Equestrian Jumping, in category B, is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication she possesses. Your hard work has paid off, and it is an honour to see you shine in this way. Your passion and effort are inspiring to us all. We sincerely congratulate you and wish you many more accomplishments in the future. May this be just the beginning of a journey filled with success and fulfilment! We are very proud of you, Isabella. Congratulations! Students from BSQ showcased their talents in a thrilling rock climbing competition. Among them, Clemente from Year 2 stood out by securing an impressive 2nd place in his age group. Equally remarkable was Felix from Year 3, who clinched the top spot in his age category. Their dedication and skill deserve applause, reflecting the spirit of excellence fostered at BSQ. Last weekend, Carlos Alberto from Y6 competed in a fencing tournament and won the gold medal. Congratulations to Carlos on his impressive achievement!

I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Dear BSQ community, Year 4A students have been studying the Civil Right's movement for the past term. We explored what 'segregation' meant and how different individuals such as Rosa Parks or Dr Martin Luther King Jr changed the way that racial differences were and are still perceived now. Students had the opportunity to explore racial discrimination around the world and developed their own ideas and opinions regarding what the future should look like. We studied Dr Martin Luther Kings Jr's speech 'I have a dream' and students were inspired to write their own versions. Have a look at our 4A dream... "I have a dream that one day black and white children can hold hands. I have a dream that the world has only good people. I have a dream that black and white people can be good friends. I have a dream that we have a better world with black and white people together. I have a dream that there is no more racism. I have a dream that black and white people can stay together. I have a dream that white and black people can play, eat, talk and work together. I have a dream that black and white people can have the same rights. I have a dream to change the world. I have a dream that no one fights. I have a dream that there is equality all over the world. I have a dream that there are no more racist people. I have a dream that we all have the same rights. I have a dream that people understand that God created us all equal." We encourage all the members of our community to think of your dream world and most importantly, act accordingly in order to make your dream come true. It's all in our hands! As you can see below, Year 4 students designed and painted their own mural outside our classrooms, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement. With the support of Mr Watts and Ms Hutchinson the result was wonderful! Ms. Vasilokonstantaki BSQ – Secondary We are thrilled to share the resounding success of our recent art exhibitions and musical presentation, showcasing the extraordinary talents of our students here at BSQ! Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness the magic unfold before your eyes. We can't wait to see you there! Book RecipeWe are excited to announce that the recipe book, which has been created in partnership between The British School Quito and the World Food Programme, with great thanks to all the families involved who shared their recipes, is currently being printed! This collection of recipes comes from the families of the school, who derive from a range of backgrounds and cultures. There is a diverse selection of snacks, mains and desserts which are not only nutritious but have also been chosen based on the level of sustainability. By purchasing the book you will be providing funds for the World Food Programme’s feeding program. All money goes directly to the WFP Schools Feeding Program, straight to the schools and children that need it most. In 2023, 1,135 school children in Ecuador’s rural schools were supported by the WFP. In 2024, WFP is expanding the program to further rural provinces within Ecuador. There are approximately 1 million students in rural schools in Ecuador which, with further funding, WFP has the potential to reach. Through the school feeding program, smallholder farmers provide fresh and nutritious ingredients to make the school meals. Ecuador has a 27% rate of chronic childhood malnutrition, the second-highest in Latin America and the Caribbean. This rate is 30% in rural areas for children under 2. Only 52% of households in Ecuador have affordable access to a diet of energy, protein, fat and micronutrients. Every $1 invested in school feeding has a US$9 return on investment for Ecuador. 1 hardback book purchased provides approximately 50 school meals - $30 1 ebook purchased provides approximately 30 school meals - $20 This collaboration of the British School Quito with the World Food Programme will hopefully be the first of many and the financial support from buying the book will make a huge difference to the people of Ecuador and the country as a whole. WFP representative will be present during the Primary swimming gala on Saturday 16th March to share more information and answer questions.
