BSQ – PrimaryDear BSQ Community, Last week saw a quiet and settled week in the primary school, though there were some events of note. Year 1 enjoyed a trip to Quito airport, helping them to understand the logistics of the airport and they even met the wonderful firefighting team. The trip helped to develop their knowledge and understanding of their current topic of transport. Year 4 also enjoyed a trip to the Hilacril clothes factory. They were able to explore sustainable clothes manufacturing and to speak to the workers to better understand their working conditions. This is all linked to their topic of ‘fast fashion.’ Last week also saw House Events for all students where house spirit was high and the colours of Antisana, Cayambe and Illiniza were proudly worn! All year groups are well underway in their sustainable projects now, with Year 6 thinking about healthy and sustainable food options; Year 5 designing and making chairs from sustainable materials; Year 4 questioning fast fashion and its pace in our world; Year 3 are learning about sustainable footwear; Year 2 are learning about sustainable toys; Year 1 are exploring sustainable cities and transport, and finally Early Years are learning how to reduce, re-use and recycle. Whilst our regular curriculum continues, having a focus on sustainability is truly inspiring our students to consider how they can become change makers in our world. Finally, please recall that this Saturday (May 18th) is our Family Fun Day from 10am – 2pm. Lots of fun, games and terrific food will be on offer, we look forward to seeing you there! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Nursery This term our enthusiastic Nursery students have had lots of fun exploring and learning about the world we live in! Our young learners have been fully engaged as we investigated what we need for plants to grow… we even created our very own ‘Sprout House’ so to closely observe our germinating seeds and practice our English speaking skills to identify different plant parts. It was an amazing effort by everyone as we discussed what our seeds would need to grow, before independently creating our ‘Sprout Houses’ by counting out five seeds and placing them in water soaked cotton balls. We then secured our zip lock bags and hung them from our classroom window so our observations towards germination could begin. Moreover, we had lots of fun participating in ‘World Book Day’ this term and it certainly did not take much convincing for us all to come to school dressed up as our favourite book character. Such a wonderful celebration that provided many opportunities to cultivate further our students love for connecting with stories. Not only did we dress-up and explore books - we also performed an action poem for our Reception friends about a little seed that grew into a big, beautiful tree! Not to mention creating our very own ‘Hungry Caterpillars’ through experimenting with water absorption. Reading, dressing-up, performing and experimenting – World Book Day celebrations was a fuse of fun in Nursery… as always! Gerry Coiro BSQ – Secondary What an incredible week it has been for our community! We're thrilled to announce that our residential trip to Cuenca for Year 10 and Year 12 is this week. It promises to be an enriching experience filled with adventure and learning. But that's not all! Let's not forget about our upcoming Family Fun Day this Saturday. It's a chance for everyone to come together, enjoy some quality time, and create lasting memories. Don't miss out on the excitement - be sure to purchase your tickets for the raffle and get a chance to win some fantastic prizes. See you there! Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary In Secondary we celebrated Green Week from 8th-11th April. In Monday’s LLS lesson students coloured butterflies that could camouflage into their surroundings. Enjoy finding them in some of the images below. On Wednesday we had 4 amazing guest speakers present to the students. Melissa Everett and Alyssa Rivera from Sustainable Hudson Valley New York, USA. https://www.sustainhv.org/ Melissa focuses on local communities and reducing carbon footprints on a local level in the Hudson Valley. After studying as a journalist she became interested in the environment and what could be done to maintain it. Setting up the ‘Sustainable Hudson Valley’ and implementing change in her community. Alyssa studied Sustainability Management and joined the Sustainable Hudson Valley supporting their organisation and outreach programme. Beth Huggins from Regeneration Field Institude, Manabi, Ecuador. https://www.regenerationfieldinstitute.com/ Beth’s aim is to empower the local and international community to conduct socially and ecologically regenerative work through education on the land they are determined to reforest. With Ecuador being so ecologically diverse but the primary forests being deforested action needed to be taken, and by educating local farmers on regenerative farming techniques it and students from around the world on how they can afforest has enabled animals to be restored to the forests. Lorre Maldonado Composting and educating in the local area. Lorre realised during the pandemic that isolated communities that farmed monocrops were unable to get the range of food they required to survive. She then worked with local farmers to create diverse crops with a range of produce that the community could consume without the need for trade, but questioned the use of harsh chemicals in the pesticides and herbicides. Working with people in the city she organised the collection of compost bins to generate nutrient rich soil to support the growth of the crops. Starting with a small group of friends this has since expanded. She is reducing household waste and the amount of methane produced in landfill. Thursday was a no electricity day where staff got creative in their lessons to deliver interesting and exciting work which didn’t rely on technology. Which has helped prepare us for these times where electricity shortages have presented themselves. Students in year 10 spent their English lesson analysing the poem ‘Tell Them’ by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, and year 7 looked at UN Climate Summit Poem ‘Dear Matafele Peinem’ by Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner then wrote their own poems shown below. If you have any questions about sustainability at BSQ or would like to learn more about the restoration of the forests of Ecuador or the composting collection scheme or the other sustainability projects in the school, please feel free to contact.
