BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, The end of the term is almost upon us. Whilst we reflect on this relatively short term, it has not been without its challenges as well as many successes. The greatest challenge that we faced was the swift transition to online learning. Now two weeks removed from this, I am left with a sense of pride of how wonderfully both staff and students (supported by families) moved to an online modality. It has been wonderful to see the seamless return to campus and to see children living and learning together as they should. This was clear to see last week with the wonderful house events held on Thursday and Friday last week. Please be reminded that Friday February 9th marks the end of the term, and all students will finish school at 12pm on that day. Students will return to school on Monday February 19th. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a fantastic carnaval break. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Nursery Newsletter Dear families, Since returning from the December break Nursery students have embarked on their Phonics Literacy journey. For our enthusiastic young learners this involves using their visual perception skills to visually discriminate between different letter shapes, learning letter-sound relationships to connect the sounds of the English alphabet with their corresponding graphemes and practicing elemental skills that promotes their self-confidence and fluency as they continue to undertake more complex challenges regarding their reading and writing. Already our eager learners have learned a variety of letter-sound correspondences. As well as, practicing their capacity to move their pencils anti-clockwise and re-trace vertical lines in preparation for forming letters correctly. Furthermore, throughout each lesson we provide opportunity to further expand and strengthen children’s English vocabularies – singing songs and listening to stories that are conducive with the letter sound of that week. It has been incredible to observe many of our young students already blending the individual sounds in words together so to listen and say a complete word aloud. Gerry Coiro BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ community, I would like to emphasize the significance of promptly sharing and forwarding medical certificates to Dr. Elizabeth Mbata, our school doctor. Your cooperation ensures that she can effectively follow up on the recommendations provided by your specialists, contributing to the overall well-being of our students. Her email address is: e[email protected]. Additionally, please consider the importance of sending your child to school with a hat or cap to protect them from the sun and UV rays, particularly during outdoor activities such as lunch and breaks. This small measure plays a crucial role in safeguarding our students from potential sun-related risks. Moreover, I'd like to remind you that all secondary students have been assigned lockers since the beginning of the year. It is advisable for them to use these lockers instead of carrying around all their personal belongings. Rest assured; the lockers are secure. During these couple of weeks and after the break, we will continue emphasizing the importance of ensuring personal safety and creating a more organized and secure environment within the school premises. Lastly, this Friday y12 and ks3 students will feature various events to support CAS students and community projects, including a color run, bake sales, and more. Students' participation in these activities will greatly contribute to the success of these initiatives. Furthermore, a friendly reminder that Friday, February 9th, marks the end of the term, with all students concluding their school day at 12 pm (midday). School will resume on Monday, February 19th. I hope you all enjoy a fantastic week ahead and may your carnival break be filled with joy and memorable moments.
BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, It was so wonderful to welcome students back onto campus last week, students were so excited to see each other, their teachers and to recommence in-person learning. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the maintenance, canteen and cleaning staff who worked hard to ensure that we could re-open at such short notice. We know that security is of paramount importance to us all now. I want to assure you all that our security provision is constantly being monitored and we are in regular contact with our security company to ensure that we are offering the safest environment possible. Indeed, you may have seen additional security personnel during drive-through times, evidence of our commitment to this area of school life. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ community I want to express my gratitude for the warm welcome back to campus this past week and commend your ongoing dedication and hard work in contributing to our positive learning environment. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances from the last couple of weeks, we find it necessary to reschedule the "Juntas de Curso" originally planned for the 29th of January. The new date for these important teacher meetings will now be the 2nd of February. Due to this change, we inform you that there will be NO lessons on Friday. To ensure continuity in learning, teachers will upload and set up activities on Teams for their students, as the normal scheduled. This was informed last week in an email sent to all secondary parents and legal guardians. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in this matter. We believe that these teachers' meetings will have a positive impact on the overall educational experience, and we look forward to the continued collaboration between our dedicated teaching staff and supportive parents. Finally, we are analyzing the continuity on some residential trips and sports fixtures and the new dates will be shared with you in coming days. I wish a lovely week ahead. Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Our Community Our Year 4 student Leon won 6 gold, silver and bronze medals in the Cacha Flor men's artistic gymnastics tournament. What exciting news!
BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, There is little to say this week over than to give our continued thanks. Attendance across primary in online learning continues to be excellent and once again the community has shown determination and resilience in difficult circumstances. At times like these, it is wonderful to see how a community unites to provide the very best for children in an unexpected situation. A huge thanks to the students, staff and parents for giving it your all. As the timeframe for returning to campus remains uncertain, as a primary leadership team, we are constantly reviewing our provision and are making changes as necessary. Indeed, we have begun this week with group phonics to ensure more bespoke phonics learning for students in Years 1 and 2. Also, if we remain online at the end of the week, we will provide online assemblies for students in Years 1 – 6. Whilst we hope to be back on campus asap, it is prudent for us to continue to monitor and evolve our online offer to ensure that it continues to be of premium quality, meeting the needs of our students to the best of our abilities. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary 6A 6A have been extremely impressive since we have moved online! The students remembered expectations and general online etiquette from the online learning days of the past, and entered last Wednesday with great enthusiasm. The punctuality and level of participation from the students has been appreciated and recognized; their efforts have surpassed the high expectations I have. A BIG thank you to all of 6A – please remind me to give you two marbles for your effort and participation. This term we started a new art topic: creating portraits using spray paint and stencils. We are going to link this to our current topic, “How have Human Rights changed throughout history? Specifically, women’s rights?” and create some fantastic portraits of inspirational women who have shaped our planet. Watch this space! At the moment we have focused on drawing portraits, using the correct proportions; then we looked at how we could change these portraits into the style of a stencil. Take a look at our work so far, and wait patiently to see the fantastic portraits we create in a few weeks! Mr Prosser BSQ – Secondary Despite the ongoing challenges, we had another extraordinary week at BSQ. Our students have once again demonstrated exceptional resilience and dedication to their studies. Attendance has been commendable across all year groups, with day-to-day monitoring ensuring that each student receives the support they need. Our dedicated teachers have been following up on lessons, providing valuable feedback, and fostering an environment conducive to continuous learning. The recently concluded Quimestre exams marked a significant milestone, and we want to express our appreciation for the hard work and commitment displayed by our students. Our educators are currently working diligently to compile grades and prepare comprehensive reports, which will be shared with you in the coming weeks. As we look ahead, we want to highlight the importance of maintaining routines, especially in the online learning environment. Establishing and adhering to healthy habits is crucial for our students' well-being and academic success. Encourage them to stay active, take breaks, and create a dedicated workspace for their studies. Next Monday January 29th, we will be holding "juntas de curso," where specific information regarding your child's progress will be discussed. Please be on the lookout for further details on this event. In these challenging times, the support and collaboration between school and home are more important than ever. Let's continue working together to ensure the success and well-being of our students. Thank you for your ongoing support. Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Our Community We want to congratulate Juan Esteban from Year 11, because he received recognition for his social action work for the poor community of Valle de los Chillos. Juan Esteban delivered 30 boxes with clothes and toys, 20 hygiene kits and 60 supplies of oatmeal and noodles, this was the product of three months of work during which he requested clothes and toys in good condition from his maternal and paternal families and friends of his parents who responded generously. Juan Esteban had the job of classifying, sheathing and packing what was received in order to make the delivery. He loaded all the material and coordinated with the community promoters with whom he organized for delivery to the community. He had the assistance of his parents to transport him to do his work. This is exciting news that shows Juan Esteban's big heart.
BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, I would like to start my newsletter this week by giving sincere thanks to all members of the community. A huge thank you to students for engaging so brilliantly with online learning, especially to our youngest students for whom this is their first time learning in this modality. Many thanks to parents for supporting your children to get online and for offering your support when needed, we understand the strain that this can put on families. Finally, thank you to our wonderful staff for the quick transition to online learning. Whilst none of us wanted to move to online learning (we always want in-person learning), the fact that we left campus on Tuesday afternoon and had a full online provision up and running by Wednesday morning gives me a sense of immense pride and was only achieved thanks to the hard work of staff, many of whom worked late into the night last Tuesday to make this happen. Whilst there is some uncertainty about our return to campus, we know we will be online until at least Wednesday. As soon as we have further information from the Ministry of Education regarding our return to campus, we will communicate with you. Finally, we understand that the current situation may have been taxing on the wellbeing of students. If you believe that your child would benefit from support from one of our school psychologists, please do not hesitate to contact either Ms. Dayana Rosales ([email protected]) or Ms. Johanna Salas ([email protected]). I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 5 Year 5 have been getting back to work on the school vegetable garden last week. After the Christmas holiday we saw a huge amount of weeds, which is a good sign as it rained when we were away. The class used some of their lunchtime to weed the garden, and I had a group of helpers who cut, washed and helped hand out some of our lovely produce to teachers. We asked everyone to send us some photos of the food they made using the school veg. Take a look at the results. Mmmmmm yummy. When we get back on campus it will be back to work for our year 5 students, who will be handing out veg to maintenance staff and cleaning staff that week. We will then be clearing some space for our next round of veg, sweat peas and courgettes! Even Nicole's (year 10) dragon was enjoying the school lettuce!! Munch munch Year 5B team. BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ Community, As we embark on this week, Mr. Hutchinson and I would like to express my gratitude to each member of our school community for their resilience and commitment during these challenging times. First and foremost, a sincere thank you to our students for their remarkable engagement with online learning. Over the past couple of days, we have witnessed a massive attendance, and we expect nothing less in the coming days. We appreciate their adaptability, and their dedication to their studies has not gone unnoticed. We commend their efforts. To the parents, we extend our deepest appreciation for your unwavering support in facilitating this transition to online learning. A special note of gratitude goes out to our dedicated staff. Many staff members worked tirelessly into the night to ensure a smooth shift, and their dedication has not gone unnoticed. On a positive note, I would like to inform you that Quimestre exams are running as scheduled and are proceeding normally. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate through this period of online learning. Additionally, I want to assure you that our dedicated team of living leads and tutors is actively monitoring online lessons. They are committed to providing support and ensuring that the learning experience remains engaging and effective for our students. Our living leads and tutors are also conducting regular check-ins to assess the well-being of our students, both academically and emotionally. Please encourage your children to reach out if they need any assistance or if they have concerns about their studies or personal welfare. Regrettably, I must inform you that, as a precautionary measure for the safety of all students, all residential trips and cultural trips planned for this month and until February have been canceled. We understand the significance of these experiences for our students, and new dates will be set once circumstances permit. We will keep you informed. Thank you once again for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support. Together, we will overcome these challenges and emerge stronger as a resilient and united BSQ community.
Un cordial saludo, Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year! May 2024 be successful and prosperous for us all. It was wonderful to welcome students back to campus last week and learning has picked up where it left off. It is always wonderful to see how excited everyone is to see each other after an extended break. You will see that Saturday 13th January is marked on our calendar as a staff training day. Students are not expected on campus on this day, but staff will be here to complete professional training to ensure that student experience at BSQ continues to be exceptional. As is often the case at the start of a new term, there are not any updates to give but we will share key dates and events as the term progresses. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Happy New Year! I would like to take this opportunity to wish our community a healthy and happy 2024. As Living Lead for Primary and for all of us in school; the new year brings exciting learning opportunities and new challenges alike. We look forward to embracing these and working together toward our shared values of, Happiness, Caring, Welcoming, Determination, Respect and Ambition, at BSQ. In year 5, we have started off with a bang, as we go into our whole school topic this term of 'How have human rights changed history?' The children in Year 5, were separated into blue and green groups. There were certain rules that the blue group has to follow that the green group did not. This caused lots of discussion around what is 'fair'. We are looking forward to the conversations and challenging look at history that comes from this topic. Here's to a healthy, happy 2024! Mrs Woollard BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ community, As we step into 2024, I want to extend my warmest wishes to each one of you for a Happy New Year! May this year bring abundant success and prosperity to our remarkable community. The atmosphere on campus last week was truly uplifting as we welcomed our students back after the extended break. The enthusiasm and excitement were palpable, creating an inspiring environment for everyone. Starting from January 8th to January 18th, we will kick off the quimestre exams for Year 7 to Year 10 and Year 12 students. Your commitment to ensuring a smooth and effective examination process is truly commendable, and I have full confidence in the positive impact it will have on our students' academic journey. Timetables have already been shared before the break with all year groups. On the other hand, please save the following days for your calendar.
Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Our CommunityWe love Golf Our Y1 student Tomás participated on Saturday, November 4, 2023, in the U.S. tournament. KIDS GOLF-Los Cerros Club, where he obtained second place. Congratulations Tomas! A star Mila is definitely a star. She was the 12-year-old champion and reached the semifinal in 14 years of the Pichincha Masters that was played in December. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary ¡Feliz año nuevo!
BSQ – PrimaryDear BSQ community, Last week was a fun week of living and learning in the primary school. Hora: 10-2pm BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, I would like to start with a big thank you to the Year 1 and Year 5 teams for their work in organising school trips last week. Year 5 learned all about environmental systems and processes on their farm trip and Year 1 students had a wonderful time at the Interactive Science Museum. Both trips were truly enriching and helped to bring some of the concepts learned in the class to life. I wish Year 6 and Year 4 the best ahead of their trips to Parque Armenia and Cotapaxi respectively this week. Please be reminded that this Friday, December 8th, is a public holiday and therefore there will be no school on this day. Despite this, we will have students from 4B, 6A and 6B performing at Paseo San Francisco as part of the Lights On! Celebration on Friday. Our students will be performing at 7pm and there is much to do at the festival so we encourage families who would like some festive fun to attend. A huge thanks to Mr. Santiago and Ms. Maria Fernanda for giving up time on their day off! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Y3 B Year 3 have been learning all about earthquakes. The first half of term has been spent researching and learning about why and where earthquakes occur, what they feel like, how they are measured, their effects and what people can do to prepare for a possible earthquake. The students have been using and building their knowledge and skills across all subjects in this multi-discipline topic. We visited an earthquake simulator to learn what a high magnitude earthquake feels like and talked about how we felt before, during and after the experience. We also practiced safety procedures that should be followed in the event of an earthquake. Students have participated in multiple hands-on activities to solidify their understanding of tectonic plates and how their movements cause earthquakes and change the landscape. They built their own seismograph to understand how this piece of equipment measures the size of earthquakes and have been designing and building structures that can withstand earthquakes. Check this link for photos and videos: www.canva.com/design/DAF1XjzWlLw/KZGMw8NihX1YkH1Wa_PLzw/edit Ms Chamberlain & Ms Gaby BSQ – Secondary Dear BSQ Community, Last week marked a thrilling chapter in the journey of our Year 11 students, as they embraced a transformative experience while pursuing the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award. This endeavor showcases not just their academic prowess but also their unwavering dedication to personal development, leadership, and community service—a testament to the well-rounded individuals they are becoming. In tandem with this exciting pursuit, our students faced the challenge of mock exams for the IGCSE and, for our Year 13 students, the International Baccalaureate (IB). These simulated assessments serve as a dynamic platform for growth, providing invaluable insights that empower our students to navigate their educational path with confidence. As parents, you can take pride in witnessing the resilience and commitment your children are demonstrating, not only academically but also as emerging leaders with a profound sense of community responsibility. This convergence of accomplishments and challenges speaks to the vibrant and holistic educational experience we provide, ensuring your child's development extends far beyond the confines of traditional academics. The upcoming week is teeming with exciting opportunities for our younger students at Year 9. They are embarking on an educational journey to Cotopaxi, where they will have the privilege of being guided by the renowned vulcanologist, Theofilos Toulkeridis. This immersive experience promises not only adventure but also a deep dive into the fascinating world of volcanoes and geological wonders. Additionally, our students will be immersed in the vibrant celebrations of Fiestas de Quito, engaging in cultural festivities such as Cuarenta, EcuaVolley, traditional dance, and a captivating play that vividly represents the rich tapestry of Ecuadorian culture. As we revel in these cultural experiences, we are also gearing up for the first academic clinics of the year, scheduled for December 13th (from 10 am to 2pm). These clinics are designed to provide focused support and guidance, ensuring our students are well-prepared for their academic challenges. The week ahead promises a perfect blend of exploration, cultural enrichment, and academic preparation, fostering a holistic and dynamic learning environment for our students. Club de Inglés de Enriquecimiento Ciclo 2BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, It was wonderful to see students (and staff!) return last week feeling refreshed after the mid-term break. Learning was back in full swing quickly with year groups across primary embarking on new projects linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This is a unique approach to learning that we are pioneering at BSQ, with students already engaged in and enjoying their projects. On Friday (November 17th), we have our first Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs) of the new academic year. In anticipation of these, you will also be receiving the Parcial 1 reports for your children (Years 1 – 6). We look forward to welcoming you to campus to discuss the start of the academic year and your child’s progress and development so far. Finally, this Saturday (November 18th), is our annual bonfire night celebration from 4 – 8pm. We look forward to celebrating with you all! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 2 Even though we are only a few days into the new term, in Year 2 we have already begun work on our Project Base Learning (PBL) theme. We are learning about oceans and rivers and are linking the learning about this in Topic to our learning in Literacy, Art and some mathematics lessons. The children are really enjoying this thematic way of learning and have already contributed to our new labelled display in the classroom which depicts the journey of a river from the mountains to the sea. Below, you can also see the great variety of ocean life the children have chosen to include in the oceanic and coastal habitat. Mr. Graves BSQ – SecondaryDear Secondary School Community, I am delighted to share the success of our recent community projects trip where our KS3 students had the incredible opportunity to engage in meaningful volunteering at two local animal shelters. Witnessing our students dedicating their time and effort to support these organizations was truly heartening. Community service provides invaluable life lessons, fostering empathy, responsibility, and a sense of social awareness. These experiences go beyond the classroom, shaping our students into compassionate and responsible citizens. We are proud of their commitment to making a positive impact, and we encourage all students to continue embodying the values of community service in their everyday lives. This Thursday marks a significant milestone in our academic calendar as we host the first Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs) of the new academic year on November 16th. Alongside this, you will also be receiving the Parcial 1 reports for your children in years 7 to y13. We are eager to welcome you to campus for these conferences, providing a valuable opportunity to engage in discussions about the commencement of the academic year and to explore your child's progress and development thus far. Don´t forget to make your appointments with Sandy as soon as possible. On the other hand, we look forward to seeing you and celebrating the Bonfire Night, this Saturday 18th. Finally, some dates to save in your calendar,
Sending you my warmest wishes for the week ahead, Paola Montenegro Head of Secondary Year 13 Just before the holiday break Year 13 had the opportunity to dissect a lambs heart. Having the opportunities to teach lessons like this is invaluable to the students. It not only helps them learn about the internal structures of animals, but also how to use fine motor skills, team work and put into practice what they are learning theoretically from a text book. It gives them an appreciation of the complexity of an organism in a hands on environment. It is also one of the most memorable moments of their learning in Biology. They all completed the practical very well, and were able to identify the different structures of the heart. This learning will be invaluable for the mock exams in November/December.' Nadine Parker Secondary What a busy start to the year! Hopefully, everyone is back into their routine and enjoyed their break. In Living and Learning Sessions students have already looked at different learning styles and why studying is important, plus plagiarism and its consequences. We have also looked at acceptance and how we can show empathy and kindness. We are currently looking at relationships how it is normal to have an opinion different to your friends, and how to discuss this appropriately and accept these differing opinions in debate. We will soon be moving on to different types of relationships and to make sure they are positive, then celebrations around the world. Some of the topics we will be looking at in the New Year are Healthy Lifestyles, diversity, science and sustainability, mental health, Ecuadorean history and diversity. Each form will be presenting an assembly throughout the year. This gives the students a range of skills; presentation, public speaking, organisation, teamwork to name a few. Hopefully this creates a sense of ownership for the students. A HUGE well done to the year 12s and 10s who have presented already. If any parents have any specific skills that they feel would be important to share with the students in presentations please feel free to contact. Such as Mental Health, Diversity, and Relationships.... Please be reminded that we would like to ensure that we are supporting the students both as teachers and parents. We have had great success with our students collecting Botellas de Amor in partial 1. With all classes working hard to recycle loose plastic, filling bottles with crisp packets and sweet wrappers. These bottles will then be taken to create plastic bricks, with which benches, playgrounds and even houses will be built. The class that collected the most bottles in partial 1 were 7A, who will be rewarded with a pizza party on our first celebration day, Friday November the 17th. Matt Nadine Natalie Extracurricular Activities Dear Parents, We hope you are doing well. I extend my sincere apologies for the delay in disseminating this information. The school administration has been diligently formulating a comprehensive plan to ensure accessibility for the entire school community.
