Thought for the week; ‘Celebrate life in all its glory - challenge yourself to let the routine sing, and the new dance’. (Maximillian Degenerez) We sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed the Quito celebrations and that you are looking forward to our forthcoming Christmas events. Thank you for supporting the heavy machinery work on the 6th, our pool development was able to advance considerably and we are well on our way towards opening in the new year. Our staff were busy working on innovative curricular developments throughout the day. Just one main announcement for this week, please remember that our Christmas fair will take place this coming Saturday. Doors will open at 10.00am and we will have our traditional bazaar, Christmas games, festive songs, food and performances, as well as a book exchange to renew your home library. Also – join us at the fair for the grand opening of our new look Early Years area. Community Health: At this time of year, we have a lot of different seasonal health complications and we would like to kindly remind you of the protocols regarding students who have symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. The advice is simple; students showing symptoms should please stay home and rest. Once recovered they can be back on campus but they must wear masks until completely recovered. Please refer back to the email sent out in August to refresh your knowledge of protocols and best practices. In order to maintain our community as healthy as possible we depend on high standards of trust, responsibility, and communication from all members of our community. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Christmas Fair: Saturday 10th December: 10.00 am – 1.30 pm End of Term: Friday, 16th of December David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Now we are in December, spirits are high in the primary school for both the Fiestas de Quito celebrations that we all enjoyed over the weekend (more details to follow around celebrations in school this week) and for Christmas which is nearing ever closer. Ms. Maria Fernanda has been working hard in all classes in collaboration with the class teachers, busily preparing for the Christmas performance which takes place on Monday December 12th at 2pm, with all primary parents invited. Of course, before the performance, we also have the Christmas Bazaar on Saturday December 10th from 10 – 2. Here, you will get to watch the school choir perform and also have a sneak peak of the songs to be performed at the Christmas performance. Work has been underway for the last 2 weeks to rejuvenate the Early Years environment. The ´mini city´ has been transformed and classrooms are also being given attention in order to enable the best possible learning opportunities for our youngest learners. We look forward to the grand opening on the day of the Christmas Bazaar. Finally, a notice about uniform. Please ensure that students are wearing appropriate BSQ uniform including plain black shoes on regular uniform days and trainers on PE days. Have a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 3B Science This term 3B has been rocking science. These budding Geologists and Paleontologists have been discovering the secrets that rocks hold about our planet. They have classified rocks into natural and man-made, learned the 3 different rock types and how they are formed and performed an experiment to determine different properties. We also had a rock show, where we looked at everyone’s favorite rocks from home and tried to identify them. This week we turned our attention to fossils. We watched a video about how fossils are formed and labeled diagrams to explain how a dinosaur becomes a fossil. Next week we will have a go at making our own mold and cast to cement these ideas. Ms. Chamberlain – Year 3 BSQ – Secondary Secondary Newsletter December week 1 Well done year 13! We are at the business end of the first half of the year and year 13 are now at the end of their first week of mock exams. We are all very proud of them as they seem to be entering into the stresses of the time with a cheerfulness that we can all admire. They are organised and on time and they see to be taking the preparation seriously to maximise their outcomes. I have spent time this week meeting them all individually to discuss and find out what is needed for their university destinations. 8 of our students have been accepted onto courses at USFQ already by passing entrance tests and other needs. All must be congratulated as they have been awarded scholarships for their fees. The subjects include, Medicine, Law, Mechanical Engineering, and Publicity and Marketing. We also have a number of the top US and UK universities being targeted such as Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, MIT, Oxford and Manchester, and many other destinations in Latin America and Europe. There really are some exciting plans to look forward to. Once again our wonderful students in CAS and the student leadership team are entering into the Christmas period with gusto as they maximise the potential for fundraising and community projects. As usual we will be all involved in the drive to collect Christmas boxes for donation. We are all happily supporting Fundación Ammen, (46 children involved with therapy and special needs education, Fundación Caminitos de luz (160 – children and their education), and Niños de Maria (180 children from vulnerable conditions). Please do support this and ensure that we have the box back by Wednesday 14th December. Our Year 12 CAS students are planning a series of events around the theme of Fiestas de Quito over the coming week There will be a lunch time Ecuavoley tournament throughout the week, a Quarenta Tournament, a Balcones de Quito design competition on Wednesday 7th and a Bake sale on Friday the 9th with a red and blue theme to accent the school uniform to finish the fun. Good luck to everyone involved. Next week we will all enjoy the long weekend and this is being extended even further on Tuesday as we see the major part of the new pool construction completed. Everyone will be working at home on that day due to the noise and heavy machinery on site. This is with the exception of Years 11 and 13 who we have prioritised for teaching. They will be safely based in the IB centre for the day so that they do not miss any lessons. The staff will be completing some development activity for the school connected to the recent Council of International Schools accreditation process. You will also be aware of the parent information sessions we are running next week to give you more understanding on how we deal with strengthening interpersonal skills and communication between students, parents, and the key pastoral staff at the school. These matters can be extremely complicated to resolve with teenagers. We must always work as a team and give our love and support when things go wrong. Even for us as professionals this can be challenging, so being informed about processes and needs will be incredibly useful to us all in our community. The sessions are in school at 08.30 am on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week. You are all very welcome and we look forward to your support. These sessions are not necessarily about individual cases but a chance for you all to gain a greater understanding of how we deal with these very sensitive areas. Finally, this week has seen an unprecedented increase in sickness absence and it seems that this is mostly down to the prevalence of Influenza A which seems to be sweeping the region. Please consider the hygiene lessons we all learnt in the COVID pandemic. Often the most basic things are the most effective. Also please consider getting a Flu vaccine. Worldwide there is a significant increase of cases and we all need to take all possible precautions. Have a great week everyone Lee Moors Head of Secondary OUR COMMUNITYExcellent News for BSQ Dear BSQ community, it is always enriching to share the achievements of our students. As one of our school counselors I want to share with you the news that we received from USFQ, regarding university applicants. The university informed us that all 8 students who took their admissions exam passed the application process obtaining very good results. This is excellent news, and we are proud that the effort and ability of our students is achieving external recognition and enabling them to pursue their dreams. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to our teaching staff who provide our students with the tools that they need to succeed in life.
Thought for the week; "Not all dreamers are winners, but all winners are dreamers. Your dream is the key to your future." (Mark Gorman) Congratulations to our Year 13 students on their excellent Theory of Knowledge Exhibition which was held last Friday. It was a pleasure to host parents, students and special guests for this academic celebration. We wish them the best of luck with their forthcoming mock exams. Our swimming pool reconstruction is advancing rapidly, however we need your help and support. Up to now most of the heavy work has been done at weekends or during the night but on Tuesday the 6th of December we need to bring heavy machinery onto the campus. This presents a health and safety issue for us, not to mention the noise and dust that this will generate. For this reason, we respectfully request that the majority of our students stay home on this day. The exception to this is year 11 and year 13 students who are preparing for external exams. We will work with them in the far corner of the school away from the worksite. Staff who are not teaching will be working in school on important school development initiatives related to curriculum and project development. We thank you in advance for your support and understanding. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Friday December 2nd - Children need to wear their PE uniform for house competitions. Monday December 5th – No School (Foundation of Quito) Tuesday December 6th – Only Years 11 and 13 at school (Pool construction works) David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, Another wonderful week has passed in primary with World Cup fever tightly gripping the students. There was a wonderful atmosphere across the whole school on Friday for the Ecuador game and the usual BSQ uniform was replaced by a sea of yellow shirts. As we approach the holiday season, we have much to look forward to. The annual Christmas Bazaar is taking place on Saturday December 10th, and all primary students will be involved in the Christmas production on Monday December 12th. Additionally, educational visits are taking place this term. Year 5 have been enjoying their trip to Casa del Alabado today and Year 6 have a trip planned for next week to Parque de Armenia. Plans are also in place to organize a visit for Early Years and Year 1 before the Christmas break. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 3A's Topic in Term 2 is Earthquakes The children began their learning journey by comparing two different photos of a village in Italy that was affected by an earthquake. The 'before' and ' after' images were unfortunately quite striking. The children used the photos to help them create their own sketches. The sketches of Bruce, Martina and Dominique are shown here. We will be moving on to learn about the Richter scale which measure the magnitude of earthquakes this week. } Kind Regards Tim BSQ – Secondary November week 4 It seems this week that we have been impacted by the current influenza outbreak that is impacting the community generally. There has been a huge amount of students who have fallen ill this week along with some staff. Can I ask you all to remember the basics with regard to hygiene and hand washing as these are significant tools to protect against infection? We are trying to minimise risk as much as we can at school. If there are signs please seek medical attention and keep away form school. It is also sensible to wear a mask to avoid spreading germs and bacteria. I have asked staff as a matter of course to share class activities by email and within their class teams page so that students can work from home if needed. If your son or daughter in affected, please ask them to communicate with their teachers if they are unsure. We had a wonderful end to the week on Friday with the Theory of Knowledge Exhibition hosted by our year 13 students. TOK aims to make students aware of the interpretative nature of knowledge, including personal ideological biases – whether these biases are retained, revised or rejected. It offers students and their teachers the opportunity to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge and consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the cultures of others and in the wider world. They welcomed parents, and special guests which included Miss Sadotra who is in the area, and some staff and students from Pacha Mama School, who are in their first year of IB. Well done to Anabella and Samantha who gave very confident welcoming speeches and to all the students who presented excellently at their stands. There will be wider reporting and images to follow. As I write I am listening the wonderful sounds of the students across the campus in various locations watching Ecuador I their game against the Netherlands. These moments are very special and are an opportunity to come together sharing success and disappointment. The noise level was wonderful with screaming, singing and cheering. I hope that the team progresses further as this is giving us all a wonderful way to develop our community spirit. Our year 13 have been working incredibly hard recently and Mrs Moors and the other tutors arranged a lovely film and food afternoon as a wellbeing initiative on Wednesday. Everyone enjoyed the small amount of time afforded to simply relax, eat and watch a film together. These are very simple things but they are so important. Please allow some down time at home and encourage the basics like sleeping sensibly and a following a decent diet. It does worry me when I hear about children working through the night to meet a deadline. There are some tough weeks ahead. It all starts on Monday with their important mock exams and we all wish them the very best of luck. Have a great week everyone Mr Moors Dear BSQ community, As one might expect academic life at BSQ has been thriving since the return to school in September. Pupils have recently received their reports from the first partial and I know there are many successes to celebrate across the board so well done to the students! This is the first marker of the year so for those that did not achieve what they hoped for now is the time for renewed focus and effort. There are many academic challenges ahead for all year groups but in particular our iGCSE and IB students have and increasing number of coursework deadlines as well as mock exams coming up. There are a few things all students could be doing in lessons and at home to help them best prepare for such academic deadlines. I would like to encourage pupils to plan to use a range of strategies within their revision; the time old ‘rewriting notes’ should be a thing of the past. A few strategies are suggested below for them to try out: Make a revision timetable.
Revision cards are small, double-sided flashcards that emphasise key information. They usually mention the topic/question on one side and important details, keywords, mnemonics, etc., on the other. This helps the brain make better connections between those two pieces of information. Past papers and mark schemes – ask your teacher or find some online. Planning answers or completing them really helps with retention and confidence with each exams style. You will know what to expect and practice makes perfect! Exemplar answers are a good way of understanding what the exam board requires of you. Good luck! Miss Standley Senior Lead Learning Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our Community Awesome news for Eduardo This past November 21, Eduardo won first place in the Orange Ball Championship at Club Terravalle. We are very happy with the effort and dedication that he puts into this sport every day and we thank BSQ for their support when we need to leave school before class so that he can participate in tennis tournaments. ¡Buena suerte! Miss Standley Senior Lead Learning Lee Moors Head of Secondary Nuestra ComunidadIncreíbles Noticias para Eduardo El pasado 21 de noviembre, Eduardo obtuvo el primer lugar en el Campeonato Orange Ball en el Club Terravalle.

Thought for the week; ‘What makes a child gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of looking at the world and learning.’ (Chuck Grassley) It was wonderful to see so many members of our community during the report days and at our fabulous Bonfire Night event. Many thanks to the Parent Association for their excellent coordination and organization. And also, thanks to our administrative team for putting on such a great firework display! This week is going to seem very quiet in comparison. Also, we have finally received the report from our external evaluators from the Council of International Schools (CIS). BSQ is the only school in Quito to hold this prestigious standard of external accreditation and we are proud to share the following announcement with you; “CIS is pleased to inform you that your school has been granted candidate status for CIS re-accreditation to conduct a Pathway 2 self-study in the area of learning and teaching. Congratulations go to the leadership team and the school community on this achievement.” CIS evaluate schools every 5 years. This report concludes that we have met the organizations exacting standards for re-accreditation which will be based on active research projects in the areas of learning and teaching. You can expect great things to come! Please check the Primary and Secondary section updates for this week’s news and events. Have a great week everyone. David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear parents, Thank you for your engagement in our school events last week. It was wonderful to see so many of you speaking with your child´s class teacher during the PTC day and having the opportunity to discuss their learning and development. We know that there was some confusion with regards to the grading system. We hope that the following information helps to clarify: A ´C´ grade in any subject, indicates that the student is achieving the expected attainment level for the subject at this time. A C+ or above grade, indicates that the student is working above the expected attainment level for the subject at the time, and a D+ or below grade, indicates that the student is working towards the expected attainment level for the subject at this time. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the bonfire event. As always, it is fantastic to gather as a school community and enjoy the festivities. I continue to be amazed by the support of our community for school events and a big thank you to the PA for their organization of the event. World Cup fever has gripped BSQ! With the world cup now underway, and due to popular demand, Ecuador matches that are being played during school hours will be shown to students. I´m sure that our English and Welsh staff may also be broadcasting games involving these teams too! Finally, Year 5 will be embarking on their trip to Casa del Alabado next Monday (November 28th). Excitement is building and I am sure that they will have a fantastic time. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary November Week 3 We have had some very positive disruption this week with our first parent teacher conferences of the year. This was a huge success for everyone as it allowed us time to all sit and consider progress and approaches to learning. It is also a great opportunity for staff to share the wonderful work that the students are doing. The feedback I received was that parents appreciated the time with teachers and the taking part in open and honest discussions about what is going well and what is still to be secured. Thank you very much for your support if you attended. If you were unable to then I look forward to seeing you at the next opportunity. It is a real investment in teaching time and your help in making this purposeful is absolutely critical. A meeting was also held this week with Camps International, the provider of three more of our residential events this year. We have another year group going to do some conservation work at the coastal mangroves, another who are looking at environmental projects in the jungle, and another who are going to the Galapagos. This is a significant trip which also has a strong sustainability and environmental theme with the group taking part in the planting of native flora on the island. Very soon you will be receiving letters form the organizers so that you can prepare and gain more information about the activities, payment plans, and arrangements. Please ensure that these are supported as they will be wonderful educational experiences for the students involved. Mr Tabango, Bernie C and Martin C in Year 12 arrived finally in Qatar this week for the World cup football tournament. This is a project that we are involved in to promote grass roots football in Ecuadorian school and community settings. Bernie and Martin will be driving the agenda and strategy for the wider community when they return. They are the only students from Ecuador attending and along with Mr Jones, they enjoyed a reception at the Qatar embassy on Monday to see them off. We are all really looking forward to hearing about their experiences and how they enjoyed attending one of the games. Please look out for the wider information on the event in the newsletter. On Monday all Secondary students will be receiving an assembly on the dangers of smoking and Vaping from Dr Luengo. Evidence with smoking is that is seriously endangers your health and through education initiatives and law changes in many countries, the number of adults and young people smoking has dropped significantly over the last decade. Unfortunately, the vacuum this has left has been filled by vaping with the ill-advised and inaccurate view that this is somehow safer. This also seems to be becoming more popular with teenagers. It is critical that as educators we reinforce health and wellbeing and that these messages are enforced at home. I will ask the team to share the key facts form the information with you all so that you are aware of the messages at home. Finally, this week we are preparing some support and information for parents on our processes that ensure the wellbeing of students who are subject to low level name calling or other things that can happen periodically which sees them isolated or socially excluded from their peer groups. BSQ is a small school and this allows many benefits for the students in respect of attention and learning. We are a small family and just as we do at home sometimes there are occasions where children fall out or say or do things that are unkind. In a small group this can be significant and we need to do much to support this. The process has to be done very carefully so that the problem is not inflamed. We are about to announce three dates for a presentation to parents on this. I encourage you all to support this as you will gain much more understanding about how we deal with this. It is normal and it happens in every school. I would encourage you to consider the following points if your son or daughter is unhappy due to a relationship breakdown or other matter that is impacting their wellbeing. - Record the facts, collect evidence and report it to school immediately - Allow the school to investigate to ascertain the facts and wider context - Be supportive and listen and try to not express personal emotion or views (I know it is hard!) - Discuss with key staff at school quickly for advice if you are unsure - Be prepared to accept others viewpoints and a wider picture of events when the facts have been gained. - Please be respectful of the outcomes and supportive of the actions that the school implements. These are child centred and aimed at a resolution and reconciliation - Please also understand that the teaching staff are professional and draw a huge amount of experience to this area. - If you are unhappy with processes or outcomes, then please then share your views with the school leadership team. - Try to avoid social media discussion. This is rarely helpful and usually makes things worse. Social media is a huge concern for us and the use of mobile telephones is becoming a real issue generally. The leadership team and safeguarding leads have discussed the problem and how we deal with it this week. We had a ban last year for younger students which was a huge success and well received by parents. From Monday, students in key stage 3 are not permitted to bring a mobile telephone to school. There really is no need for it here and we would prefer it stays at home. Please can you develop a system at home where it is taken before going to school. Older students who use their phones in school outside of our rules in classrooms or for making calls home during the day and not following correct school procedures, will also be prevented from bringing them to school. This will be on an individual basis so I hope that this is respected form this point onwards. Please do come to the sessions, especially if your son or daughter des have inclusion or social complications. Young adults are learning and the process is very complex and this needs very careful support which is what we are here to do. Have a great week everyone Lee Moors Head of Secondary Community NewsWE LOVE TENNIS It's no surprise our students are great at sports, but we keep on adding championships on tennis. Victor Hugo just won the first place on Club Jacarandá Tournament on his category. CONGRATULATIONS! GO MILA! Mila won the second place in singles and doubles in the tournament, this was a Grade 1 -Under 10 tournament. This means only the top players Under 10 of the country can play it, GO Mila!
Thought for the week (International Anti-Bullying Week); “Strong people stand up from themselves. But the strongest people stand up for others.” (Source unknown) We were very happy to receive David Pottinger (CEO Orbital Education) last week. He left with a very good impression of our school and our community. Good luck to Bernada, Martin and Oscar who fly to Qatar this week in representation of BSQ as part of an ongoing FIFA commitment to community development through football. We are sure they will make us proud. This is Reports week so please make sure you have made your appointment to visit the teachers on Thursday (Secondary) or Friday (Primary and Secondary). It is extremely important that you take this opportunity to follow up on your child’s progress here at school. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the two report days. Finally, please remember to moderate your velocity when passing through the school’s drive thru and to always give way to staff and students who may be crossing this area. The primary school felt revitalized and reenergized during the first week back after the half term break. New enrichment activities have commenced and new topics are being learned about. We look forward to welcoming you onto campus or speaking with you online on Friday (November 18th) for our first PTC of the academic year. During this meeting you will hear about your child´s learning and progress during this first Partial as well as how they have settled in to their new year group. We also look forward to welcoming you on Saturday (November 19th) for our annual bonfire night celebration. It is always wonderful to gather as a school community and I look forward to speaking with many of you then. We would like to take this opportunity to ask you to ensure that children who bring a packed lunch to school are given a healthy, balanced meal. We ask that children do not bring sweets and fizzy drinks to school. In Class 2A, we have begun our Term 2 topic of ´Rivers and Oceans´. We have been exploring the journey of a river from mountain to ocean. We are in the process of creating a big collage display of the river's journey from source to mouth. Practically, we have been using water and materials to demonstrate how snowmelt on the mountains forms streams, which leads to rivers and waterfalls and finally rivers merge and flow into the ocean. We are really enjoying this topic so far! Hannah Kerigan Have a wonderful week ahead! Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Parent´s Phonic Workshop with Teacher Anna Vasilokonstantaki ![]()
BSQ – Secondary Everyone arrived back on Monday after a very well deserved rest. It was a high stakes arrival for year 13 who had to hand in their finished 4000-word extended essay. This is a real academic test for those following the diploma programme as the standard and technical needs in the writing is presented at degree level. The vast majority have finally completed the task this week so I imagine that this is a huge relief for all – well done! We now have a 2-week period for staff to mark the essays in line with the IB rubrics. After this has been done there is a meeting with the supervisor to sign off the process before we submit them to IB for external marking. Year 13 are also now preparing for important mock examinations that will inform them about their current positions and predictions with real validated data outcomes. This will allow us to reshape plans and introduce more assertive mentoring where needed. These outcomes will also inform the predicted grades for those wishing to study overseas next year. Deadlines for these applications are in the New Year so these really do count. If you are a year 13 parent do please support and encourage your son or daughter to follow the advice and use the tools issued to them at school this week. As I always say “they will get what they deserve!” In both senses. Staff are preparing for the parent-teacher conferences next week on the 17th and 18th. Please remember that there are no lessons in school these days. This is to allow staff the time to share success with you as parents. Staff will be showing you physical work and how they are assessing and monitoring performance. You will have received the report for partial 1 by then so this is the perfect opportunity to discuss this. Please ensure that your son or daughter is with you for the meeting as this can be hugely rewarding for all concerned. I would advise you to contact Sandy to secure times. Some staff have limited availability so please be proactive in requesting these to prevent any disappointment. Please also be reminded that staff only have 10 minutes for each appointment. Try to stick to the agenda for that subject. If you have a wider issue then this is for the tutors separately, or of course you can speak to a member of the Secondary Leadership team who can perhaps help. When you arrive at school you will be met with a classroom map in the drive through. I understand that there will be uniform available from the PTA and also unnamed lost property on show. At each classroom you will find some chairs outside to sit in whilst you are waiting. I look forward to your support for this very important event. Next week we all look forward to the much anticipated return of the bonfire, fireworks and the talent show. This is a great celebration and there is much activity from our wonderfully supportive parents and the students who are rehearsing to dazzle at the show. Please bring lots of change as there will be a number of fund raising initiatives available for our student led community teams. They would certainly appreciate your support. Can I please ask that when it does get dark please stay in the areas around the courts and the bus car park area only? The Primary area will be closed off due to low light and health and safety reasons. Finally, I am super proud of our Key Stage 4 students who have represented the school at the Model United Nations event this week. Mr Morrin has prepared them well and I know that they will represent our student voice and benefit hugely from the experience to debate at the highest level. Well done to the Art students as well who enjoyed the visit to the Van Gogh exhibition in Quito. I look forward to their account of the experience next week. Have a great week everyone Mr Moors DUKE OF EDINBURG Students over the age of 14 have the opportunity to participate in the global Duke of Edinburgh Award. The first, available to the current year 10s, the Bronze award, students in year 11, 12 and 13 are participating in the silver award and the gold award is a future possibility. To complete these awards they have to undertake activities for an hour each, each week under the categories; Sport, Service and Skill. Students are able to choose what they would like to participate in and what they would like to achieve as their goal. The activities range from German to Tae Kwon Do to Mandarin to helping the elderly to cycling to working at a dog rescue centre. In the year 10 sessions students have been completing a range of sessions in enrichment time. They have had map skills sessions, First Aid training , putting up tents plus meal planning, they have to cook these meals next week; I’m sure there will be some tasty treats. Below are statements from the students and photographs of their activities can be found here: Recently in the Duke of Edinburgh we have been learning about map scales and different directions as well as how to use a compass. We have also been having some first aid classes, where the doctor explains to us what are the things we need to do in case of emergencies, like burns, asthma attacks, and CPR. And the last thing that we did was learn how to put up tents. Kailani What we have been doing at the Duke of Edinburgh is how to build up a tent, how to read maps and follow the 4 and 6 grid references in the map, compass skills, like how to use a compass in the map for directions also using the 4 and 6 grid references. Recently what we have been doing is first kit medical help. It's how to save someone when they are choking, burned themselves, cut themselves, etc. What we learned is how to do CPR on a teammate that needs help and what the correct body position and the correct hand placement so we do the CPR correctly, to be able to save the person's life. What we also did recently is how to build up a tent with teamwork help. Naomi Teacher Natalie Sawyers Lee Moors Head of Secondary CONGRATULATIONS EDUARDO Eduardo won his first tennis trophy last 29 October, a the Top Tennis Academy tournament in the orange bell category. AWESOME NEWS FROM GONZALO Gonzalo from Yr 11 won the tennis championship at Club Jacarandá, in the fifth category. He was an undefeated champion. We love that our students have the discipline and motivation to keep having amazing results on different sports. GOAL 22 In November 2022, the State of Qatar will host the most important event of the sporting calendar, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. With a shared commitment to ensuring that the tournament’s legacy contributes to an international development. Generation Amazing Foundation and FIFA Foundation are pleased to present Goal 22: Football, Social Impact and Sustainability. Goal 22 is designed to empower students passionate about football with the skills to champion sustainable development. The year-long programme, the first of its kind, will engage a school delegation from each of the 32 countries competing at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. This unique experience will offer students an opportunity to work with peers from across the world to design, develop, and deliver impactful community initiatives that use the positive power of football to safeguard people and the planet. This year from Ecuador, The British School Quito has been selected to participate in the one-year program, two students and one teacher will be part of the three phases of the program. Which involves their participation in several virtual workshops All the community from The British School Quito is excited because of the participation of our 2 students in this program. To select only two students was a hard decision and after reading amazing drafts about the campaigns that students would like to implement in phase 3, authorities have decided that two students from Y12 will be our representatives. Enrichment coordinator Thought for the week; ‘Your feet might leave this place, but your heart never will. Welcome back to a new half-term' (Unknown – modified) We hope you all enjoyed a well-deserved rest and that you are returning to school with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the next 6 weeks. The time will pass very quickly so don’t delay and get cracking as of today. We have a half term packed with academic challenges and events so please check the key dates below. Our next big community event will be Bonfire Night on Saturday the 19th of November (more information soon) so please make sure to leave your afternoon and evening free to join us here at school. For those of you who are new to the school or to this very British of traditions, hopefully the following video clip will give you some idea of what to expect. Bonfire Night David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars: Secondary Reports: Thursday, 17th and Friday, 18th of November Primary Reports: Friday, 18th of November Bonfire Night – Saturday, 19th of November David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Welcome to the beginning of a new half term. I hope that you all enjoyed the break last week and are feeling ready and refreshed for the coming weeks. The last half term ended with lots of fun and excitement with the colour day, pyjama day, Halloween parade and the World Food Day activities. The children had a wonderful time and it was a fantastic way to end our first half term of the academic year. Looking ahead, we have much to look forward to this half term with trips in the planning process, a Christmas production being practiced for, and of course, the Christmas Bazaar. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you all that my emails are open and if you would like to ask any questions, share comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on [email protected]. I am also fortunate to work with a wonderful Primary Leadership Team consisting of the Learning Lead, Ms. Anna Vasilokonstantaki ([email protected]), the Living Lead (pastoral), Ms. Nicola Woollard ([email protected]) and the Head of Early Years, Ms. Gerry Coiro (gcoiro@britishschoolquito.edu.ed). I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary Well what an extremely fun week we have had with the wonderful events and themes arranged by our talented student leaders. This week has been the much anticipated spirit week which is passed to year 12 each year to use as a fundraiser for the charities they are supporting. The school uniforms have well and truly been banished to the back of the wardrobes with students engaging in a number of fun events. On Tuesday the theme was Football shirts and anything but a backpack day. We saw much creativity with picnic hampers, travel cases, Ice boxes, a stroller, and even an industrial cleaning mop bucket being dragged around all day. It never ceases to amaze me how creative and committed our children are to having fun and getting involved to support each other for the cause. The picture below sees some of the year 7 leaving their bags outside the classroom (Yes that is the cleaning bucket – well done Charlie). On Wednesday the theme was colour and ice creams. This culminated in the colour run. This is inspired by the Hindu festival of Holi which celebrates the triumph of good over evil and fills India with colour. The real event is a 5km run without a winner as participants are showered with coloured powder (this is made from cornstarch). Essentially the aim is to have fun with friends and throw colour powder about to get as colourful as possible. As you can see from the photos below Mr Moors was a prime target! On Thursday everyone came in their decades day themes. This involved lots of dressing up again. Well done to year 13 who really did enter the spirit – not only dressing in the style of the 70s but also for sharing the music and entertainment at break time. This was absolutely great fun! As you can see from the disco pose and the cool outfits below, those who could remember that time were transported back. At the time of writing we are all now preparing for the final piece with the much celebrated Halloween parade. There will be more pictures for this to follow. A huge well done to the team organising the Spirit Week. Most are seen in the photo below as they tempted us all with the cake sale. We have had a great time and it is all down to them. CAS AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS As in previous years, the 2 service programs in school are in place and working actively for our community. Y12 organized "Spirit Week" not only to raise funds for two of our main projects Beyond Lagartococha and Sinsoluka but also to bring back the laughter and happiness that characterized our school days. It was a project that required a lot of planning and organization, and they are more than thankful to the school community for their active participation from early years to y13, and all staff. On the other hand, y13 is almost done, completing a few bits and pieces of their individual experiences and projects. For example, Felipe Rodriguez and the 3rd generation of BSQ Beyond Lagartococha, organized the visit of Yadira Ocoguaje from the Secoya community and members of Fundación Raiz, to talk about the job that we do in the Amazon region and invited y12 and y11 to take part in the fifth and sixth generation. For the Christmas Bazaar, we will have a stand, where you can buy traditional ceramic and a very tasty and spicy Secoya aji. Antonella Sanchez also invited members of Quito Sin Mineria to discuss the importance of the Choco Andino and why we need to protect it, as part of it many students are participating in the cleaning initiatives of the Machangara river too, in Parque Los Algarrobos, Cumbaya. Additionally, Maria Veronica Rhor is organizing a volley championship that will take place in the coming weeks, meanwhile, Oliver Wilcox is setting everything up for the traditional "Talent Show" for Bonfire Night. We are more than happy to hold those events again. However, students from y8 and y9 are currently organizing their community project for Fundación Caminitos de Luz, so do not through your old books or sports items, as a big donation drive is coming. More details are to be shared after the break. Finally, I want to thank the Parent Association on behalf of CAS and Community Projects students for all these years they have been supporting all our projects and sometimes our crazy ideas, and they work with us hand in hand. Paola Montenegro Lee Moors Head of Secondary CONGRATULATIONS !We want to congratulate Francisca, who won 4 gold medals and 1 silver in the Guayaquil Classic Gymnastics international competition. One of the gold medals is for the highest score in the accumulated All around category 10 - 11 years.
Thought for the week; “Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.” Deepak Chopra Thank you to all the parents who were able to join us for our coffee mornings over the past weeks. In total we received XX people over the 5 separate sessions. Thanks to your contributions we have been able to identify certain priorities and address certain issues of importance to us all. This is our last week at school before our half term break and it is a week full of fun and learning to bring this first study period to a brief close. Starting Tuesday, we will begin our SPIRIT WEEK activities (see section information for more details) and on Friday the 28th we will close with our traditional Halloween Parade and a World Food Day event packed with relevant educational experiences and guest speakers. We are sure our students will have a great week and we sincerely hope that you will all enjoy a well-deserved half-term break. Classes will resume as normal on Monday, 7th of November. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars.
Principal BSQ – PrimaryLast week marked a week of fun in primary with House Events taking place as well as the Year 2 and 3 trip to Jardin Alado. Students on the trip were able to watch a live birds of prey show, meet a variety of parrots and feed a range of animals including rabbits, llamas and emus. Some groups were also fortunate enough to be able to witness some recovered animals being released back into the wild. A great day was had by all on the trip and we even managed to avoid the rain! Next week is certain to be a fun and busy week with many things happening. From Wednesday, we will be celebrating CAS spirit week whilst raising money for good causes. Wednesday is colour day with children invited to dress in a designated colour (below), Thursday is pyjama day with students invited to come to school in appropriate pyjamas, and Thursday is our Halloween celebration where students can dress in a spooky costume. Additionally, Friday is also our World Food Day celebration with students from Years 1 – 6 involved in a variety of activities throughout the day with parents invited to join us at 2pm for a picnic and Farmer´s Market. Please remember that Friday October 28th is also the last day of the half term. We look forward to seeing students return to school on Monday November 7th after a well-earned rest. I wish your families a wonderful vacation whatever your plans may be. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary We have had an extremely exciting and busy few weeks with students finally having the opportunity to involve themselves in the activities and residential events that sit alongside our academic curriculum. Our Key stage 3 students spent some time planning and organising activities, fundraising and eventually visiting the projects they were supporting. One of these was a project connected to animal welfare where some students from Years 8 and 9 visited the foundation Proteccíon Animal Ecuador (PAE). There photographs and comments follow. Whilst there, the students listened to a talk about the important work PAE does in caring for and rehoming dogs. Following this, we had a wonderful day with the dogs. We bathed them, brushed them, took them on a walk, and swept their kennels. Of course, there was plenty of time for play and cuddles too. Years 8 and 9 also enjoyed a really exceptional trip to El Jardin Alado for another of the community projects. El Jardin Alado is a charity which works to rescue exotic pets from the illegal trade. Where it can, it re-releases them into the wild, and where it can’t they care for the animals, giving them a much better life then they would have should they stay and grow with their owners. Often, these are dangerous animals from the Amazon. People buy these animals when they are young without realising their future potential, they are wild animals after all! This curriculum subject is a multi-week programme which is student led. Students decide in groups how they would like to support a local charity, and it culminates in an educational visit. The Jardin Alado group decided to help by directly raising money for the charity. During the Saturday ‘welcome back picnic’ children supplied doughnuts and hosted a ‘Doughnut Dangle’ game. The game proved to be really successful and raised a large amount of money which was donated to the charity. Of the several species of animal they support, they mainly focus on exotic birds and occasionally wild cats. As featured above, is a picture taken by a student of an Ocelot that the charity rescued. The Ocelot has an extensive caged area, running through trees and giving the animal as much space as possible. Unfortunately, because this Ocelot has become dependant on humans, it can never be released. Next to the Ocelot is one of the many Owls the charity looks after. Fortunately, some of these owls will be released in the next few years once they have been taught to fly. At the rescue centre, the children had a tour and a talk around 3 stations. These stations were the birds of prey, land animals and finally the parrots. They then learned about the various animals habitats, their feeding and their reasons for being at the rescue centre. The children then got the opportunity to feed some of the animals and finally cleaned out their cages and living areas. As a special treat, the pupils participated in a flying lesson for one of the parrots! All in all, the children had a fantastic learning experience and really got stuck in with the cleaning. They can all go away knowing that they have made a difference in an endangered animals life. The third events saw a group of ten students from Y8 and Y9 go to the Lucky animal shelter to help and support in site according to their community project plan. There were some positive and negative things that students realized. The students enjoyed meeting dogs and other animals that the shelter keeps. There are more than 700 dogs, a cow, cats, pigs, ducks, and a horse, they are divided into different sections according to their needs or backgrounds. The volunteer who guided us through the shelter explained students how animals are divided and the stories behind each rescue they´ve done. Students realized that to be a volunteer in Lucky is hard because every single day the shelter should be cleaned up due to the number of animals there are living in. However, students enjoyed playing and helping the animals to have a good place for staying and feeling safe. If you are thinking to become a volunteer at Lucky make sure to take cleaning items like brooms, disinfectants, wear rubber boots and old clothes. Students learned that the most important is to adopt and stop buying dogs in the pet shops, Additionally, they learned that people who are not able to adopt dogs because of limited space at home can sponsor one or more dogs, taking food, blankets or treats for the dogs to the shelter. The group also go on to say that if you are able to support animal shelters in anyway do it, they will appreciate it. We also had our intrepid explorers out with their Silver uke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition to Ibarrra. The three-day hike plays an integral role in the preparation for the qualifying adventurous journey later in the year. Five year 11 students and five year 12 students set out early Wednesday morning to travel over to Ibarra and begin their first day hike, starting off next to Laguna Yahuarcocha. Their first day involved a 12km hike with full backpacks holding their sleeping bags, food and personal belongings. The sun was intense, but, through correct route planning, they had regular stops to hydrate and stock up on energy rich food. Students set up camp and cooked a calorie rich meal before heading off for an early night. The second day was much more challenging, with over 900m climb and 16+km to cover. Students carried day packs due to the trick terrain. Despite it being a more challenging hike, many made the most of the outdoors by singing and enjoying the views. With a little rain to end the day, the students headed back to camp to shower, cook and get some well-earned rest. The final day involved an easier hike around the lake with full backpacks, but intense sun made for a hot last day of their expedition. With their practice expedition complete, the Silver students now have the chance to reflect upon issues which arose during the three days including not enough carbs in an evening meal, shoes not being worn correctly and navigation practice. This should all lead to better preparation and greater understanding of skills needed for their upcoming expedition to Quilotoa. Recently year 7 and 9 attended our new residential events which were a huge success. Year 7 students entering Secondary School, as they started the month with their long-awaited residential fieldtrip to the Amazon Jungle! From October 3rd to 6th students embarked on a four-day adventure to the Amazon regions surrounding Tena and Archidona. Their trip consisted of various teambuilding activities, hikes, waterfalls, caves, swimming, wildlife, pizza and of course many challenges and learning opportunities. This trip was an opportunity for students to face their fears, gain independence, and most importantly build relationships and make new friends. Some highlights according to our students were: Visiting a Shaman from an indigenous village on the Rio Napo. Night swimming in the pool at the lodge with their friends A hike into gran cañon and swimming under a giant waterfall coming through a cave Nights in their cabins with friends and of course jungle insects and bugs This was trip that the students will not soon forget and will be inked into their memories forever. Below are some thoughts from some of our Year 7’s about their experiences: “One of my favourite parts was just being with my friends and getting to hang out with them a lot.” Charlie “I wasn’t able to join the trip, but one of my favourite parts of Secondary School so far has been how kind and nice everyone has been to me.” Krish “I absolutely loved going into the gran cañon and seeing the waterfall splashing into the water. When I entered the waterfall, it was really cold.” Natalia “We loved seeing monkeys and monkeys on the roof.” Elias, Arian, Robbie “I loved hiking in the gran cañon and when we reached the top it felt amazing especially when we go to swim.” Israel “The more time I have spent in year 7, the more friends I have made. I am really glad to be in this school with my friends.” Dasha “My favourite part of my trip to the jungle was sharing time with my friends and making new friends.” Nicolas From the 27th - 30th September, Year 9 students finally got the opportunity to spend time away from school and attend their long delayed residential trip. Over the four days they were able to work together to develop teamwork skills and develop new relationships within their friendship groups. There were lots of exciting opportunities to try new activities, such as jumping from the giant Ceibo tree and zip lining into a lake. The trip had a positive impact on their self-esteem and gave them confidence to try new experiences. Below is a summary of the exciting activities they took part in, written by the students: Day 1. Tuesday, It was a fun day. The bus ride was, Let’s say, interesting. Most people were singing their favourite song while some were covering their ears because of the loud noise. Well, we arrived at a lovely place where we walked about 30 minutes to the waterfall, then after a long walk that seemed to last for hours, we reached it. It was a wonderful place most of us went straight into what felt like freezing cold water but it was really fun. Day 2. The next day we ate then went on a walk but everything was very chilled. We also had lots of time to play in our favourite room, the ‘game room’. It was really fun. Then we made some kind of bread that was very fun then we went to sleep. Day 3. We did the hardest activity, using a compass to navigate a scavenger hunt which took us around 4 hours. One of my favourite moments was when we swam at the lake. Lee Moors Head of Secondary Thought for the week; “The wise make the world beautiful by respecting others”. Maxime Lagacé The School Drive-Thru System (arrival and departure) This week we would like to draw your attention to the school drive-thru system, specifically arrival and departure procedures. As it stands, the current system, put in place to deal with arrivals and departures during COVID, works pretty well in the mornings, but has sufficient shortcomings in the afternoons. We would like to inform you of our plans to try to tackle this situation, whilst also pointing out that there will never be a perfect solution to the issues of traffic congestion and environmental contamination until the majority of us embrace the idea of collective transport services with certain exceptions and exemptions. However, this is not the appropriate forum to address all of these issues so for now, let’s focus on the most pressing problem, afternoon pick-up arrangements. Firstly, the school has firmly established rules on traffic circulation and arrival to the campus, rules which are sadly being violated on a daily basis. This disrespect for a collective community agreement is in fact a gross disrespect to the majority of the parents who do respect the school values, rules and guidelines and who queue daily waiting to collect their children. I am of course referring to the entry of vehicles approaching from the south belonging to families who do not live in the Los Chillos valley area. This week we will be issuing families who live in the Los Chillos valley area (as registered in the Enrolment process) with an identification to be displayed in their cars. Once these identifications have been issued, any car trying to enter the campus from the south (right turn), that does not have this identification clearly displayed, will be sent down to the roundabout to return to the school from the north. Whilst hopefully addressing the annoying disrespect that a few members of our community have for our values and collective agreements, this strategy will not solve the underlying problem of long queues and wait times. In order to tackle this, we need to work together. We plan to re-introduce strategies that were in place before the pandemic combined with improvement modifications based on what we have learnt over this time. However, for safety reasons this cannot happen until the municipality reinstall a velocity control speed bump and a pedestrian crossing, projects which are scheduled to take place during the half term break. If all goes to plan this will allow us to introduce this combined strategy in November. However, to make a real difference to the afternoon traffic situation we need your help in rethinking your arrival times. We currently have parents arriving to start queuing as early as 1.45 pm and by 3.00 pm we have a queue of 60+ cars tailing back along the northern approach road. We beseech you or your family driver, to please not arrive/start queuing before 3.00pm. Why sit in cars for over an hour when a more coordinated approach could reduce your wait time significantly and avoid causing traffic circulation problems. If we work together, we can make a difference but the greatest difference you could make would be registering for our school bus transport service. In the meantime, please;
Finally, thank you to all of our primary parents who attended the first round of coffee mornings. This week is the turn of secondary. Once the full first cycle is completed, we will issue a brief report on the issues raised and the strategies adopted. Together we will make a significant difference. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary .As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. THIS WEEK Secondary Coffee Morning (yrs. 10, 11, 12 and 13): 8.15am to 9.00am, Tuesday 18th of October David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary any thanks to those of you who were able to attend our primary coffee mornings last week. It was wonderful to speak with you and to hear what is going right in the primary school at BSQ and what you feel we can do to improve further. We will be hosting these events throughout the academic year and hope that you can join us for one in the future. This week, Year 2 and 3 depart on their long-awaited trip to Jardin Alado. The students are incredibly excited and cannot wait to explore. We are sure that Year 2 and 3 parents will be inundated with tales of their findings. Planning is well underway for the last week of the half term. This incorporates CAS spirit week where there will be opportunities for students to dress up, as well as a World Food Day celebration. More information on these events will be shared with you shortly in anticipation of these days. Key dates: Tuesday October 18th – Year 2 and Year 3 trip to Jardin Alado Friday 28th October – Last day of school before the mid-term break Have a wonderful week ahead. In Nursery, we have had a wonderful start welcoming our youngest students to their new school environment – knowing that this transition can be an intimidating, yet exhilarating experience for our young learners! We understand that before learning can take place, children have a need to feel secure in their setting. Our students have various needs – a need to feel safe and to be capable, to be independent and to feel loved. Therefore, creating an environment where they can feel confident, know what to expect and enjoy learning both independently and with friends is at the heart of what we do here in Nursery. We understand that when children feel safe, they are able to take the risks necessary to be in relationships, to explore and try new things. Therefore, throughout the course of this term, we have been supporting our students developing independence, by guiding them towards taking personal responsibility for themselves e.g. cleaning up after eating times, tidying away activities when finished with them. As well as, supporting their understanding of classroom boundaries and routines, promoting their autonomy to move freely around the class so to select and use activities that may capture their interest. As every day is an English day – we have had a steady focus on promoting and expanding our students’ English language skills in relation to their listening and attention, understanding and speaking. Taking time to introduce familiar expressions to support their social and emotional developmental needs – such as practice to say ‘can I play with you?, help me please, I need pee pee, as well as introducing simple concepts such as big/small, clean/dirty etc. Moreover, it has been amazing to observe our learners confidence to respond in full English sentences to discuss their feelings, likes/dislikes, as well as to follow simple instructions and participate in reciting a variety of songs and rhymes. Due to their growing self-confidence and well-being, we have even expanded our learning into more academic areas - practicing reciting numbers in sequence to ten, having fun playing a variety of movement games so to count objects and different actions, as well as more recently having a focus on identifying abstract numbers, one to three. Furthermore, our students have been learning to recognize their name and the first sound it makes – and some children have even started to form correctly the first letter! It has been a joy to observe the budding friendships in our class and the flourishing social cohesion of our classroom community. We have had a fantastic start to the new school year! Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary From the 27th - 30th September, Year 9 students finally got the opportunity to spend time away from school and attend their long delayed residential trip. Over the four days they were able to work together to develop team work skills and develop new relationships within their friendship groups. There were lots of exciting opportunities to try new activities, such as jumping from the giant Ceibo tree and zip lining into a lake. The trip had a positive impact on their self-esteem and gave them confidence to try new experiences. Feedback from the tutor group was very positive. In particular, their favourite activities included:
Lee Moors Head of Secondary BSQ – Boletín 9 2022-2023 Pensamiento de la semana; “Lo sabio hace un planeta hermoso al respetar a los otros”. Maxime Lagacé El sistema escolar de Drive-Thru (llegada y salida) Esta semana quisiéramos llamar su atención en el inconveniente de los procedimientos del sistema de Drive-Thru, en específico la llegada y salida en el la mañana al dejar a los niños/as, y en la tarde el sistema de retirarlos. Como esta plantado, el actual sistema, propone lidiar con las llegadas y salidas durante COVID, funciona bastante bien en las mañanas, pero tiene poca fluidez en las tardes. Quisiéramos informarles que nuestro plan para manejar esta situación, mientras también resaltamos que nunca llegara a ser algo perfecto en relación al tráfico y combinación ambiental hasta que la mayoría de nosotros apoyemos la idea de servicio de transporte colectivo con ciertas excepciones y exenciones. Sin embargo, este no es el medio apropiado para tratar todos estos inconvenientes, así que por ahora vamos a enfocarnos en el problema más importante, los arreglos en la salida de la tarde. Primeramente, el colegio firmemente ha establecido la circulación del tráfico y la llegada al campus, reglas que lamentablemente se incumplen diariamente. Esta falta de respeto por el acuerdo de la comunidad colectiva es una gran falta para la mayoría de los padres y madres que van de acuerdo con los valores, reglas y guías. Y quienes hacen fila diariamente esperando para recoger a sus hijos/as. Estoy refiriéndome claramente a la entrada de vehículos que se acercan desde el sur, de familias que no viven en el área del Valle de los Chillos. Esta semana vamos a enfocarnos en familias que viven en el área del Valle de los Chillos (debidamente registrados en el proceso de matrícula escolar) con identificaciones que se muestren en el carro. Cualquier carro que intente entrar al campus desde el sur (giro derecho) que no tenga esta identificación mostrada en el carro será enviado hasta el redondel de abajo para que regrese a la escuela por la vía norte. Mientras esperamos resolver esta molesta falta de respeto que algunos miembros de nuestra comunidad, muestran a los valores y acuerdos colectivos, esta estrategia no solventara el problema debajo que son las largas filas y tiempo de espera. En orden superar esto, necesitamos trabajar juntos. Planeamos re introducir estrategias que existían antes de la pandemia combinadas con los aprendizajes y mejoras que tenemos desde este momento. Sin embargo, por razones de seguridad esto no puede suceder hasta que la municipalidad reinstale el rompe velocidades y paso cebra. Si es que todo va de acuerdo al plan esto nos permitirá introducir una estrategia combinada en noviembre. Para crear una diferencia real en el tráfico de las tardes necesitamos su ayuda en repensar sus tiempos de llegada. Por el momento tenemos padres y madres llegando al inicio de la fila a las 13h45 hasta las 15h00 tenemos una fila de más de 60 carros bajando por el lado norte de la carretera. Les imploramos a ustedes y conductor familiar, que por favor no llegue antes o empiecen a hacer fila antes de las 3.00 pm. Porque sentarse en un carro por alrededor de una hora cuando una forma más coordinada podría reducir su tiempo de espera significativamente y evitar causar problemas en la circulación del trafico. Si trabajamos juntos, podemos hacer una diferencia, pero la mayor diferencia que puede hacer es contratar el servicio de transporte escolar. Mientras tanto;
Lee Moors Director de Secundaria Thought for the week; “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Mahatma Gandhi This week we look forward to starting our first round of coffee mornings. The purpose of these coffee mornings is for you to get to know the leadership team a little more closely. We are keen to hear about your perceptions and experiences and to share our own points of view, the overall aim being to strengthen our knowledge and understanding as a community. We will start each session with a fairly generic theme, on this occasion ‘Effective, empathetic communication,’ basically, how we can communicate more effectively as a community. Hopefully this will get us all talking and open the way for a broader, more open discussion. The first coffee morning will be for Early Years, our nursery and reception parents, and it will start at 8.15am in the library, on the morning of Tuesday the 11th of October. Our primary coffee mornings will be divided into two sessions to keep our discussion groups small enough to allow everyone to participate, and to also be able to find a parking space! Parents of students in Years 1, 2 and 3 are cordially invited to join us on Wednesday the 12th of October, at 8.15am in the library. Parents of students in Years 4, 5 and 6 are invited to join us on Thursday the 13th of October, at 8.15am in the library. The sessions will last 45 minutes, and finish at 9am. If you have children in more than one of these age groups, you only need attend 1 session but you are welcome to join us again if you wish. These sessions are completely voluntary and if you are unable to attend, please don’t worry, there will be more opportunities to participate later in the year. The secondary school coffee mornings will take place the following week on Monday the 17th (Years 7 to 9) and on Tuesday the 18th (Years 10 to 13). These events will be for broad, general discussions, if you have a personal situation, as always please contact the relevant teacher or Head of School. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for these enriching social events. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. If you missed Tuesday´s session (EYFS) you are welcome to join this session. Primary Coffee Morning (yrs. 4, 5 and 6): 8.15am to 9.00am, Thursday 13th of October NEXT WEEK Secondary Coffee Morning (yrs. 7, 8 and 9): 8.15am to 9.00am, Monday 17th of October Secondary Coffee Morning (yrs. 10, 11, 12 and 13): 8.15am to 9.00am, Tuesday 18th of October David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful, long weekend. It was a pleasure to tour prospective families around the school last week, allowing parents to see the wonderful journey of learning and exploration that students go through from Early Years through to Year 6. The amazing progress that children make in their formative years cannot be underestimated and a walk from Nursery, who were counting to 10, through each year group to Year 6, who were multiplying two four-digit numbers, reemphasized this to me. As a teaching body, we are currently in an observation cycle, with observations undertaken to highlight the wonderful teaching and learning on offer, whilst also taking the opportunity to further develop ourselves as teachers. As always, this process is incredibly useful to build upon the excellent practices already in place at BSQ. We look forward to welcoming you into school next week for the first of our coffee mornings and for the first Parent Teacher Conference next month. It was pleasing to finalize the details and share them with you last week. Please take note of the coffee morning dates and put Friday November 18th in your diaries. Another important date has soon come around as Year 2 and Year 3 prepare for their long-awaited trip to Jardin Alado. Excitement has been building for their trip next Tuesday (October 18th). I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Now that we have passed the middle of Term 1 it has given me the opportunity to reflect on how welcome the whole community at BSQ has made me, and my fellow new teachers, feel. Just a few months ago I had no idea I would be living and working in Ecuador and any nerves about feeling lonely or isolated in a new country have disappeared. As the CIS team commented to me on their recent visit, one of the great things about BSQ is the number of smiling, happy faces you see around campus. I believe it is one of the strongest aspects of living and learning at BSQ and contributes to the strong learning culture we see in every classroom. Year 6B have demonstrated their own enthusiasm for learning this week as they came to the end of their Native American Myths unit in literacy. Just a few weeks ago we set them the task of writing their own myth that explained something about how and why the Hummingbird was created. In the following weeks we developed these initial ideas and really began to understand what the core features of myths are. In addition to consolidating key writing rules in punctuation and written speech, what impressed me the most was the creativity that shone through in the ideas that 6B had regarding the creation of the Hummingbird. Every story was unique and captured something different about the personality of the writer. It was a joy to read the finished stories and I can’t wait to see how their writing continues to develop over the next year. Congratulations! 6B! Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary It was wonderful this week to receive the initial feedback from the CIS team that visited us last week to consider the educational standards we are meeting at BSQ. As always, the students and staff made me really proud to be part of their ‘education’ family at the school. Everyone worked hard and were really keen to impress. This radiated happiness and welcome around the school, and in classrooms ambition and determination was abundant. It was noted that our values were absolutely embedded in all that we do here. This is a great credit to everyone. I feel compelled to share with you the words from their team. A fuller report will follow for us to use to frame our development goals going forward. “What we will recall, is the friendly welcome the students receive as they arrive in the morning. That is merely the start of the day, but it does set the tone for purposeful learning and says to the parents, that this school cares. It is not the only thing we will take away, the commitment of students to community and environmental projects – and being put right by Samantha (Well done Samantha!!) related to ethical sources of solar panels. On reflection also, it was remarkable the adaptation to new teachers of the students - taken in their stride - and trying to capture what was done to help that process because it cannot be by accident. The new teachers can also be proud of this too”. I do hope that this is reassuring that we have transitioned extremely well indeed in what could have been a difficult period with so many new staff. I see this every day here – children love school, they are happy, and they have lots of fun. You hear it and see it everywhere you go. This is a critical element of their success. The academia is much easier if these fundamentals are in place. This week the year 7 students have had a wonderful time in the jungle. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to gel and enjoy time together away from the securities of home. I was fortunate enough to be in the car park when they arrived back. They all looked tired and a little grubby, but there was a real buzz about the fun and experiences they had together. Well done to Miss Teevan and Mr Brett for taking them and living with them for 4 days and ensuring that they were safe and well. The next events are in March so do please look out for the communication if this involved your son or daughter. I hope you received my communication about the parent teacher conferences. The first si about a month away. They are as follows this year: 17th-18th November 2022 All year groups – no lessons so staff can facilitate lessons. All Secondary students will be at home there two days with tasks set independently 5th April 2023 Year 11 and Year 13 only for public examination preparation – All Secondary students will be at on this day with tasks set independently 17th May 2023 Years 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 only. Year 11 and 13 will be sitting or preparing for public examinations. All Secondary students will be at home on this day with tasks set independently. Year 11 and 13 students with published exams will be in school if needed. Do please make a note of these in your calendar. The benefit this year is that they will be face-to-face in classrooms. This means that books and work will be at hand for you to look at. We hope that you can support and attend with your sone and daughter as these are extremely purposeful opportunities to celebrate success. Finally, please be aware that staff will be putting the first set of attainment and effort data on the system by the 14th of October. This will lead into the first report of the year so you can see their targets and how they are doing against these. When you attend the PTC, you should be armed with the questions that you need answers to with this data. Remember that not all students are academically targeting or able to achieve A grades. Their academic ability may suggest a C. If they get the C grade they have done well. If they get a B then they have done incredibly well. Please understand where your son or daughter sits as it is important that you understand this.
Lee Moors Director de Secundaria Thought for the week; “What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.” Joseph Addison This week primary will be celebrating ‘World Smile Day’ on Friday the 7th of October, so we sincerely hope you will share a smile with us and others along the way. Thank you everyone who contributed so positively last week during our CIS review week. Whether it was through a smile in the drive through drop off, a passing comment or greeting in a corridor or passageway, or a more formal meeting or interview, you were all awesome! Our visitors left with an outstanding impression of our school and our community. Thank you everyone. Next week we will start our Open Houses for potential new parents. The best promotion is often personal advocacy so If you have any friends or know of any families interested in joining our school community, please let them know about our Open Day events. (See below for dates and times) And finally, the Senior leadership team cordially invites you to join us for our October Coffee mornings. These are open invitation events during which we will discuss school life in general. The coffee morning will have an initial theme to engage us in thinking and discussion, after which we are interested in hearing from you and sharing thoughts and ideas on school development. If you can’t make it this month, no worries, we will be having regularly monthly coffee mornings, so hopefully you can join us next month. Have a great week. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. OPEN DAYS – FOR FAMILIES INTERESTED IN JOINING OUR BSQ COMMUNITY
Principal BSQ – Primary would firstly like to echo the words of David by saying thank you for your contributions to the visiting CIS team last week. I am particularly proud of our newly formed Primary School Council who answered questions and represented BSQ wonderfully with our visitors. The CIS visit is part of an ongoing process of accreditation and self-review which gave us the opportunity to exhibit what we do so well here at BSQ, whilst reflecting on what we can do even better. This concept of evaluation and reflection is something that we expect and encourage from students in order to be lifelong learners, so it is imperative that we do the same as a school. As we continue to return to normality, I am pleased that Year 2 and Year 3 will be embarking on a school trip to Jardin Alado on October 18th. School trips are a wonderful way of enriching our curriculum and giving students opportunities to learn beyond our campus. We are working towards further trips in due course to ensure that all students are given these opportunities. Please do spread the word about our upcoming open days and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our upcoming coffee mornings. Year Six have had a fantastic start to the year! The way they have settled in, and the way in which they have been behaving is amazing. Mr Burbano and I have been overwhelmed with how fantastic they have been so far! We have completed many art exercises so far this year, and the 6A students have really impressed all of us the quality of their art. The artwork that you can see has had a purpose within our learning, and it is all explained below. In our art lessons, we have been studying the American artist Alma Thomas. We have been practising using different objects to print with to create work in the style of hers. We have used toothpicks, cardboard, fingers and the ends of paintbrush to name a few. Whilst learning about the USA and its history in our Topic lessons, we have produced some fantastic artwork related to the Grand Canyon, as well as Inuit inspired artwork. The first 'house event' in Key Stage Two was a drawing competition! The students were given a reference of each volcano (Antisana, Cayambe and the Ilinizas), and they used a sketching technique to draw their respective house volcano. To commemerate the Queen's passing on 8th September, Year Six produced drawings of her lifetime ranging from 1945 up until meeting Mrs Liz Truss in 2022. The focus and attention to detail during this was impeccable. Fantastic work, 6A! Here you can see examples of the art we have done. From the super 6A Have a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary One of the critical elements of school leadership and development is self-evaluation and reflection on areas that we are doing well with and areas that could be developed. This week we have had a visit from the new Regional Head of School from Orbital Education, Jonathan Dey. He is extremely impressed by our family spirit and by our climate and environment for learning. We have also enjoyed a visit from the Council of International Schools (CIS). This is an important time for us as it tests our views of where we stand with a number on international accreditation strands. Mrs Newman last year spent time writing our preparatory report which as you can imagine was extremely positive with all of the work conducted by staff and students last year. I am incredibly proud of the staff and students as they have reinforced fully our views. It was hugely rewarding to sit in the feedback debrief and listen to anecdotes involving the secondary school students and staff. They were enormously impressed by the happiness and community feeling around the secondary school. The student council and the student leadership team represented our values very well indeed. They were confident and not afraid to give their opinions and recommendations. Well done particularly to the following students: Anabella, Samantha, Charlie Chamberlain, Jules Minster, Kailanni Minster, Barbara, and Matias C. They were also hugely impressed with what they saw in the classrooms. Everyone seen was engaged with engaging and creative learning activities. Well done to the teaching team with this consistency. The Bandera ceremony on Monday was wonderful for the year 13 students and their very proud parents. They did excellently with the delivery of the ceremony with everything is the right place. Well done to them, Mrs Lorena, and Mr Fernando who worked hard in preparing them. I was extremely proud of the whole school who practiced so seriously and supported the event with the demands of the ceremony on them. Again, there were few paces out of step and the hot conditions were a challenge. Year 9 finally got away for their residential event. This was originally planned for June 2019. COVID and the Paro meant that this was postponed on three occasions. They had an excellent event, and everyone enjoyed themselves enormously. Next week the class and tutors will share with us some stories and pictures form the adventure. On Friday afternoon 20 of the staff team did the training to prepare for the CIS school development programme. This will allow us over the next year to ‘deep dive’ into our desired development areas. There are 4 that are all aimed to develop outcomes for our students. The four areas we will be considering are the pastoral elements in the school, Language Learning, Sustainability, and the use for assessment and data to promote inclusion and outcomes. These are critical areas that feed our core purpose which is simply ensuring that every child benefits from our values and achieves their best potential. Finally form me good luck to all of the year 7 students who are embarking on their first residential to the jungle. They will have an extremely rewarding time is what looks like a wonderful environment. I am pleased to say that all students in the year are involved in some way. Year 10 have had a mixed start to their IGCSEs. So to support them in LLS this week we looked at the power of words. In 2 lines Mr Martin and Miss Sawyers drew a simple shape on a piece of paper on the back of a student, this image was then passed forward by each student, till the final one drew on the board. The final image was VERY different compared to the first. They understood that what they may have heard from someone may not be the truth and that telling someone else may change the story more and could impact people. In Duke of Edinburgh Enrichment this week, which many of the class have chosen for enrichment, Dr Sara visited and taught them skills of First Aid in preparation for their adventurous journeys. The class were taught how to respond to a range of different medical needs. They were trained in how to perform CPR. They will be having future sessions on other First Aid skills next week too. Have fun all and have a wonderful week. Lee Moors Jefe de Secundaria Thought for the week; “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” Henry Ford Today, we recognised the importance of national traditions celebrating the successes of our Yr. 13 students with the highest-grade averages through the highly emotive flag ceremony. Principal BSQ – PrimaryAnother busy week has come and gone in the primary school this week. Last week saw the elections of our student council taking place, well done to those newly elected! The new council have already met and their work will continue this week as a number of our elected school councillors will be speaking to the visiting CIS team. The visiting CIS accreditors will also have the opportunity to observe lessons across the primary school and witness the fantastic learning taking place. We look forward to welcoming our guests and showing them why BSQ is a great place to learn! We are approaching the end of the first reporting period and as such, teachers are gathering data to determine the progress and attainment of students so far this year. As parents, you can expect the first report in October for Year 1 to Year 6 students. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary This week has seen visitors to the school arriving to give information to our older students about university destinations. On Wednesday we enjoyed a visit from USFQ so that key dates, activities, and deadlines could be shared with those students planning on studying in Ecuador next year. On Thursday it was the turn of a delegation of 12 different universities from around the world to share the opportunities on offer. These important types of events have been missed from our calendar for a couple of years due to COVID. It really is refreshing to see them back and the students benefiting from the information. The events were not just restricted to year 13 but also years 11 and 12 so that they can also start thinking about next steps. Everyone involved appreciated the guidance and opportunity to have discussions with people outside if the school. On Friday last week we experienced a focus day to set the tone for the day off on Monday for Queen Elizabeth II funeral. This was a wonderful event that was based in subject areas and students experiencing activity on a carousel so that they experience the full range of education. In English there was an analysis of a poem written by the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage called Floral Tribute. It is written through the metaphor of the lily of the valley - one of the late Queen's favourite flowers, which appeared in her coronation bouquet. The first letter of each line spells out "Elizabeth" when taken together. You can find the Poem HERE. Following the activity students were encouraged to write their own poem after considering Floral tribute. I am very pleased to be able to share with you the wonderful and moving work of Felipe Rodriguez in year 13 who penned his poem for his Grandmother Isabel. Intertwined with love and affection, Sailing on to a greater tomorrow, one without the chains of humanity, A land capable of sacred heights, those of which she deserves. Bells ring for her departure, with the nostalgia of all the memories we shared. Even as she leaves, like a free bird through an open window into the horizon, Love persists, every time I look at her pictures, think of her laugh, remember the touch of her hands. I know now the meaning of sadness, So as to not cry about the lack of her presence, And not sink in the remembrance of her leaving, Because it will overtake me, Every loving moment spent with her is recollected, reteaching me to never stop loving, Lasting a lifetime, and another, and another, and a million more. His inspiration led him to write the above original poem conceding that this is just the first part. He goes on to say that “I guess my newfound innate talent for poetry, as my mother has said to me many times (therefore it must be true), I have written an additional stanza.” It is wonderful work Felipe and thanks on behalf of us all for sharing these intimate thoughts. Finally, I am very excited to finally see all the planning and discussions coming to fruition for the residential events. Our first event departs next week with year 9 going off to the Northern Highlands and year 7 who head off to the jungle on the 3rd October. Please do support these events as they are hugely important educational opportunities for the children to get away and live with each other. Often the best and deepest learning takes place outside of the classroom. If children are not included there will inevitably be regrets once everyone comes back with the stories and the excitement of the activities they experienced (away from parents). Please encourage them to be brave and take part. On Friday I met with Camps International about trips planned in March and June to the Galapagos and other wonderful venues around the country for the other year groups. Please look out for information on these exciting opportunities and make sure your son or daughter is involved. Hi, we are Gonzalo and Juan Jose, year 11A’s student council representatives and this is what's going on in the BSQ campus. As you may know, this year many new teachers have arrived and become part of the BSQ community. Last year many of my classmates were worried that incoming teachers could not fulfil their high expectations, however, already a month into school, we could not be more satisfied with the quality of their education. Every single detail in their class seems important to them, from the connection to students to the comprehension of the subject they are teaching. Without a doubt each one of our new teachers provides an excellent level of education whilst still creating relationships with the students which creates a friendly yet educational environment for us inside and outside the classroom. Furthermore, as for myself (Gonzalo), I am particularly enjoying school this year. The welcomeness of the whole school and how every year group, from Year 7 to Year 13 knows one another is truly magnificent and something I had never seen before in any of the four countries I've lived in before. Anywhere you go within BSQ’s campus, you will always find a friend or someone who is kind and willing to help you. We can see examples of camaraderie within school when during breaks and lunch, people from different year groups come together and play sports as teams instead of remaining enclosed within their year group. This way, students share with each other and sometimes even with teachers who join in games for fun. As I've mentioned, I find this shocking. In schools I’ve visited or been part of before, year groups always had this sense of self-pride and tried to not interact with people that were younger or older than themselves, sometimes even looking down on them, but here in BSQ, it's such a welcome relief that I was able to find such a friendly, warm and loving environment that's truly a role model for schools all around the globe, not only here in Ecuador. Thank you for your help and cooperation.
Saludos Cordiales, Sr. Butler y Srta. Espinosa Lee Moors Director de Secundaria |
