Thought for the week; “Beauty exists not in what is seen and remembered, but in what is felt and never forgotten.” Johnathan Jena It was wonderful to see so many members of our community together this past Saturday enjoying the opportunity to get to know one another just that little bit better. This was just the first of many community events that we hope you will join us for. Remembering: Last week saw students across the school celebrating and remembering the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. And of course, on Monday we took the time to reflect and show our respects on the day of the Queen’s State Funeral. From left to right: Andres Robalino, Executive Director of the BSQ foundation signing the official book of commemoration at the British Embassy. Flags at half-mast at BSQ. Primary students at BSQ’s remembrance wall. David Jones, Principal, signing on behalf of the BSQ community at the British Embassy. This week the school will be hosting its first University Fair with the organisation U for You. On Thursday the 22nd we will have representatives from some of the top British universities here at school. This will be a great chance for our students to start planning ahead and thinking about career courses in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. We will also be busy preparing for our Flag Ceremony event on Monday the 26th of September. This year for the first time we will be accompanied by a full, traditional marching band. Staff will also be working hard to prepare the school to receive international guests. On Monday the 26th we will be joined by Jonathan Dey, Orbital’s Regional Schools Officer, who will be flying in from Manchester to visit us until Thursday. And, on Tuesday the 27th we will be joined by Chris Durbin and Scott Huyler from the Council of International Schools (CIS). Chris and Scott are independent school assessors who will be providing an external opinion on the quality of education provided by the British School. We hope you will join us in making them feel very welcome. Principal BSQ – Primary It was wonderful to see so many of you at the picnic on Saturday. Once again, I am incredibly impressed by the wonderful unitedness of the BSQ community and it was a fantastic opportunity to chat with so many of you. The canteen provision has now returned to self-service and the feedback from both students are parents has been very positive. Additionally, the new menu has been approved by a nutritionist so not only is the food delicious, you can be assured that it is healthy too. The new primary school council will be formed and will meet for the first time this week. We are excited to hear their views and for them to get started with some exciting projects across the primary school, including planning for a World Food Day celebration in October. Speaking of celebrations, primary students from Years 2 – 6 will also be attending the Juramento a la Bandera celebration at school next Monday. Finally, thank you all again for your kind messages and condolences upon the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Across the school on Friday, students participated in activities that enabled them to pay their respects and understand the life of the Queen, which was very touching. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary It has been a hugely constructive week to this point, and it is incredible to think that we are almost 6 weeks in already. At this stage staff and students are settled in their learning relationships and the teachers are now looking at assessment for the first data point. Each student at BSQ sits a Cognitive ability test (CAT4) at the start of each phase. This is a formal assessment of their academic ability across 4 different areas. What this gives us is an idea at what level they should be working to so that we can ensure that everyone is making at least expected progress. As always at BSQ we set the bar higher with each student set to a challenge target as we need to take them slightly beyond academic potential. Year 7, 10, and year 12 are sitting these tests over this week. The outcomes of this will be on your first report that is due at the end of October. There will also be a reminder for you all about our processes that will be released nearer the time. You will see where your son or daughter sits regarding their attainment in each subject against their target. Staff are also considering the effort that students are putting into their learning. This will be assessed as 5 being the highest to 1 being the lowest. We consider their application, homework and organisation and contribution in lessons. Again, this will be in each subject so we get a clear picture of where support may be needed. It also gives us an average grade to tell you how students are approaching learning generally at school this year. It is perhaps therefore a good time for students to really impress to get the highest marks possible. Last year we were looking at changing the way we deliver parent teacher conferences but now we are ‘back to normal’ we will revert to previous practices of PTC days on site to allow parents to come and see al. teachers. The first is approaching for year 7 as we consider their start and how they have settled. I know that these can be disruptive to learning but they are important to allow parents access to work and personal conversations with those responsible for learning. I will circulate the new plans in due course. It has been a very sad week for the staff and students with the impact of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On Monday we had some time as a staff to focus on the state funeral and be involved with the significant moment in history unfolding at home in the UK. It was important on Friday to reflect on this whole event and the passing of Her Majesty with some contextual activity for the children. It really is a significant moment in history not just for the UK but for the world. I would like to thank the students who spoke to me personally and to you all in our community for the understanding so that we could spend a moment of reflection as we witness the funeral and connected activity on Monday. Finally, we look forward to our first two residential events of the year. There has been a huge amount of work in the background to ensure that everything is right for the events and that you have the correct information as parents before departure. Year 9 are first up with their trip to the Northern Highlands from the 27th – 30th September and then Year 7 who are going to the Jungle from the 3rd to the 6th October. Parents, please engage with the paperwork sent to you and ensure that you have made payments to CEIBO in line with their timescales. It would be hugely disappointing if your son or daughter missed out on what is going to be a wonderful experience. Year 7 parents will be invited to a presentation by the company facilitating their event in the next week or so. Mr. Tabango is arranging this and we will inform you on the details very soon. Year 12 students are facing new challenges as they start the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. In these first weeks, students have been experiencing what it means to be a student with an open mind, because in each subject of the Programme, teachers must develop abilities and skills that will allow them to be students capable of facing different situations and able to seek solutions. In the tutoring periods and in LLS we have dealt with topics of great interest according to their age and interests, topics such as self-esteem, helping classmates and empathy among them, it is important to highlight the good attitude of the students, since it allows ideas are presented with a high degree of respect. In addition, it is important to highlight that, in the first five minutes of the tutor, one or another idea or concern that the students may have is discussed or exchanged. Welcome to the Diploma Programme and enjoy this new adventure!!! We are grateful to all members of the BSQ community for their kind words of support at this time of national mourning for the British community. It has been truly touching to receive condolences from students and parents on the loss of such an important international figurehead as Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, someone who was so dear to many of our nation’s hearts. This extension of respect and empathy is a true testament to the values of our community. David Jones Principal BSQ – PrimaryFirstly, let me thank you all again for your attendance at out ´Meet the Teacher´ days last week. We were incredibly impressed by the attendance on the days. It was wonderful to see parents connecting or re-connecting with the school campus and being able to see the learning, laughter and joy that we have the privilege to see every day. We look forward to welcoming you to the school campus many more times throughout the school year including at our upcoming community picnic on Saturday September 17th. Last week also saw the first house event of the school year. Years 3 to 6 spent some time creating art work based on the mountains that their houses are named after, whilst Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2 wowed us all with their wonderful dancing. The house spirit is definitely back up and running at BSQ! We now look forward to a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary This week sees student vice coming to the forefront of our attention with the announcement of the hustings and voting process in year groups. It was fantastic to see so many students engaged with this and who have so enthusiastically made cases for appointment to the prestigious roles. I had great pleasure last week of also introducing our new Student Leadership Team. These are outstanding students in year 13 who have been specially selected to represent the whole student body. These appointments hold significant standing in the school and their work and presence will exemplify all that BSQ hold crucial for our student development model. They are team players, excellent communicators, they have outstanding leadership qualities, and they provide us with role models for our younger children. I am very pleased to announce again the following appointments: Student Head of School – Anabella De Armas Student Deputy Head of School – Samantha Baugh Student Assistant Heads of School – Gael Andre Oña Larco Agostina Tagarot Antonella Sánchez Obando On Friday they were formally involved with the Year 7 Tie ceremony being front of house welcoming parents and year 7 into the school at their first event. Anabella and Samantha represented the student body by speaking to year 7 and their parents, welcoming, giving advice, and outlining the exciting times ahead. Well done also to the year 7 themselves. Finally, now formally welcomed into the Secondary school. It is also appropriate to give my sincere thanks to the parents for their support at the event. There were lots of proud parents and students at the event. My final thoughts this week are with my colleagues and the very sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Once again our students have made me incredibly proud by displaying great thought and consideration for the staff. I had a few students come to my office to enquire if I was ok with the sad news. This was not isolated with news that the same thoughts were extended to other staff. Our students showed great sensitivity and empathy and again this exemplifies the outstanding qualities our students possess. On behalf of the staff, thank you all for your concern. I am sure that there will be further announcements on how we as a school remember her service and leadership and also welcome the reign of King Charles III. Year 12 Biology over the last couple of weeks Jhonna and Federico. Year 12 have made an excellent start to their IB Biology studies. We have been learning all about cells, their origin and structures. To help with learning about the function of all of the organelles of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the classes did an 'organelle speed dating' activity where they had to go around the room and describe themselves to each other, including their structure and function. It was a great success, with a real buzz in the classroom and some excellent descriptive writing. Year 11 Cow Eye Dissection. Year 11 Biologists have started the year learning about coordination and response in mammals. This week they had the opportunity to learn all about the structure and function of the eye. This culminated with the activity of dissecting the cows eye. They were able to identify each structure and extract the lens of the eye to demonstrate it's magnification properties. Bien echo a Año 7. Nadine Parker
Lee Moors Director de Secundaria Thought for the week ‘The more you say the less people remember’ Francois Fenelon It has been a pleasure for us getting to know members of the community over the past couple of weeks and we hope to build even closer relationships over the coming months through different events and meetings. We are grateful to those of you who have sent in observations and suggestions and whenever possible we will try to take these on board when reviewing different areas of service provision. We are very pleased to announce that as of Monday face masks will no longer be obligatory. If students feel more secure wearing a facemask they may of course continue to do so. Thank you for supporting this campaign and for helping us to keep our community healthy. Finally, in the hope of improving readership, we will make an effort to keep our communications brief and to the point. It is important to us that you read the newsletter and keep up to date with events here at the school. So, without further ado I invite you to review the key points of our respective section heads. At the end of each year, we say goodbye to staff members and students who have spent time with us here at the school and whose thoughts and actions have been such an important part of who we are.
This year we say goodbye to a large group of staff, many of who made the commitment to stay here with us through the pandemic and beyond and have been such a critical part of our regrowth. I know I speak for the whole community when I say thank you for everything the staff team at BSQ have done for the school and its students and, of course, we will be saying special goodbyes to the team at the end of term.
In particular, I want to thank Marcus Madden. He was a breath of fresh air when he arrived at BSQ in August 2018 and has been a strong advocate for our values and a much appreciated colleague ever since. Marcus always puts his colleagues and his students first and works hard to ensure that everyone has what they need and can focus on their work or learning. As he moves with his family to his next position, I know we all wish him the best of luck and will miss him here at BSQ. Thank you, Marcus.
Thank you everyone.

Year 4 are currently learning about 'Fast Fashion'; what it is, how it is damaging our planet, and how people in the industry are not treated correctly.
On Thursday 9th June, Year 4 visited the Hilacril clothes factory, Tumbaco. The factory goes against what the world knows from 'fast fashion'. We were able to see how employees can be treated well; how clothes can be made in an eco-friendly manner; and, learn how clothes are actually made from the beginning process to the final end product.
After a busy morning learning all about the factory, we had time to play and finished the day with ice cream.
The students were all fantastic! The way they listened, moved around the factory and grounds, asked questions and generally conducted themselves was all great.
It was truly a fascinating trip, and we were very proud and impressed of how the Year 4 students acted throughout the day.
We would like to share with our BSQ community that José Sebastián, Year 5, participated in a National Enduro Tournament in Portoviejo and Manta on June 11th, where he obtained 2nd place under his category.

I am hugely proud of year 11 and 13 who have coped well with formal exams and assessment, and year 13 particularly who have navigated this and what comes next.
There is of course change coming with students and staff leaving and arriving. It is important to tell you how excited I am to welcome the new staff who are coming. In my position I have the privilege of being able to be part of the process of selecting them for the school. I am confident in reassuring you how enthusiastic they all are about being part of our wonderful school and community. We have been very careful to ensure that we have ongoing and excellent leadership joining the team to take us to the next steps. This is perhaps an opportunity to briefly introduce you to Ms Standley and Ms Sanchez Martin who will be taking leadership positions in the secondary school. Laura Standley is currently in the UK and is a Humanities Specialist. She is leading on curriculum in her current school with experience and success in staff leadership and adding innovation to academic curriculum design. Cecelia Sanchez Martin is extremely experienced having worked in the UK as a Mathematics specialist and the Middle East. Cecelia is Bilingual and is currently leading pastoral provision in challenging circumstances where she has excelled. Both will add a great deal to the team, and I am looking forward very much to working with them in taking things forward.
I look forward to seeing you all at the graduation and award events over the next week.

On Monday our staff attended Climate Change education workshops led by our own in-house sustainability team. As part of our campaign to achieve the Bronze Award from Educcate, all our staff need to have a strong understanding of what Climate Change is and how we can work to mitigate against it
Finally, some updates on school plans moving forwards. In January all the parents completed the annual survey and the action plan that came from that is already in motion in many ways.
You can see the action plan here. As you can see, we have already begun the after school activity programme, there is a school musical taking place this term and I have already shared with you the plans for our new swimming pool and early learning area. This summer there will be work underway at BSQ to ensure that facilities are updated and students can enjoy them when they return in August.

The Year 4 trip to see a working garment factory opened our students' eyes to the inner workings of an ethical business right here in Ecuador, learning about the processes that create sustainable products and gaining knowledge that they will use to compare this type of business to others in the wider world. And our youngest students from Caterpillar class turned into Mythical Creatures for the day, sharing their consents and excitement around the campus (and in the process, learning more about the bigger school).
This week, we continue the transition process to the new classes and year groups, with Year 6 in particular experiencing a full week of Secondary activities. In most cases, the students have been able to meet or be introduced to their new teachers for next year - this will perhaps have raised some questions from them, so do encourage them to pass them onto their class teachers.
In the coming weeks, we also have the Key Stage One trip on Tuesday 14th June, Drama presentations between Monday 20th and Wednesday 22nd June and then the Key Stage Two trip on Thursday 23rd June.

Year 3 started their research project this term on famous Scientists, specifically looking at Chemists. On Monday we had the chance to be taught by Ms Todd from secondary science. We were taste testing different foods and talked about their sour or soapy taste. Once we had done this in the classroom, we moved to the science lab where we were able to carry out an experiment to see if these were acid or alkaline. Year 3 worked together carefully to add universal indicators and see the different colours of acidic and alkaline substances created. Ms Todd then ended our wonderful lesson by adding potassium to water and we saw how the metal produced a purple flame. This really captured the imaginations of the class and has inspired all to look at what our scientists are famous for.
Also, this week we celebrated the end of our work on famous artists. Year 3 have been looking at Ansel Adams and looking at what influenced him and his art. For the KS2 art exhibition we produced two pieces of art to display. One was a water colour picture inspired by Ansel Adams' love for National parks. We used a familiar image from Cotopaxi National Park as our inspirations. The class also created mixed media pieces using one of his famous photographs. The children layered water colours, magazine cuttings, charcoal and photos to create their pieces.

Year 12 will be put through their paces this week to test their leadership, teamwork, communication and their ability to problem solve. They are under the microscope amongst the fun as we are looking at who may be appointed to the new and prestigious positions on the Student Leadership Team for next year. Good luck to them all. Year 8 are finally out on their residential event which was supposed to happen as the Pandemic struck. I know that they are all looking forward to this and with the support and guidance of Ms Espinosa and Mr Newman they will all have an amazing experience. If that was not enough, we also have our silver D of E students who are away on their practice expedition which I am pleased to be part of. I am a strong believer in learning outside of the classroom where we all benefit from experiences away from the norm. I am looking forward to sharing lots of pictures next week.
In EAL in recent weeks, we´ve been reading and writing limericks which has meant exploring words that rhyme and using our humour and imagination to do so.
We have also been looking at the ´I wish + simple past´ structure to talk about what we and the animals in the images might wish for. What do you think these animals are wishing for?
Have a great week everyone.

![Picture](/uploads/1/2/1/5/121538951/published/newsletter-34-y6-3.jpg?1654367025)

Enhorabuena a Aitana, Oliver, Felipe y Annabella.
