Thought for the week; June 5th World Environment Day “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Robert Swan As we return from our extended weekend break and enter the month of June let’s look ahead and start thinking about the future. For our Year 13’s, they start their ‘Futures Curriculum’ this week as they start looking and planning for their lives beyond BSQ. Year 6 is preparing for transition week when they look to life and learning in secondary school, and of course, at all other levels within the school, plans are underway for ending one year and preparing for another. Our sustainability teams are working on plans for a sustainability leaders panel symposium later this month, and of course, next Monday is World Environment Day. So, time to think ahead, what will you do as a family next weekend to contribute to the sustainability of our planet? Send us your photos and let’s see if we can have a gallery of activities for next Monday. Have a great week everyone. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary May 29th: Futures Curriculum – Year 13 June 5th: World Environment Day – send us your photos of family action and initiative June 8th: Primary Sports Day June 12th: Transition Week - Year 6 June 21-23: Huasquila Lodge - Year 6 Residential June 28th: Transition assembly and end of primary party - Year 6 June 29th: Annual Awards Ceremonies June 30th: Graduation Ceremony – Year 13 David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful, long weekend. This week sees us enter the month of June, a month that is always very busy in international schools around the world. This month sees all of primary involved in sports day on June 8th and the Year 6 students complete transition week (week commencing June 12th), preparing them for life in the secondary school. They will also head to Hasquila Lodge near Tena for their residential (21st – 23rd June) and finally will perform their end of primary assembly on June 28th. A busy time for Year 6 indeed! On June 29th ,we will host our annual awards day, beginning with Early Years ceremony, followed by the Primary ceremony and finally the Secondary ceremony. On this day, a host of awards will be given out to students for showing the school values and for their achievement in different curriculum subjects. More details will follow with regards to timings in the coming weeks. As we approach the end of the year, we are also working on classes for next academic year and are finalising the teachers and assistant teachers for each year group. This information will be shared in the coming weeks, before the end of the academic year. I hope that this information keeps you up to date with the busy month ahead as we approach the summer break. This time is always one filled with fun and enjoyment, we are looking forward to seeing how the next weeks unfold. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Reception B Term 3 started a few weeks ago, but we are still feeling the excitement around the Reception classes. The kids had a great time talking, reading, and learning about Dinosaurs. In Art class the children enjoyed applying the collage technique to make their own Dino Masks. After, we displayed all the work in our new “Wall of Pride” for Early Years, where our little artists can show their creativity and skills. We are also very excited with the opening of Mini City which has contributed to the learning and practicing of English functional language amongst all EFYS students. Children can dress up as their favorite real-world character and role play as doctors, pilots, restaurant costumers, and many others. In mid-May, the reception classes invited mums and dads for a Mother's Day celebration. The children were very happy learning a lovely poem and preparing their crafts for mum. We continued with the Mythical Creatures theme, where boys and girls found an opportunity to make clear differentiation between real creatures and imaginary ones. In Literacy, Jack and the Beanstalk created a great opportunity for collaborative work to put together our class display on the theme. During Continuous Provision, the children were very excited looking at their own bean seeds sprout and grow to finally plant them into containers. Now, we are moving into the world of pirates looking for more learning adventures! In PSED (Personal Social Emotional Development) this term, we are focusing on three values: Be Kind, Be Safe and Be Responsible. We also started the Final House Race – Challenge to support the class values. Finally, we gladly received Miss Lizzy who is contributing significantly to the English teaching and practice as our EAL Specialist. Ms. Balseca BSQ – Secondary 26 May 2023 A very short week and unusually quiet with three year groups out of school. We will be back to full strength again next week with Year 11 enjoying an extended essay and theory of knowledge experience to give them a head start into studies next year at IB. Year 8 will be back from their trip to Puerto Lopez which I understand from Sophie Davilla was a huge success. She reported that it was one of the best experiences she has had to date. I am really pleased to hear about all of the positive experiences and enthusiasm from the students who have made the effort to take part in all of the residential events this year. The intention last year when we were designing the programme was to provide our students with an educational adventure themes on sustainability experiences that would provide life long memories. Holidays these are not. Everyone who takes part experiences leadership and difficulty in a setting that only Ecuador can offer. The 7 events we have delivered over the secondary journey allow our students to explore all of the diverse environments that the country offers. These experiences really are world class, the envy of schools in Europe with only the elite experiencing what Latin America can offer with the costs of getting here. To be able to do this on our doorstep is a fantastic opportunity and one that all should embrace. You will be pleased to hear that we are now securing dates for the coming year and Mr Tabango and Mr Jones will be meeting with the providers at Camps and CEIBO to reflect on the year gone and how we can enhance things further into the future. I hope that all students are working hard revising at home in addition to the activity in school with exams this week and next. The timetables are detailed in the last newsletter along with the links to revision advice. Please do encourage your son or daughter to put some time into this in the evening and ask to see the timetable and what activities they are doing to prepare. I wish them all the very best of luck. The end of year is fast looming being only4 weeks away! Where has the year gone? Our attention is starting to turn to celebrations and specifically the awards ceremony on the 29th June and the Graduation on the 30th. It is an exciting time of year allowing us to celebrate and give credit to those who have achieved so much academically and in many other ways. I am looking forward to giving thanks to our heads of school who have served student voice so successfully this year and to give them the opportunity to present the appointments to the next cohort taking over. We also have 2 COBIS Awards this year. These were a result of nominations from the school and we are very excited to have been awarded the certificates to two very deserving students. These will be presented at the award ceremony on the 29th. I am also looking forward to seeing the Duke of Edinburgh International Awards being presented to those students who have completed their awards this year. This is a huge commitment and something that could see them attending the Palace in London with the Duke of Edinburgh himself if they get to the Gold Level. Mrs Davilla is really excite to be setting off a few students on the Gold Award who achieved Silver this year. This is a first at BSQ and is testament to the hard work and leadership of the team at the school. Well done all! Lee Moors Head of Secondary Field Trip From the 9th-11th May all of Year 12 travelled to Mindo to complete some very important field work for their IB studies. For the Science students, they were involved in working collaboratively to collect data for their group 4 project. They have some very egxciting research questions, such as how does light intensity affect the type of chlorophyll in plants. We are really looking forward to them presenting this information on the 16th June. Biologists were involved in collecting data along a transect to see how succession takes place from the rivers edge out into the grassland. They also had the opportunity to take samples from the river and measure the biotic index to see how pollution can affect the biodiversity of invertebrates. The opportunity for them to complete field work is invaluable for the Biology IB exam. They learned essential data analysis skills, as well as how to sample an ecosystem accurately. Geographers undertook data collection for their Internal Assessments, worth between 20-25% of their final grade. They measured different aspects of the river, based on the Bradshaw model, how the river changes along its course. Looking at the width, depth, gradient, velocity, bedload size and shape. They appreciated the help from their peers in collecting the data and had a fantastic time whilst doing it. Mrs. Parker and Miss. Sawyers Duke of Edinburgh This week our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students presented their final purpose projects to an audience of special guests. Group 2 started us off with a Kardashian's style video diary which had us all laughing. This was a fantastically editors' video with fun moment along with real life emotions along their journey. Group 1 then started off with the presentation of a t-shirt designed by them and covered in beautiful images of the flora found in Pululahua. The group also spent a lot of time designing and creating a board game with the information they learnt about the plants. The level of serial in this game was outstanding. You needed different elements to get your plants down on the board and special bee cards were drawn to protect the plants. Finally, group 3 presented a climate related project which focuses on the effects of climate within the crater. For instance, dry conditions resulted in cracking ground. Cloud formations in the afternoon were a result of the moisture from the forest lower down the valley and the strong winds which occurred at night just add to the unexpected climate variations. We were exceptionally impressed with the team effort made and celebrated with some tea, coffee and cake for the students. A huge congratulations to our Bronze 2023 group! Now to finish their hours!! Ms. Dávila Extracurricular Activities First and foremost, I would like to commend all our students for their dedication and hard work. Each day, we witness remarkable growth and improvement in their abilities, which is a testament to their commitment and enthusiasm. In our Karate program, our students are on the verge of reaching an important milestone as they prepare for the highly anticipated belt colour-changing ceremony. The art side of the extracurricular activities: KIRU, Drawing & Coloring, Arts & Crafts, and Pottery classes have been enhancing our students' fine and gross motor skills. In our Football and CrossFit programs, students are not only enjoying themselves but also reaping the benefits of an active lifestyle. ¡Muchas felicidades a nuestro grupo Bronce 2023!
Mr. Oscar Tabango
