Welcome ![]() After a lot of hard work, sweat and (maybe) some tears, our annual Bonfire Night Talent Show was released at the end of the week because despite the restrictions on our ability to share the event together in person, there are no restrictions at all on our creativity. Thank you to those students and staff who shared their talents with us – it was such a joy to see and hear you all. Last week the secondary student council entertainments section organised the Murder Mystery event which Mr Moors referred to in his newsletter. What a brilliant feat of teamwork and entertainment. Thanks to all the staff and students involved. Finally, of course there was the Open Choir event organised by Ms Cano and Mr Kidd. Bringing together a groups of students and staff from across the school this event enabled us to join with schools from across Latin America to enjoy singing and sharing. A strong community will always find ways to connect and these are just some of the examples of how our students and staff are continuing to grow, develop and flourish away from home. In the meantime, some of our staff (and maybe even some students) are participating in Movember. If any parents out there would like to join in, then please contact Mr Edwards on bedwards@british school quito.edu.ec but hurry as November is drawing to a close! e-Learning at BSQ From the Staff and the Students Continuing with our teachers and their stories about e-learning this new period. This week we have Mrs. Natalie Moors, Mr. Simon Newman, Ms. Belén Arellano, Ms. Natalie Sawyers and the Student Council Events Team from Secondary and Mrs. Helen Dávila and Ms. Antonella Coronel from Primary. Mrs. Natalie Moors and Mr. Simon Newman – Y7 Tutors In Year 7, we’ve been working on the positivity challenge. Each day, there’s a new challenge which you have to complete — it lasts for thirty days. This is a great way to bring a positive start to the beginning of the day! “It was fun to see others’ thoughts and ideas. It also made me feel more positive about myself and made me relax a bit more. I was thinking of doing some more mindful colouring every week.” — Lyla, a Y7 student. Many of the challenges help boost the students’ self-confidence, as everyone has at least one thing that they’re good at. This helps create a great atmosphere and makes many of the students be more positive in general and aware of others’ feelings. Some loved to reflect on good things they and others had done, whereas it simply motivated some to do their chores. Others felt a sort of commitment, and felt it gave them the tools to remain calm in difficult situations. Each activity is designed to help students think positively about themselves and help improve focus. Many students acknowledge the Positivity Challenge as a great way to encourage them to talk about their feelings and a great way of setting the right tone for the school day. Doodle Art and Identity During partial 1, year 7 students explored their identity and how they could communicate their ideas with doodles and color pencil techniques. Through a process of 8 weeks, students explored ideas and later symbols that could represent their thoughts and feelings of what make them different and similar from others. Here you can see some results of the unit! Ms Arellano Remembrance Day Year 9 did some work recently to celebrate remembrance day which is celebrated in the United Kingdom to commemorate all those who fought and died in the line of duty to keep us free during the First World War and beyond. I think you will agree that year 9 have done some fantastic research into this important day and have even linked this to the important issue of sustainability in relation to the poppies. Well done year 9! Ms. Natalie Sawyers Secondary Student Council Events Team Over the past few weeks, the events team from the secondary student council has been working hard to prepare a new, creative, event for the whole of secondary school to enjoy with the goal of alleviating the stress accumulated through a fun, interactive, mystery that the students enjoyed. Our final product was a brand-new murder mystery that was brought to life with the help of teachers, who enthusiastically became involved by submitting their own videos, scripted by us, which helped set the theme of a 1920s gang mystery. The overall student enjoyment & satisfaction proved the mystery to be a success, further encouraging the student council events team to continue planning & putting great effort to construct events such as the one we had on Friday, November 13th. We are eager to share with the rest of the school the projects we have in mind & we're ready to bring them to life to help increase student morale during this pandemic, our goal is for students to enjoy as much of the pandemic as possible despite the unfortunate circumstances. Because our goal to increase morale doesn't end with students, the events team leaves you the biggest clue to solving the mystery here, for you to try to solve in your own time. We also wish to share with you the teacher's hard work, which is why we're uploading their interrogations to a drive for you to enjoy. By: Samantha B., Student Council Events Team
Mrs. Helen Dávila – Year 1B Teacher. We have had a busy week this week in year 1B. We started our learning off by creating some wonderful 3D models using junk materials. This helped everyone learn the names of the shapes before we moved on to trickier work! As a class we worked together to build 3D nets with great success. With our amazing homemade 3D shapes, the whole class decided how many faces, vertices and edges each shape had. It made for a long lesson but everyone showed great determination to complete the work! In Topic we read a story about a little dog called Kipper who loved to go out in the rain. As our topic this term is Weather, we all talked about things we use to keep ourselves dry in the rain. Everyone had a go at designing waterproof clothing and trying it out on one of their own teddies at home. It looked like most survived the heavy downpours we find here in Ecuador. Well done 1B! Ms. Antonella Coronel – Head of EYFS Dear parents, During the previous week in Literacy, the students in Reception worked on creating short sentences with proper syntax. The children wrote letters to a zoo asking for an animal they would like to receive. The letters were inspired by the story “Dear Zoo”. What animal would you like? In Mathematics, the students learned how to measure things using cubes. They measured their heights and size of their feet. This week we are excited to learn about Thanksgiving, why it is celebrated and where. In Nursery we will end the week with a lunch to give thanks. Remember to wear your handmade headpiece! Have a wonderful week and share your “thank you” to your loved ones. Kind regards Dates for your Diary
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update ![]() Following on from our celebrations in the assemblies last week, including sharing a wonderful array of talent on show, we are now approaching the Christmas season with just over a month to the big day. This year our usual events and celebrations have had to be radically changed, which does mean that we are not able to enjoy our traditional performances from our younger students. However, the teachers have been busy planning alternatives to make sure that the children all get into the festive spirit – please watch out for announcements from your child’s class teachers. Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s Parent Meetings to discuss the content of the upcoming RSE Parent/Student Workshops. These are an important part of our continuing programme of Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) and we appreciate the time and effort it takes to support your child in this important part of their education. Children are naturally inquisitive and our role is to make sure that they have the relevant, appropriate information at each stage of their development, being sensitive to their needs and supporting them as they learn more about themselves and the world around them. These workshops take place throughout the week:
As we continue our teaching and learning online, it is important to think creatively about how we can best support our children, particularly in terms of appropriate equipment and resources. Whilst the teachers use a wide variety of strategies to ensure the students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding to practical, real-life problems, it is important to use the resources in your home to support this process. This idea is particularly relevant to solving mathematical calculations and problems, through using items you can find in your house and activities that directly relate to the learning that is happening in the online sessions. One of the best ways to achieve this is through encouraging your child to join you while preparing food for the family, measuring quantities of ingredients and helping you lay the table ready for a family meal. Give it a try – try to think of creative ways you can explore your child’s understanding of concepts in your everyday life and please do share those ‘lightbulb’ moments with us! Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update ![]() The time to rebuild a new, ‘New Now’ is in our sights We are increasingly looking to the future and becoming excited at the possibility that we may be all together again, back in our wonderful community at the school campus. We look forward as well to the opportunities again to test our student’s resilience and flexibility and add to the rich experiences they are gaining from the way they learn and problem solve as they grow towards young adults. There will be anxieties for staff and student alike with the prospect of being back on campus, and away from the comforts of home and the obvious flexibility and trappings of being able to nip to the fridge for a treat. Back at school some of these flexibilities disappear and of course more formality returns. Different pupils within the same class will have had very different experiences of the lockdown period and online learning. They will also have developed differently with how they cope and demonstrate resilience in dealing with those experiences. The same is said for our teachers who to be honest, have been amazing in being resilient and flexible in developing their systems so that they can teach and still maintain relationships. I have said it before, what we do at BSQ is extraordinary and it will be envied in other systems and countries around the world. Even with this, with the possible return, there is of course more opportunities to change and develop again. Our staff are a super set of professionals who take their professional practice extremely seriously and who are also courageous when approaching a new concept or risk. I wonder if this phase will eventually become the new, ‘new norm’? This week I have heard of students thanking staff for their time and for being so creative and going to huge lengths to provide interesting and enriching activities. They have also been thanked for perhaps finding and introducing another online platform which benefits learning. The fact that emails of thanks and even face to face (online) acts of recognition are taking place is significant, and this is reflected in the recent survey opinions which show some a level of correlation – more about this in a while. The teaching profession has been dragged forcibly into modernizing over the last 9 months and there are so many things we will be taking from what we are doing now into the school when we eventually return. It would be extremely foolhardy to just retreat back into the norms and lose the wonderful developments we have experienced. Out team are looking at this closely and seeing what we can continue with back in the classroom. It really is a very exciting time. Of course it will not all be plain sailing as some students may not feel able to jump straight back into learning immediately when they return to school. They may find it a little harder to focus due to the change in environment. The eventual return may lead to some disruption to attitudes to learning and behaviour, as pupils get used to seeing each other again. In the early stages at BSQ we will be focusing on the rebuild and the need for students to reconnect. You could argue that they will need to ‘get it out of their system’ first, before the hard task of knuckling down to the business of work begins. It is also important to acknowledge that our students in year 11 and 13 who are completing exam years, may find the challenge of starting this reconnection of learning more difficult, and experience feelings of burden with the perception of the need to catch up. Our staff have been working incredibly hard to make sure that this is not the case and as much as possible, what has gone is generally on track. These students need to trust their teachers and accept support and advice when it is offered and they will be absolutely fine. One thing that is guaranteed with our eventual return will be the excitement of reconnecting attachments that are so important with children. Friends will be together again, student-teacher relationships will be reconnected in a more personal way, adults will be able to interact professionally and socially, and you as parents will again have the opportunity to see people in the flesh and blood - socially distanced of course. We all look forward to the wellbeing gains that this will have for everyone. Do please be reassured that we are very aware of the challenges ahead with bringing staff and students back together at BSQ, and whenever this does happen, we will be prepared and we will enjoy every minute. I thought this week that I would share an example which exemplifies the quality of work completed by some of our wonderful students that has come across my desk. We really do have some super bright and talented children here who work so hard irrespective of the challenges they face. This week I would like to share Antonella’s wonderful piece of work on the Sahara Desert. It really does show her enquiry skills, her attention to detail and her presentation – Well done Antonella! As promised last week there is more information in the newsletter on the great murder mystery event – do please see the wider report prepared by our very gifted Samantha Baugh. She takes time to talk about the event and the thinking behind it, and there are links to videos and other goodies you can look at to enjoy at your leisure. There is even an additional task that takes readers on their own murder mystery. Well done to Emilio Sisa, Katherine Hoshima and Samantha Baugh, and particularly Samantha who takes credit alone for her excellent newsletter article. Maybe she needs to consider events management or journalism as a possible career? Soon we will be turning our attention to exams in the New Year and all of the hard work that students will face in the run in. I encourage you to revisit my comments previously on this. I will be writing with more details over the coming weeks about arrangements and expectations. Staff will be preparing resources and outlining revision needs for those involved. They are looking carefully at the exam scripts, balancing the need for rigor and achievability. We really do want students, especially in year 11 and 13, to really focus hard on these important exams. The outcomes will form part of the evidence process for assessment and of course, also give staff important data when considering predicted grades for exam boards and intervention needs. Staff are also turning their minds to written reports that will be due at the end of January. It is always a good time for students who may have previously had a poor report to have a fresh start. There is still time of course for everyone to make a really good impression and perhaps influence the content positively. All students have recently been surveyed on their attitudes to their selves and school. This is an important exercise for us as it gauges the feeling amongst the student body about their feelings towards their learning and wellbeing. We are very pleased, and perhaps slightly surprised, that the headlines suggest our children are happy and are engaged and feel fulfilled by their learning right now. When we consider the challenges that online learning has posed for all this is a remarkable outcome. We now go to focus groups to drill down further and this then leads to an action plan to address areas that may need attention. Very valuable work indeed! Do have a good week everyone. Lee Moors Head of Secondary From the BSQ Counselling Team This week our school counsellor, Andrea Carrera, talks about whether you really "see" your child?

Welcome ![]() As we move through this term I continue to be impressed by the positivity and resilience of all the members of our community. From the surveys we have sent out so far, responses have been strong and given us ways to improve our provision now and in the weeks and months to come as we move towards a school return. As you know, in October we ran a simulation day for staff to work through our protocols. On November 19 we will be welcoming a group of parent representatives onto the campus to do the same. This way we can also look at our plans through the eyes of parents. Next week I will be sharing a short survey with the student council so that we can also include the student suggestions as we move forward. We will keep you updated as our plans move towards completion but please – as always – do contact us if you have any questions. Parent conferences Thanks to all the parents who attended conferences with their class teachers, subject teachers and tutors last week. These meetings are always important but more so than ever now that we have so few opportunities to see our parents. You will have received advice and guidance about next steps as well as celebratory messages about the achievements made so far. Remember that it is also important to reflect on any feedback received and consider how you can move forward with it so a follow up conversation at home will always help in order to process the information fully. Thanks also to all the staff who prepared feedback and supported families to understand how to aim even higher. Again, if you have any questions or would like some more detail, please od contact the relevant members of staff by email. e-Learning at BSQ From the Staff and the Students Continuing with our teachers and their stories about e-learning this new period. This week we have Mr. Nick Kennedy and Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa from Secondary and Mr. Tomos Prosser and Ms. Antonella Coronel from Primary. Mr. Nick Kennedy and Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa – Y10 Tutors We would like to celebrate the Year 10 students who make our lessons so much more buoyant, dynamic and joyful by turning on their cameras and microphones. It is not only other students that miss the face-to-face interaction and dynamism of the classroom - teachers do as well. Most of us teachers thrive on human interaction. So it makes an enormous difference to all when students have their cameras rolling and microphones buzzing with wisdom and good humour. So thank you especially to the following Year 10 students, who always make an exceptional effort to interact, engage and make online learning a pleasure for us all. Jhoana, Ana Paula, Lucas, Domenik, Jossue, Barbara. Bernarda, Maria And also thank you to Carlos, Daniel, Federico and Martin who are using their cameras more and more frequently. Mr. Tomos Prosser – Year 4A Teacher Recently in 4A, we have been focusing on creativity. Just before our break, the students completed some artwork on koi carp (as we had been studying Japan). Using a variety of koi art, the students chose their media and designs for their fish. As a class, they created a wonderful range of designs. We were very impressed! The theme of creativity continued this week as the students designed posters to showcase their understanding of “MRS GREN” (the criteria for whether something is living or non-living). The posters showed some great organisation and artistic skills. In our literacy work, creativity has been shown through using their imaginations. We are currently studying how to write blog-posts. This week the students did a great job imagining that they were travelling around Ecuador, visiting famous places. We learnt how to correctly form paragraphs and how to link the two topics together. Creativity is slightly harder to achieve in maths; however, 4A have managed to look at maths in a variety of ways and answer with in depth descriptions. This has been achieved whilst learning all about multiplying and dividing by ten and hundred. Well done on some great work recently, 4A! Ms. Antonella Coronel – Head of EYFS Dear parents, Thank you for joining us at the Parent-teacher conferences last week. It was great to share with each of you how your child has been progressing over the duration of term 1. We look forward to the next opportunity to do so. Over the last week in Nursery, the children have been learning about a Hindu celebration called “Diwali, the festival of lights” and it lasts for the duration of 5 days. To deepen the student’s understanding of this celebration, we read the story of Rama and Sita and throughout the week, they made mandalas, candle holders and urli pots. This week the children are looking forward to learning about Guys Hawkes and the gunpowder plot. Enjoy a great week, Kind regards Dates for your Diary
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update ![]() I hope that you have all managed to speak with your child’s class teachers at the recent Parent Teacher conference and discussed their progress, attainment and areas for development. This focus on getting valuable feedback about their learning is really important for each student – without knowing at which stage they are at with their learning in different areas of the curriculum and their next steps, they are not able to focus their efforts and practice the knowledge, skills and understanding that will support their continuing development. The staff here at BSQ are always available to give you specific feedback about progress and ways that you can support your child to develop in certain areas. The most obvious is in the learning sessions themselves, where the teachers use a variety of strategies to establish understanding and to focus their support where necessary. They use the poll function, public and private chat and the microphones to ask explicit questions relating to the learning objective, plus ask the students regularly if they understand or need support. It is extremely important that we encourage our students to be reflective and willing to say when they do not understand a concept or piece of learning and need support. In fact, teachers find that this targeted support is more effective in the learning process when a student has highlighted themselves that they find a concept difficult and that they require consolidation or further practice of the skill. This then means that the student is able to articulate the area that they are stuck on and we can then work out which developmental stage that they need support on. As we have shared many times, we learn through making mistakes and then correcting these mistakes after further learning or practice – it is rare to get things correct the first time we try them! I would encourage you and your child to seek this feedback regularly and share your mistakes and misconceptions as regularly as your successes. You will have already received details about the proposed RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) workshops for parents and students in Years 1 to 6. The first part of this process is to share with you the content and structure of these workshops on Thursday 19th November at your normal Parent Session on your child’s class canvas page. This will be an opportunity for you to hear about this workshop in detail and to ask any relevant questions. The actual workshops will then be held the following week, with both you and your child present. If you have any questions about this, please direct them to Miss Vasilokonstantaki for Years 1 & 2 and Miss Dean for Years 3 to 6. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update ![]() Tolerance We are increasingly as a global society needing to operates more on a platform of tolerance. There are many countries around the world at the moment who are having to tolerate attitudes outside the norm, actions which are ordinarily unacceptable, or opinion which can on occasions shock. The political climate currently in some countries is really highlighting this. The United Nations celebrates World Tolerance Day this week on Monday. There are many famous figures in the World who have demonstrated tolerance for the good of a wider issue. In this process they may have made many sacrifices. The world renowned civil rights leader, Mahatma Gandhi demonstrated tolerance in the face of many challenges and even violence throughout his life. As teachers and as parents we guide our children and constantly encourage them to show tolerance and understanding and allow others to express views and have their say in whatever process is at hand. Often as children they are quick to show intolerance about things that they do not agree with or understand. This magnifies as they go through the rigors of adolescence and we as parents and adults need to increase our own tolerance levels as a result. The opportunity to be part of a community that is caring and inclusive insists upon democracy. Democracy itself is challenged if tolerance is not prevalent. BSQ students aspire to many qualities and all who depart on their journeys as adults are armed with many attributes to make them extremely successful. I for one would hope that they are tolerant of others views and behaviours, allow others to express their opinions and add some form of democracy to everything that they are involved in. I am very pleased to report on the wonderful opportunity parents and staff have had to meet and discuss current performance and areas that students could improve at the parent teacher conferences this week. I was particularly pleased by the number of meetings that staff had. There is clearly lots of support for our children and I am extremely aware of how useful the staff find your support. There are so many things that students need to deal with right now and all will present challenge and allow them to experience adversity – it is part of being at school and part of the lessons learnt on the journey to adulthood. What is important is that the correct level of support and care is applied to help them through and opportunities such as the PTCs are arguably the best platform. Thank you for your support on behalf of all the staff. We would like to extend our congratulations to Nicolas for receiving offers to study Psychology at the following institutions next year: Queen Mary University of London and City, University of London. Tomás and Martinna have also sent applications off to University of Oxford and Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. We look forward to updating you with more successes in the near future! I had a strange email this week where I was asked if I minded being murdered tomorrow? Yes, this is absolutely true. I am very thankful for such a talented school council who have arranged an amazing murder, mystery event for students as part of enrichment activity. I have not given the game away as the publication is after the event. I look forward to finding out who the fiend was that ended my life at such a disruptive moment. Thanks to Ms Sadotra for her guidance on this with the school council and for checking my availability for my downfall in my calendar. Be aware of pictures and reports on the event here next week. You may have noticed one or two members of staff adorning a new moustache this week. This is an event called Movember which sees people growing facial hair in aid of charity to tackle research and raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. The movement is now becoming global and it is good to see this in South America. I know that Mr Edwards is working on an event to frame this as a focal point, so do please look out for the arrangements. We hope that everyone can donate and also adorn a moustache on the day, whether in pen or the real thing. For more information on this charity and the issues they are tackling please find it here: https://movember.com/ I am excited by the fundraising efforts and the prospect of the whole school in moustaches on the day. A serious event and theme, but also lots of fun. Have a great week everyone. Lee Moors Head of Secondary From the BSQ Counselling Team This week our school counsellor, Andrea Carrera, talks about how to give children consequences that work.

In this particular session she made reference to expert and deliberate practice leading towards mastery. Here are the three simple things you should do:
It’s very simple and although this example was from music practice, it can be applied to anything from riding a bike to developing algebra skills. Perhaps the hardest part is focusing entirely – shutting out all distractions and working until you are happy. We can be so easily distracted from our goals but as parents we can certainly help students to build a culture of concentration – particularly by supporting them with feedback when they ask for it. e-learning at BSQ LAHC – Wellbeing Conference With thanks to our Y13 students Martinna, Nico, Tomas, and our SSD team for leading a successful conference about wellbeing as part of the LAHC conference series. What an incredible achievement to design and lead an online conference session for other students and teachers with such confidence and poise. From the Staff and the Students Continuing with our teachers and their stories about e-learning this new period. This week we have Mrs. Patricia Tufiño and Mrs. Alejandra Miranda and the Student Council from Secondary and Mr. Chris Leadbeter and Ms. Antonella Coronel from Primary. Mrs. Patricia Tufiño and Mrs. Alejandra Miranda – Year 13B Tutors Year 13 B students are experiencing challenging times as part of their journey towards the completion of their IB Diploma Programme, for this reason, the last few weeks have been demanding because students must meet deadlines for examination papers, one of them was his extended essays. Moreover, students must continue with the development of regular classes, lessons, homework and everything that concerns completing the contents of each subject. In addition, they must develop complementary activities that allow them to complete the CAS hours, which the BI requires. To do this, students propose projects that are within their reach to fulfill, for example: Spirit Week. The IB Diploma Program develops students with an upright profile, above all with an international mindset, so that students are capable of transforming the society in which they live in. The BSQ´s environment offers them all the opportunities so that they can develop social, self-management, communication, research and thinking skills. This is appreciated in a practical way with the participation of Y13 students in the activities of the Student Council or in the CAS activities. During tutoring periods, at LLS we have covered topics of great interest such as Internet safety to issues of digital resilience, the attitude and good disposition of the students even allows personal ideas to be exposed without any reservation and with a high degree respect, a situation that as tutors pleases us immensely. We are also looking for all the strategies to support them and help them organize themselves, and in this way guarantee the success and fulfillment of all the challenges that they have to face in this last school year. Secondary Student Council BSQ from Our Bedrooms: How Has Online Learning Impacted Our Community? The Covid-19 pandemic plunged into our lives unexpectedly, bringing with it irreversible consequences and modifying almost every aspect of existence. Among these is education - the most substantial part of every student’s life and the mission of every teacher - both learning and teaching experiences have been completely transformed as well as our renowned warm and close-knit BSQ community. In the midst of the new school year, there has been no opportunity to take a step back and listen to ourselves, steadily slowing down for a few moments, we now have the opportunity to fully realise the sudden changes undergone and reflect on how to best adapt to our new reality. Perhaps the most apparent difference in the online classroom is the lack of physical and visual stimulations from our peers and teachers - after all, communication is only 7% verbal. Professor of psychology Albert Mehrabian conducted studies that showed how body language and tone of voice make up the remaining 93% into what constitutes most of our day-to-day interactions. Having this sense of communication completely stripped from our lives sends us into an unmotivational and isolation spiral, in which we lack the human contact so essential for personhood. Sense of perception is the most common way we acquire knowledge - looking, smelling, touching, feeling… and according to TOK teacher Mrs Madden, this is the most overwhelming lack of online school. As a way to counteract this, students could contribute by turning on cameras in every class, even without being prompted to. This way teachers will not be talking into a seemingly empty void and we can attempt to replicate in the slightest the warmth of in-person interactions. However, as are many school occurrences, turning a microphone or camera on could be a very daunting aspect for many; Year 7 student Nina Sherwood has coined it one of her biggest worries of online school. As a way to break down the cold barrier of a screen, it is essential for teachers to create a positive atmosphere in the canvas conference - just as much as they would in person - encouraging and inspiring students to turn on cameras and microphones might just be the confidence boost they need to actually do it. Furthermore, with new teachers and new students joining, our community has expanded and it is crucial for those newcomers to fully integrate into BSQ and the only way of truly doing so is by recognizing each other’s faces through a screen, and doing so until the day where we might be able to see our new friends in person. A remote classroom undoubtedly takes a toll on human interaction, however, just as important is the quality of education being transmitted. Both online teaching and learning prove to be extremely challenging - internet problems, lack of clarity and lack of concentration are all issues being faced by students from Year 7 all the way to Year 13. Tomás Rodriguez and Martin Castañeda, two Year 13 students, have both revealed their worries in terms of final IB examinations; fears that their futures might be jeopardized by circumstances out of their control are completely valid, and present in all of our minds. To fully optimize our online learning, teachers have expressed their willingness to accept emails until our understanding becomes concrete. Organizing a useful online notebook is also crucial for minimizing loss of material and lack of consistency - in a similar way, teachers sending out the material before a class could be just as helpful. Allowing the students to have access to the content in advance proves to be extremely helpful in both the organization and the effective learning of the students, improving the clarity of classes and inviting students to engage more even outside of conference calls. Though unnatural and foreign, this intense shared experience has evoked massive amounts of adaptation and compromise in all aspects of education. As a community, BSQ ploughs through, learning each day more and more about how to accept the changes we have been forced to face. In hopes that we will soon be able to look into each other’s eyes once again, we continue to develop our online experience, enhancing our communication through the screen and having unwavering faith in each other and our unalterable circumstances. By: Sofia F., Martinna R. and Aahna B. Mr. Christopher Leadbeter – Year 3A Teacher Last term in 3A we were learning all the United Kingdom. Our topic lessons included learning about the four different countries that make up the UK, creating a weather forecast, finding out about the most popular dishes that people eat there and thinking about the many reasons that people move to the UK. In Literacy we learned about the bizarre and dangerous event of Cheese Rolling which happens on Cooper’s Hill Gloucester. The children wrote excellent and entertaining newspaper articles about this unbelievable race. In Art we learned how to draw portraits understanding proportions in the human face, which is linked to our Science lessons. We also looked at patterns, contrast and Zentangle Art. The children produced some impressive pieces in these lessons. Ms. Antonella Coronel – Head of EYFS Dear parents, This is an exciting week as we are fast approaching our first Parent-Teacher conferences of the year through Canvas. We look forward to this 1:1 time with each parent, please remember to confirm the time with your lead teacher. As part of our aim to be a culturally welcoming community, we are excited to celebrate Diwali with the students during the course of this week. Diwali is an Indian festival of lights, usually lasting for 5 days. We have a lot of great sessions planned linked directly to this celebration. Another exciting news for the Reception parents is that we now have an individual platform on RAZ-kids for both classes. You will receive information from your lead teacher soon, this will include password and username information for your child’s personal account. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me [email protected] Have a great week, Ms. Coronel Dates for your Diary

Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update ![]() Winners and more winners Well I for one had a wonderful break and I hope that whatever you did or wherever you were, the holiday celebrations were fun and if you were involved with some sort of Halloween antics, the sugar levels are now starting to come down. It is always nice to come back to a part-week as we all edge back into the business of school gradually. It was good to see the involvement in Spirit Week and there are some wonderful pictures out there of activities and costumes. Our extremely committed students in Year 12 did a marvellous job of organizing the event and even with the challenges of the online approach, money was raised for the charity. Well done to Lyla in Year 7 who not only made lots of dog treats but also delivered them to the rescue centre. I am sure that it was a great team effort in the Maddens household with her younger sister Indie and mum no doubt part of the production line. Well done to Lyla again for winning the cooking challenge. Also, to the finalists in the Halloween Gaming competition; in 1st Place Anna Paula G in year 13 and Antonella S in year 11, in 2nd place was Victoria B in year 9, and in 3rd place was Isabella A in year 9. Winners of the Kahoot quiz were Lautaro in year 13, Felipe R in year 11 and Mateo M in year 9. Well done to year 8 for their victory in the photo collage competition. Finally, congratulations to everyone who participated and contributed to the efforts in raising $250 for the Refugio Los Amigos De Isabella. I am sure that this will be gratefully received and the money will go a long way. Thanks also to Ms Montenegro for giving the expert guidance to the students in organizing their event. Congratulations also to José P who is doing marvellous things in Tennis. Jose as a member of the Tennis Association of Pichincha participated in the G2 National Tennis Tournament last week where he was placed as Vice Champion of this tournament. Jose is clearly a young talent developing for the future of Ecuadorian Tennis – well done! On the subject of exams and specifically Mocks for year 13, we have made the decision to move them from 24th November to the New Year. This is for a number of reasons. We feel that students will be better placed to respond well to these important exams after they have had more time for syllabus coverage and the opportunity to revise and prepare with more focus over the Christmas Holiday. We want to give the opportunity for targeted revision supported by resources in this time away from school. They will sit formal Mock exams at the same time that Year 11 sit theirs in their IGCSE subjects. The outcomes of these exams will give us very clear validated data to help us with considering their positions as they progress toward their targets. Year 10 and 12 will also sit exams but these will be tailored to reflect the content covered. They will be smaller assessments than those seen in the normal Mocks, but styled with similar questions. We have decided that years 7, 8 and 9 will not sit Quimestre 1 exams as the Ministry of Education has authorised teacher assessed grades. This is an opportunity to reduce the load on student and staff during these difficult times. All students will however sit Quimestre 2 exams in the summer as normal. Do look out for further information and guidance on this as we approach the time. Finally, can I ask that if you are a parent of a student in year 11 and 13, please support us by helping your son or daughter to meet targets and deadlines. There are a number of critical things that need doing right now such as individual assessments, extended essays, university applications and the basics of keeping up with general classwork. Staff are putting pressure on students at the moment and this is much needed as deadlines are fast approaching. Let us also consider the demands of Mock exams on top of this, and I am sure you can all imagine the pressure that is building. Gentle encouragement and a supportive arm around the shoulder will go a long way. “The comfort zone is a psychological state in which one feels familiar, safe, at ease, and secure. If you always do what is easy and choose the path of least resistance, you never step outside your comfort zone. Great things don’t come from comfort zones.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart Have a great week everyone. Lee Moors Head of Secondary From the BSQ Counselling Team This week our school counsellor, Andrea Carrera, talks about educating an original thinker.
Simplemente cambie yo (I) a usted.
Welcome![]() I think we can all agree that starting a learning year online is much harder than going into lockdown when all your systems and processes are already running – and particularly given the hopes we may have had in June that we would be together again in August. That was not the case and now we are still working hard together to keep learning whilst we refine our protocols and processes for the day when we can welcome you all back to the campus. This week we are able to enjoy some rest and relaxation and this is as important as ever – if not more so. The most recent LAHC conference we attended online was a keynote by Natasha Devon and her tips about mental wellbeing were really interesting too. She shared a range of different ways to self-care – to look after ourselves and keep our wellbeing muscles strong and functioning. I am sure you have seen and tried many of these methods already but a reminder is always useful. She also shared some of the really useful websites for mental wellbeing and - in particular – supporting young people so this might also be of interest to you. We were also able to listen to the well-known writer and researcher John Hattie talking about how learning from home has changed many ways we do things. He suggested three great questions and these work for everywhere really – in school, online and at home. What not try these as part of the excellent support work that is taking place at home – just change the I to you.
Have a wonderful break and see you on November 4th as usual. e-learning at BSQ From the Staff and the Students Continuing with our teachers and their stories about e-learning this new period. This week we have Ms. Sara Avent, Mr. Rodrigo Samaniego and Y13A students from Secondary and Mr. Kevin Dobson and Ms. Antonella Coronel from Primary. Ms. Sara Avent, Mr. Rodrigo Samaniego – Year 13A tutors The last week or so has been extremely challenging for Year 13. It saw the deadline for their Extended Essays, an intensive 4000-word research project which gives them the opportunity to research a topic they are particularly passionate about. This is a part of the core component of the IB DP and can be extremely challenging. Various Internal Assessment deadlines have added to this challenge pushing students in their self-management skills. Despite all of these challenges and pressures, our Year 13s are also completing and participating actively in various classwork and homework assignments. Although these times are challenging, the successful completion of these tasks can be hugely rewarding and develop in our students’ skills that will serve them well when they move onto the next stage of their lives. With the recent completion of the EE deadline, Mr Samaniego and I asked Year 13a to share some of their top tips for dealing with the challenging workload presented by the IBDP, but I think these tips are well suited to any student no matter what year or program of study they are currently in. Tomas: “To manage deadlines I set alarms in my phone reminding me to begin homework or IAs. And I also have a planner in which I write the deadlines and the homework.” Gala: “I don't procrastinate and I have priorities so there is sometimes work that I don't have the time to do.” Sofia: “Manage your time carefully in terms of social and academic life - make sure there is a balance, but also prioritize.” Anna: “I think my advice would be to do what we can and if we can't finish by the deadline, do not stress about it, kindly ask for another reachable deadline and keep on going with the work.” Fabricio: “One way to manage deadlines is to have a pre-planned schedule for the whole month and add the deadlines that are given.” Maria Paz: “Trust yourself, and do not stress too much about your IAs or your extended essay, it is not as hard as you think it is, as long as you try to finish on time and dedicate as much time as possible to your work, you will make it.” Bianca: “Create a planner so that you can organize the tasks you need to complete and make sure you are giving yourself time to relax. When meeting deadlines for essays or writing tasks make sure to separate your work so that you don't feel overwhelmed. Allow yourself to have the best chance in analyzing and doing investigations in your Extended Essay and IA's.” Martinna: “Be aware of important official deadlines in advance and put them into your calendar a week before the actual deadlines. Be realistic with your to-do lists, so if you need to make an essay don’t just write “do essay”, instead write your specific steps: write introduction, complete bibliography, research x thing for paragraph 1.” Mikaela: “Use an agenda to be able to write down all the deadlines you have and to see how long you have to prepare. Have prepared ideas that you like for your IA and so it will be easier to investigate and develop your work, then you have to like the topic you chose, because if not, it will be difficult to focus or look for it.” Nico: “If you know that there is an upcoming deadline try and do a bit of work each day, instead of leaving everything until the last day. Also, try and do things early on in case more homework is sent later, for example, finish your university applications early so that you can concentrate on other things later.” Mr. Dobson & Miss Figueroa - Year 5B Over the past few weeks Year 5 have been investigating questions relating to life and migration in Australia as part of our Topic project with the grand title of “Why do people move?”. We started this by analysing an image from Australia and, using the Question Formulation Technique (QFT), children in 5B created, developed, and explored a range of questions relating to the mix of cultures and peoples in Australia. From a list of over 30 questions produced by the class, as well as a range of questions that had been asked in previous lessons relating to migration and Australia’s history, each student chose a question that they would like to investigate as part of a 3-week project. Some of the questions that were chosen included:
As you can see, many of these questions are complex and by no means have one easy answer! So, the children embarked upon a three-week journey of researching information and then transferring that information to detailed, illustrated booklets so that they could display their findings. All that is left now is for the projects to be presented to the rest of the class, a task dedicated to our final week of learning before the October holidays. Below you can see a range of the project submissions, showing the commitment and dedication to detail that 5B have put into these! Ms. Antonella Coronel – Head of EYFS Dear parents, Last week in Early years the children worked on numbers! For us, is it important that the young students learn through experiences, thus the planning document shared weekly offers a wide variety of learning opportunities the children can access through everyday experiences. The Reception class began to practise using numbers lines, some from 1-10 and others all the way to 20! In Nursery, the students worked on counting from 1 to 10 and recognising these numbers as well. Cooking and baking are great ways to encourage mathematics as well as increase vocabulary in any stage of the child’s learning adventure and because of this we implemented cooking activities during our live sessions. During the cooking sessions, each child practised counting, following instructions, sequencing, new vocabulary and fine motor skills. It was a busy week for the students and this will be an even busier short week. We look forward to seeing everyone back after the half term to continue our learning journey together! Kind regards, Ms. Coronel Dates for your Diary
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update ![]() This week we are in school for two days, finishing at 12pm on Tuesday 27th October, with a week’s break to recharge the batteries and enjoy some time with family and friends, before returning to school on Wednesday 4th November at 8am. This break also gives us all an opportunity to spend some time away from the computer and focus on different activities, such as spending time outdoors and reading, artwork and play. Although adults tend not to use the word ‘play’ to describe the activities we do for pleasure, this is exactly what many of these are. Play is when we ‘engage in an activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose’. Although adults can get extremely serious when playing a game, whether it be a board or card game or a game of sport, we do these activities for fun, to relax and without a real end-point or aim. It is extremely important over this break to encourage our children to do the same – to spend time doing things that excite and relax them, that are different from the normal things they do when they are at school and bring them enjoyment. You will already have received contact about the Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday 12th November – there are no online teaching sessions on that day, with you (and your child, if appropriate) joining with your child’s class teachers for a short conference to discuss their progress, development and next steps. Please do also contact your child’s specialist teachers for Music, PE, Spanish and Sociales directly to make an appointment if you would like to. I wish you and your family a relaxing a peaceful break and look forward to hearing about the different ways your child relaxed over the break when we return. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update ![]() Before and after We have all achieved so much this term and I still find it remarkable that as a school our students and staff have delivered learning in such an organized and effective way. I do not write this without a solid evidence base as any researcher worth their salt would do when considering results and what comes next. I look back over the previous entries to this excellent newsletter, and I notice that the themes have always been positive, and reflective of staff and student success. Over the last 2 weeks, amongst other leadership colleagues, we have been looking at the quality of teaching, learning and assessment across the school. We really are drilling down into these areas at the lesson level. I have found that every lesson I have been in the students have been super cooperative, flexible and resilient to challenge. This is not new news as I have shared this before. What has struck me is the attendance to lessons, the care and attention that students are putting into their work, and how well they are approaching the learning relationship. I have really enjoyed witnessing this and sharing the experience when reflecting with the teacher after the event. We are really privileged to have such a talented group of staff at BSQ and such eager students, who go above and beyond on the whole to please, and in that process, do the best they can for their teachers. This is beaming out form their work and from what I have seen in lessons. Well done all! Of course, it is not always the case and as in any school there are on occasion teething problems, where new expectations and consistencies are slow to come to terms with. In this circumstance I really do encourage you to raise this quickly to the phase leaders or the teacher themselves: We will do everything in our power to resolve it as quickly as possible. I would always encourage quick action as this prevents problems growing and becoming more chronic, and thus, harder to solve. I am really pleased to report that our drive to encourage the use of cameras is slowly starting to improve. Please help us by keeping the encouragement up at home, as this really is something that is imperative for developing our community and improving wellbeing. I was lucky to witness a Primary class and their focus on verbs in their literacy lesson a couple of days ago. Every student’s camera was on, they were following teacher commands on the camera and demonstrating understanding immediately. The kids were having fun, they were active, they were all included and the teacher was able to positively frame immediate feedback. This enabled the children to quickly achieve their objectives. Without the cameras these things would not have been achieved in the same way– lessons learnt for Secondary! I am pleased to hear that some of our children are spending time together in other houses and with friends for lessons during the week. This is wonderful and of course, the benefits to wellbeing are enormous. On the whole this works well, but please do support us with a little supervision occasionally, especially with younger students. We need to be careful that this does not become a distraction as well. We are in the throes of Spirit Week and the fundraising drive. Do please make donations to the students chosen charity and encourage involvement where possible. I look forward to the pictures and reports from Ms Montenegro and the team. Well done to them for their organization and for their drive in this important event. Year 13 are under an enormous pressure right now with essays, university applications and many other demands form their subject teachers. We are looking at ways we can help them organize themselves, and key staff are giving additional 1:1 time where it is needed. Please be aware of the signs of anxiety and stress at home and do pass this on if you are getting concerned. It is a tough time and we all need to work together to help them through it. Holidays are good for rest, catching up and planning ahead for pinch points. Encourage to do lists and timetables that outline their personal challenges. Often, anxiety at this stage is caused by the pressure of the size of the to-do list. There can be procrastination and inevitably with this approach, the problem gets worse and far more serious to solve. If you make a start you are getting control – if you feel in control the anxiety subsides. Encourage the start and help them plan – it is so important right now. Finally, do please look out for the booking process for the forthcoming parent teacher conferences. The afternoon of the 10th and the whole day of the 12th November are put aside for this. If you have a teacher who teaches your son/daughter 2 subjects, then I have asked that this is covered in the same meeting. You will be given your appointments in plenty of time prior to the event. Teachers have been asked to set independent learning activities where lessons have been impacted. Any questions or concerns do please contact Sandy who is coordinating this: [email protected] Have a great week and half term break. Whatever you are doing, do please be safe and have a great time. Have a wonderful week everyone. Lee Moors Head of Secondary From the BSQ Counselling Team This week our school counsellor, Andrea Carrera, talks about learning from mistakes: why we need to let children fail.
Welcome ![]() Recently a number of staff at BSQ attended a keynote presentation as part of the Latin American Heads Conference annual conference. Of course, whilst I was lucky enough to go to Mexico City last year and attend in person, this year the conference was online and what that meant was that many more staff could attend. The keynote was led by Ellen Mahoney from Sea Change Mentoring and the Circulus Institute. Much of the discussion focused on resilience and how to build and develop it during this year and beyond. There were some great tips around boundaries and control that we could all benefit from. I hope that you have seen some of the pictures of our staff testing out the processes and protocols that will keep us safe when we return to our campus. Whilst there is still no certainty about when that will be, we are confident that we will be prepared to welcome staff and children alike in the near future. e-learning at BSQ From the Staff and the Students Continuing with our teachers and their stories about e-learning this new period. This week we have Mrs. Claire Maudsley and Y12 & 13 students from Secondary and Mrs Patricia Thompson, Mr. Teddy Mercer and Ms. Antonella Coronel from Primary. Claire Maudsley – Science Secondary Teacher | Year 9 Tutor Year 9 have made an incredibly positive start to the year. We have a new student who has joined us this year, Shira, who has been made to feel welcome and has made a fantastic start contributing to the class. Welcome Shira! Participation has been outstanding, with students keen to join the student council and take part in activities within the school. The candidates for student council wowed us with their speeches and presentations, with Maria Victoria and Doménica being elected. Congratulations as well to Anastasiia who came second in the House talent competition and well done to Pietro Janssen for being a well-deserved runner up. In LLS we have covered topics from internet safety to presentation skills, with the students always enthusiastically participating and sharing their ideas. In science the whole of the class produced some amazing individual project work, presenting them to the rest of the class and are now looking at magnetism. As their science teacher I have been pleasantly surprised by their enthusiasm and hard work and look forward to seeing what else they produce this year. Well done year 9. Spirit Week This 2020, year 12 & 13 as part of CAS, we have decided to organize a virtual Spirit Week, taking place on the 23rd, 26th and 27th of October. The main objectives are to heighten the sense of school spirit on campus and collect funds for a NPO “Refugio Los amigos de Isabella”, an animal shelter located at the North of Quito. We chose this refugee as we deeply care for the stray dogs and understand how difficult it is to help them in times of isolation. We want to do our part in the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of stray dogs even at long distances! For that reason, we have prepared several activities related to Halloween. However, in order to participate we kindly suggest you to donate between $3 to $5 dollars to the shelter by a deposit or a transfer. Our goal is to collect $ 700 dollars!!!! During the days of Spirit Week, students will participate in a several events:
And it is also the best time to dress up!!! So, pay attention:
Hand in hand, together we can change the lives of 200 hundred dogs!!! If you have any questions please contact [email protected] or Mrs Montenegro [email protected] ![]() Mr. Oliver Kyle – Year 6 Teacher Year 6 have been enjoying the online learning over the last few weeks and we have come to the end of a few projects. Here are some of the highlights: Literacy – We have finally finished our myths and written our Published Pieces. There have been plenty of points for development and discussion so do ask to read your child’s work! The photo shows an exert from a first draft of one of our number – a wonderfully descriptive first paragraph but, like all writing, there are points for development – what would you give as their Next Steps? Email me your ideas! As a class, we are now using Mondays to focus on our sentence and grammar – particularly past tense which many children find tricky, but everything’s tricky when first you start out – and it doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Art – We have also come to the end of our work on Outside Female Artists of North America and our gallery is up and running on Art Steps – get in touch if you would like the link. The children planned, created, and wrote about their installations, which they placed in an outside space in or near their home. The themes ranged from what made them happy, to the power of the elements, their feelings during this time of pandemic, and many featured environmental issues. The photo´s show exerts from the work of Sofia Dipinto (changing elements) and Andre Fernandez (water conservation). Read more about both of these installations - and everyone else’s - at our Art Steps site! There’s always more going on than time allows to mention but should you, or someone you know, want more information on what we’re doing in our virtual classroom, or if you want to come and join a lesson, then do get in touch with us at my email: [email protected], our door is always open. Take care of each other, keep positive and keep learning! Mrs. Patricia Thompson – Reception A Teacher The Reception children are now settled and well on the way in the term producing some amazing activities. We have been getting to know each other and finding out about each other's families. Talking about who is in our family and which country we come from. We also talked about our favourite things such as food and colours. The children have been working hard to make their family tree and share pictures of their family, including their pets with their friends. Some families were small and close, and others were huge, with pictures of great grandparents. With all having unique qualities. The children are having fun learning with phonics and have started to format letters and structure sentences about their families. Kind regards, Patricia Mr. Teddy Mercer – Reception B Teacher Students in Reception B have almost completed their first term of school for this academic year, marking yet another milestone in their educational lives. Miss Renata Vásconez and I are simply amazed at the flexibility, determination and enthusiasm shown by our students and parents. Well done, everyone! As we reflect on this term's learning and celebrate our achievements, here are some of our favourite moments from Autumn 1:
This is just a snapshot of what we can do in Reception B, the best is yet to come! Wishing all of our families a safe, enjoyable mid-term break. Mr. Teddy Mercer & Miss Renata Vásconez Ms. Antonella Coronel – Head of EYFS Dear parents, The Early Years students have been working diligently on their three finger grip skills. In reception the teachers have created activities to encourage writing numbers and their names. In Nursery during our live whole class sessions, the children have been using playdough as a means to strengthen their hand muscles and practise finger movements before moving on to using pencils. The pictures below are excellent examples of the playdough activity we have been working on, in this case we made animals, such as a turtle and a spider. It is also a great opportunity to rehearse number formation. Kind regards, Ms. Coronel Dates for your Diary
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update ![]() As we approach the half-term break (school finishes at 12pm on Tuesday 27th October, returning on Wednesday 4th November at 8am), the whole BSQ community needs to reflect on the progress we have made this academic year, despite the challenges of learning online and only having virtual contact between each other. In particular, our students have demonstrated resilience and determination to succeed, engaging with their teachers and peers and participating enthusiastically in their learning. Although every student and adult sometimes struggles with this new style of learning, we have all developed new systems and routines to support our daily lives, with the support of our friends and family. An important part of this process has been taking time to connect with our support groups, whether they be colleagues, friends or family, wherever they may be. It is imperative that we retain this contact with our community, through whichever media is most appropriate; we all recognise the happiness that an unexpected phone call or message from someone you have not had contact with for a while brings us. Please take the time this week to reconnect with someone in your own community of colleagues friends or family and enjoy the happiness that this will bring to them. This week you will receive details about the plans for Spirit Week, which is organised by a group of Secondary IB students. The planned events run from Friday 23rd October until Tuesday 27th October. Please also remember to record the Parent Teacher Conference date of Thursday 12th November. On this day, there will be no lessons and you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and ongoing development with their teacher. You will have already received details about choosing a suitable time for this meeting with your child’s class teacher, on your child’s Class Canvas page. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update ![]() Building our community to improve learning and wellbeing As a school we pride ourselves on being progressive and we take a serious approach to the ongoing development of our teaching and how this impacts learning. Currently, we are in the process of looking at this to see where we are all placed on our journey towards Mastery. One of our current focus areas due to the fact that we are still online is how we are using technology and resources. One of the most influential theorists in education currently, and who is extensively published is Doug Lemov. We as a school have spent much time developing his teacher skills as a package at BSQ for our staff. He has recently been interacting with global teaching opinion on twitter about the use of cameras and the benefits of these as part of the online teaching and learning. There are many views on whether or not cameras should be used and there are sound arguments on both sides of opinion. Our team at BSQ really do support his opinion that cameras are critical in the process of developing a loving, supportive and purposeful learning community. I took time this week to share this with students in assembly and our staff. A community, and in this sense the teachers conference is very important and should be structured so that it is inclusive and something that children can get a feeling of belonging and acceptance. This is simply a fundamental factor of learning! If teachers can see their children and speak to them verbally, face-to-face – opposed to texting through a chat – the teacher can be more personal in their interaction. The child will feel seen and important and perhaps loved, as this allows the gentle and caring attention that children need. The teacher can see things such as misunderstanding, or a lack of equipment or materials. It allows the teacher to quietly give more personal support. The children will feel more connected to their teacher and belonging is a powerful thing; doing these things really makes the child feel that they are important and seen. Our teachers will now be asking students to turn cameras and microphones on as we feel that this is extremely important. I have started the process at school by encouraging teachers to encourage use and their students to simply turn them on. I ask that you help this by encouraging use at home. If you pass by the screen, just check to see if the camera is on. Help us by gently encouraging this and point out the benefits. Also, in assembly this week I had the opportunity of finally giving my gratitude and thanks to students and staff for their achievements so far this year. I shared the quote that ‘Great things never came from comfort zones´. You sons and daughters are developing a number of strengths from our learning at the moment. It is not necessarily a position of comfort. They are working hard to develop and sustain great relationships, they are working hard on their tasks, they are cooperating and showing flexibility and they are developing a real level of resilience. These are all things that will stand them in great stead for the future life challenges. I was extremely pleased to see the awards presented in subjects and for our values. The recipients were well deserving and I was particularly pleased to see a few new students in the list. Well done to those recipients, praise indeed. We look forward to the fun activities of Spirit week which is almost upon us. This is on Friday, Monday and Tuesday before the half-term week. There are lots of wonderful activities to look forward to Including opportunities to dress up. Do please support the students and their ideas by participating and contributing. The chosen charity will most certainly benefit from your generous and kind donations. We look forward to refreshing ourselves with our half-term break. Please remember that Tuesday the 27th will be a 12.00 finish for all. Finally, you will receive some contact over the next week about booking appointments for the Parent Teacher Conferences that are due to be held on the 12th November. Tasks will be set by teachers for independent study at home to allow the time in the day for appointments. Please look out for this and ensure that you make your appointment with staff when they release their appointment booking sheets. Have a wonderful week everyone. Lee Moors Head of Secondary From the BSQ Counselling Team This week our school counsellor, Andrea Carrera, talks about child´s mental health: parental role
Sr. Teddy Mercer y Miss Renata Vásconez Srta.
Welcome ![]() I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend and some family time away from the computers. Despite the four-day week last week there was still a great deal of activity, learning and development going on at the school. Just look at all our activities in this newsletter alone. Schools are always places of high energy and interaction and certainly there is much of that still taking place despite our absence from the school site.
I know lots of you are concerned about the next steps in terms of returning to the campus and I wanted to update you on what we are doing at BSQ.
These actions will not give us a return date but will equip us with a clear focus on the specific site challenges and the ways in which we can ensure excellent learning and safe living as we move forward. In terms of the survey responses I know that many families were hesitant about returning at various points during the coming months and mainly because more information is needed to be able to make that decision. Completing the actions above will provide some of that detail but first and foremost in our planning s the safety or staff, students and parents. We will keep you posted. e-learning at BSQ From the Staff and the Students Continuing with our teachers and their stories about e-learning this new period. This week we have SSD and Ms. Hayley Dean and Ms. Antonella Coronel from Primary. World Mental Health Day The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. This year's theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is 'mental health for all'. BSQ is committed to fighting stigma and supporting Mental Health. Ms. Hayley Dean – KS2 Lead | Year 4B Teacher In 4B we have been learning all about the different features of an advert, including rhetorical questions, bossy verbs, powerful adjectives and opinions. We used all of these features to write and perform our own adverts for magic hats. We decided what was magical about our hats and then used our fantastic new knowledge to try and sell our magical hats. Watch our videos below. - which hat would you want?
Ms. Antonella Coronel – Head of EYFS Dear parents, In EYFS, the past week was dedicated to the topic “My family”. From this topic children worked on new vocabulary. They children also got to study about their family and the members consisting of it. To support their understanding, teacher’s suggested a family tree activity and these are the highlights of the week. What a great way to learn about the people we love and where we come from. It is also an opportunity for the children to learn about what makes their own family unique. Thank you for another fantastic week of online learning, we are so proud of the amazing work the children have been doing so far. We are happy to see their progress and share this with you. Have a great week, Kind regards Ms. Coronel Dates for your Diary
Emma Newman Principal Being BSQ – Primary Update ![]() In this week’s newsletter, I would like to focus more on the role the adults at school and at home play in each student’s education, in particular how we can support each student to make progress and achieve the very best they can. There are many ways we can support each student, from ensuring they have enough sleep, nutritious food, exercise and play, all of which are possible while we are online and learning remotely. Another critical element that we can support our students with is how we offer guidance and support when they find something challenging or difficult. As parents, we should view our role in this process as a mixture of facilitator, teacher and participant, making sure that we allow them time to explore this imaginative side of their personality but also ensuring they have a clear structure for their formal learning. With many of you continuing to work from home, this can be difficult to achieve each day, but please do make time each day to share your child’s learning, give guidance and support as necessary and of course some valuable positive feedback about their achievements. We can also support our students in this process by showing them different ways to solve a problem and find examples of the skill or concept that we are trying to master. The teachers at BSQ will give suggestions and advice to their students on how to improve their skills and understanding in the future, often revisiting concepts to make sure that all their students are ready to move onto the next phase of their development. The next formal opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and areas for development will be at our Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday 12th November. Please note, there will not be any classes on this day and you will join with your child’s class teachers for a 1:1 appointment. We will send further details of how to sign up for a meeting time next week. However, please do always contact your child’s class teachers to discuss any concerns or ask for guidance with supporting your child’s development and progress. As you know, for the coming academic year, the Ministry of Education has given every school in Ecuador extra advice and guidance about the collation of evidence and the reporting procedures for students in Years 1 to 13. This guidance includes the change to four partials of ten weeks each (previously we had six partials) and continues to include an element of parent involvement in the grade given. For the first partial, each parent will be asked to rate their child's participation in online learning according to a rubric which has been devised by the Ministry of Education (and shared with you by email). To submit this parental grade, we have created a simple form for you to complete. You need to access this link and fill in your child's full name, class and the grade you feel best reflects their participation (from 0 to 1). This grade must be submitted before Friday 16th October - any students without a grade submitted by their parents will be automatically allocated a grade of 0.5. You must submit a different form for each of your children - when you have submitted one form, it will give you an option to submit another form or you can press on the link above again. Marcus Madden Head of Primary Being BSQ – Secondary Update ![]() Wellbeing at school A rest is well deserved! Not only are we celebrating the independence of Guayaquil on Friday but we also fast approaching our half term break. Everyone should be very pleased with themselves for their achievements so far. We really have sustained some extraordinary successes in the first half of this term. As a school with staff and students overcoming and adapting to the new norm, we all experience a level of fatigue. We are all human and there are moments that we all feel the stresses and strains. Luckily we are an extremely supportive community who centers wellbeing at the heart of all we do. There is a long road ahead and it is important that we take rest breaks on the way. This is to ensure that each of us succeed physically and mentally and to stay healthy — we must make our rest and recovery a priority. It is important that we examine what rest and recovery is so that we understand what it gives to maximize the benefits. Jen Fisher in her article exploring work life integration, sums this up well. She suggests that this goes beyond just getting enough sleep. It’s about carving out space and time to be with our thoughts, and connecting with a deeper part of ourselves. In fact, giving ourselves permission to slow down and get to a quiet space, to hear our own wisdom, and tap into our own inner knowledge is important for showing up for ourselves and the world. From this place of stillness, we can get clarity on what actions we can take to feel better about our contributions to the world. Put more simply, prioritizing rest and recovery helps us show up at our best, in every circumstance. It gives us the strength to cope and succeed, it empowers us to care for ourselves and others, and to weather challenge and changes that everyday life presents. All of us irrespective of age or responsibilities become ‘exhausted’. I use this word in a positive sense drawing a parallel to some recent gardening I have completed at my house. I was exhausted at the end of the day, my back was hurting and my hands were sore and dirty with soil, but as I sat looking at the lovely flowers and the visual improvement, I sensed a great satisfaction in getting to that point. When I rested and took time to reflect, I drew great satisfaction at being exhausted as it was worth every moment. What we are experiencing currently is hard work but let us reflect on the positives that this toil brings. Essentially, this is the valuable experience we gain form adapting and overcoming for the important purpose of educating. So why do we make time to rest and recuperate and what benefits will this time bring? When we are rested, we are more creative, productive, and are able to solve more complex problems. Our level of thinking is higher and we are able to apply this to the activities and tasks we are set. we show up to things energized and at our best, giving our full attention and engagement to whatever we are doing. You need that extra energy so that you can give of yourself to everything in a way that is meaningful to all that you do. As I have said previously, our staff very aware of the causal factors for stress in our students. This can lead to withdrawal or procrastination with work and deadlines. Much of this can be resolved by managing time and tasks. This is something that adults can find hard, but for the majority of students this requires guidance. We are all now looking at ways to help students manage the load with regard to deadlines and pinch points. As we continue online this will become more critical and it is hoped that this approach will improve things for the better. Well done to the students this week in year 7 and 10. They all managed to navigate the CAT4 testing without any major issues. Again in an online approach this presents more complications which were navigated superbly. The collaboration with staff and the planning ensured that this was a smooth event. Well done all. As far as the data outcomes go, we now have the predictive data for likely outcomes which will help us enormously with internal progress tracking. I look forward to the rest and the opportunity to reflect on the gains so far. This will arm me well when I am faced with considering the challenges ahead as we move towards Christmas. After a brief reset and recovery I will be refreshed and ready for what comes next. Have a good week everyone. Lee Moors Head of Secondary From the BSQ Counselling Team This week our school counsellor, Andrea Carrera, talks about helping your child manage stressful situations.
