Thought for the week; “I think it's very important to have a feedback loop, where you're constantly thinking about what you've done and how you could be doing it better.” Elon Musk After another excellent week at BSQ, that included our amazing IB Arts Exhibition at ‘La Esquina’, we now look forward to the future and ask for your help and support with our CIS (Council of International Schools) community survey. We are aware that there have been quite a few surveys recently, however this particular survey is linked to our external evaluation as an international school. Our leadership team, teachers, and staff at BSQ are not only interested in what you think about our school, we also want to let our external evaluators know as well. Please take a moment to complete the CIS Community Survey, which will help identify the strengths of the school and areas for improvement. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You should complete one survey per child enrolled in the school. We hope you can spare some time to help the school in its desire to improve. The survey will be available until the 31st of March. To access the survey, please click on this link: https://survey.cois.org/s3/Parent-Guardian-2022-2023-British-School-Quito If you have any questions or need support, please contact [email protected] Thank you very much for completing the survey. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ Community, A huge well done and thank you to the Year 1 team and those additional adults drafted in to support on the Year 1 zoo trip. We have had so much positive feedback from the students and parents about the trip. The students loved seeing the variety of animals and hearing about the rescue projects that the zoo has been involved in, the trip was a real success. Next Tuesday, Year 4 will also be heading out of school on a trip to the water museum which they are very much looking forward too. Last week I sent out an email confirming that next parent teacher conference (PTC) day will be taking place on Friday, January 24th. This will mean that students will not attend school on this day but can attend their PTC appointments. Work will be set for students to complete on that day through the Canvas platform. Details will be shared on Canvas this week on how you can sign up for PTC Day appointments. Thank you for ensuring that children came to school looking pristine on their yearbook photo day last week. The photos look fantastic and we cannot wait to start collating the annual yearbook. Finally, over the next three weeks, BSQ teachers will be in an observation cycle. We complete these cycles at regular intervals to conduct observations of teaching and learning to ensure that this remains at the optimum level. The last observations before the Christmas break highlighted the excellent teaching and learning that takes place every day at BSQ, and we are confident that the latest round of observations will show us the same once again. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Gender Equality Fair Ms. Anna Vasilokonstantaki BSQ – Secondary Crunch time! This the week that we all dread over the year. The staff have upload deadlines for IB and the year 13 inevitably find that the extended deadlines that they have all seemed to rely upon can no longer be issued. All of the generous chances that the staff give are no more and this week the accountability firmly lies with the students. As always at BSQ we use these experiences as valuable learning episodes. Higher stress levels and the realisation that finally what will be, will be, lands squarely with the students and sets the tone for what is to come next year. University demands independence and accountability for one’s own success. The adults stop chasing and encouraging, and the friendly and supportive key staff who mop up the tears when it has gone wrong become less evident. It is time to stand on their own two feet. For some this has been a particularly steep learning curve and whilst it is hard it is a valuable life experience. The process can be a little frustrating for the staff of course as inefficiency and poor reliability from the students ultimately lands with the poor teachers who are playing catch up usually in their own time in the evening and over the weekends. It is important that the students and parents recognise this and do all they can to support the process. I am always very grateful for those who do so. We enjoyed a wonderful evet on Friday at the Centro Commercial La Esquina Audotorio which saw our extremely talented artists and musicians present their work from their IB courses. Over the last couple of years this has been held in school, but finally we are in the more professional place to celebrate and exhibit the wonderful work our students do to staff, parents and the visiting public. Please look out for the wider information and photographs from the event. One Wednesday it was International Women’s Day and students in years 7-10 enjoyed an outstanding presentation from our very talented and confident year 4 students in primary. This was in the form of a news report on key women form history which was acted extremely well. There is certainly some talent coming through for the Primary School. The secondary staff noted this and acknowledged the example given by primary to the secondary school pupils. Well done to them and thank you very much for the wonderful experience. We are approaching a period of potential disruption with talk of protests on the horizon. We re of course taking these seriously and ensuring that we are prepared for all eventualities. As in previous occasions I have every confidence that if we suddenly need to go online this will be fairly seamless. The staff have discussed this and are planning just in case and we have considered the needs if we do. I have also written to the examination boards for guidance as this has the potential to disrupt exams if we cannot get into school. If you are a parent of years 11 or 13 please do not worry as there are always other options in case of emergencies. On the subject of exams please follow these useful links if your son or daughter is in year 11 or 13. These illustrate the exam times for IGCSE and IB and also provide useful revision preparation resources in the different subjects. Have a great week everyone! Lee Moors Head of Secondary ![]()

Thought for the week; “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” Ruth Bader Ginsberg These are busy times at BSQ! Last week we were treated to outstanding presentations by our primary students. The presentations on women’s rights and feminism were exceptional and worthy of a wider audience. Hopefully, if there are no major disruptions on Wednesday it would be wonderful to see this again on International Women’s Day. Busy as always, we have another exciting week ahead of us culminating with our IB Arts Exhibition on Saturday the 11th of March in the ‘Auditorio’ of the ‘Centro Comercial – La Esquina’. Please try to take the time to stop by and support our IB artists. You will be treated to a feast of visual and musical art. There is one more week remaining for the completion of the Orbital community survey. If you haven’t yet responded please take a moment to answer the survey, your opinions are very important to us. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Wednesday, 8th March: International Women’s Day Saturday 11th March: IB Arts Exhibition - El Auditorio del Centro Comercial La Esquina – All day David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear Primary Parents, Last week marked a fantastic week in the primary school with our Theme Week based around sustainability and the United Nations ´Sustainable Development Goals.´ Children across primary engaged with one or all of the goals and considered the actions that they can take to improve our world. Year 6 enjoyed a trip to Scala Mall to collect data on the number of single use plastic carrier bags used and Year 2 took a trip to the Chaquiñan to see the effect of plastic pollution on the natural environment. It was truly wonderful to see the discussions had by students across the school around sustainability, food security, discrimination and gender equality amongst many other things. It was also wonderful to see so many of you in attendance on Friday to attend assemblies, exhibitions and to engage with the childrens´ work from the week. Next week is another exciting week with Year 1 heading to Quito Zoo to continue their learning around animals. The Year 1 classroom has recently been transformed into an underwater world with the children dressing as their favourite marine animal last Monday. Finally, primary will be hosting our second parent teacher conference later this month. More details will follow shortly to give you ample time to make arrangements. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 2 This Week in Year 2, we have been engaging in the 'Sustainability Week'. Our focus in 'Life on Land'. We have been exploring the forest, wetland, dryland and mountain habitats through Art and Design activities. We have made topographic mountain models, dryland habitats and animals from the rainforest. Dr Shady from Pae came to talk to our class about the importance of animal adopt. While Samantha from Secondary School spoke to us about the invasive plant species the 'Black-eyed Susan'. We are learning about how to better protect these environments for future generations. Hannah Kerigan BSQ – Secondary 3rd March 2023 Where has the year gone? I cannot believe it is March already. Everyone arrived back this week well rested and we have had a fairly settled time at school. The parent teacher conferences on Wednesday were a great success and all involved enjoyed the opportunity to discuss needs and focus areas as year 11 and year 13 students approach their exams. Thank you all for your support with this with students at home for the day. The next PTC for the rest of the school is on the 17th May so please put this in your dairies. We are approaching a period of potential disruption with rumoured protests again around the corner. I am confident now that if we are in the position of having to be online again for a short while we will morph to that mode easily. Please keep a close eye on the communication form school as we may need to act quickly. At school we are considering the implications and putting contingencies in place where we think there may be need – this is especially for the key exam groups. We have unfortunately made the decision to postpone the residential events that were due to take place next week. This is the sensible decision as we cannot be assured that an immediate escalation next week will not impact the event. We have also made the decision to postpone the planned year 13 residential to Cuenca this year that was planned for June as I am aware that the parents have already arranged an event to the Beach as seems to be the tradition. Naturally, having to pay for two events so close together is a tall ask for parents and we are very happy to reconsider. This will be back on the programme next year for the current year 12. On the 17th March we look forward to the exhibitions of work for IB Art and IB Music. These events are really important elements of the assessment process and an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful talents of our students. I really hope you are able to go along and enjoy the events. Have a great week everyone! Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our Community Francisca dazzles in the United States Francisca participated in an international Olympic gymnastics' competition in the United States, called "Presidential classic USA Competition", on ESPN Disney. Francisca won 5 medals and first place in All Around with the highest score in the 11-year-old Level 2 category. Francisca is definitely a champion. Winner friends The friends Eduardo and Juan Sebastián participated in the First G2 Provincial Tennis Tournament, from February 23 to 26. They played doubles and were finalists in the 10-year-old category. We are very happy with their achievements and the effort they put into each game. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.” Peter Drucker Welcome back everyone! We sincerely hope that you had a wonderful break. We have a busy term ahead of us packed with exciting learning opportunities for our students so please make sure to check the primary and secondary sectional updates for news and events. This week is the last week to submit a favorite family recipe for our collaborative book publication with the WFP (WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME). If you would like your recipe to be consider please send it to the following email [email protected] by Monday 6th March. Just a quick reminder that the Orbital annual survey is still live and we encourage you to take the time to please give us your feedback. BSQ has always had the highest response rate amongst all Orbital Schools and we hope that will continue to be the case. Many thanks and have a great term! David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Nothing of significant note for this week but please take the time to complete the Orbital community survey. Your opinions are important to help us constantly improve the quality of service and education provided by our team. David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, We hope that you had a wonderful Carnival break whether you travelled or stayed nearby for the celebrations. My first experience of Carnival was certainly a fantastic experience. The new half term has begun in earnest and students seem revitalized and refreshed after the break, ready for the learning ahead. This half term promises to be an exciting one with many trips already planned including a Y1 trip to the zoo, a trip the park for Y2 and a museum visit in the works for Year 4. This week is also Theme Week, with every year group working on an area of the United Nations ´Sustainable Development Goals.´ We will be learning about many important things that affect our world during the week from food security to gender equality. We look forward to sharing our learning with you on Friday. Finally, after the success of the ´Semana de Pruebas´ before the break, it is wonderful to see the final preparations being undertaken for our extra-curricular programme. Those involved cannot wait to get started! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary The Student Council for 2022-2023 have been very busy so far this year! We started of the Year by sub-dividing our Council into areas that we wanted to concentrate on. They are Learning and Curriculum, Environment Focus and Friendship Focus. One of the first projects the Student Council wanted to undertake was the purchase and installation of a Friendship Bench. So that those students, who may feel the need to talk to someone or to find someone to play, with had somewhere to go. They decided to raise money during the Christmas Fayre, and raised a huge $115! We instructed the carpenter, next door to school, to hand make us a bench suitable for the children. Today, all of their hard work became a reality as the bench was delivered and proudly put into its place in school. In January, the children were introduced to the idea of creating a project with an environment focus that would be entered into a competition with COBIS Schools, from all around the world. They decided they wanted to create a Bee Garden. A plot was identified, the children raised money through a non-uniform day, where we had a wonderful array of children dressed in black and yellow. Some went the whole mile and came dressed as bees! This money was used to buy a fantastic variety of plants. The Student Council set about designing and digging. The bee garden, was very kindly, donated logs which were used for the central path, along with large stones which will be used as the garden evolves. Thank you Victor Hugo! (Year 6A) Nicola Woollard Bumblebees Bumblebee Class have been very busy bees indeed. Since the start of Reception, we have made such impressive progress in our communication skills, social interactions, physical development, maths understanding and are making impressive headway on our reading and writing journey. Ms Sole has been teaching us a lot about yoga and we have continued using breathing strategies to calm down when we need to regulate our emotions. We have been learning essential life skills in problem solving, conflict resolution and expressing our emotions in a healthy way. Through creative activities, we have been learning about the natural world around us, Ecuador, the seven continents and all the way out to our solar system! We have been using our growing phonics knowledge to begin to read and write some words and sentences related to this. We have also been developing our independence and confidence with everyday tasks such as personal hygiene, taking care of our things and beginning to use a knife and fork correctly at lunchtime. Come and say hello! Ms Lilly Lockwood, Ms Soledad Mino and The Bumblebees. BSQ - Secondary27th February 2023 We all arrived back this week after a well-deserved rest and an opportunity to spend time travelling and catching up with friends and family. The end of the Quimestre was a busy week with lots of wonderful activities for the students to enjoy. A huge thank you to Mr Butler who organised a wonderful traditional dance competition between year groups. This was outstanding and the year 13 were deserved winners under the guidance of Mrs Rueda. Not only were the students well-rehearsed and dancing to time but they looked fabulous as well with tradition dress. Hopefully the video clip of the performance will be shared for you all to enjoy. ![]()
We also enjoyed the valentines event organised on the working Saturday. It was a wonderful event organised by the student council. There was a cake competition, weddings and divorces, dancing and a wonderful picnic on the field. Well done to all involved for what was a wonderful event. Also, well done to those students who made the effort to come along. It was a fantastic community event which everyone enjoyed. On the Tuesday it was the turn of Beyond Lagartococha fund raising team with their take on valentine’s day with bakes sales, themed dress and the usual flowers, chocolates and cards. I am always impressed by the endeavour of our students when they get the opportunity to take control as they are always wonderfully organised. We have a very busy few weeks ahead starting on Wednesday this week when students will be at home in the secondary school. This is to allow time for the staff to meet with parents and students in our important exam groups of Year 11 and 13. This is the last push towards exams and we all need to work together to ensure that all possible support measures are in place to maximise success. All other students will be set tasks to do at home in line with their timetable for the day. If your son or daughter is in years 11 or 13, please make appointments with Sandy and come along with them to see all teachers to celebrated the hard work they have been doing. Your support is always much appreciated. On the 6th March we look forward to year 8 going on their residential event. The year 10 trip has been postponed until further notice. Mr Tabango will write to those impacted with the new plans in time. Year 13 arts students as part of their assessment needs need to showcase their talents in Music performances and a visual exhibition. These will be taking place in the middle of March and more detail will be released nearer the time. I do urge you all to come along and see the amazing work prepared. We certainly have some extremely talented students at BSQ. Have a great week everyone!
After all, we are the first accredited sustainable school in Ecuador! I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Reception A During the past weeks, Dragonflies learned about the Solar System and the planets around the sun. They reviewed names, size, color, shapes and facts like: "Saturn has rings." "Venus is the hottest planet." "Earth is our planet." Dragonflies were very excited to share their knowledge about the planets, and to identify the initial letter of each name. They created a Solar System book, where their creativity was shown using different materials to represent each planet. Finally, they made their best effort to copy the names of each planet to complete their book. This was a great activity to practice different skills like Literacy, Maths and motor skills. We are very proud of our Dragonflies! Enjoy the pictures! Fran Our Community Mila did it again! Mila won singles and doubles. on a long tournament. Thought for the week; “Everybody has talent, it's just a matter of moving around until you've discovered what it is”. George Lucas Welcome back after the long weekend, we hope you all enjoyed a restful break. Looking back, we had a busy week with the arrival of Jonathan Dey, our Regional Head of Schools, who visited us last Thursday and Friday. Jonathan was particularly impressed by some of the new initiatives that have been taking place and was delighted to be present at the inauguration of our primary mural in front of the year 5 and 6 classrooms. Looking ahead, next week we will be offering our students the chance to try out our extra-curricular activities programme. From Monday to Thursday from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm students can get a flavor of a wide range of sporting, academic, and cultural activities. Participation for this week is completely voluntary and free of charge. Students who are interested should sign up for trial activities this week – participation will require parental authorisation for late collection (4.30 pm) - authorisation slips can be requested from Oscar Tabango. Please see the timetable of activities for our ‘semana de prueba’ which is published below in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section. Please note that only activities that have sufficient demand will be able to continue after the half-term break. We will continue to grow and refine the programme based upon student interest and demand. Once demand has been established, we will explore the possibility of bus transport services. And finally, at the end of this week’s news and updates, you will find some general information regarding volcanic safety. Have a great week everyone. It has been wonderful to see the Early Years students accessing the new ´mini city´ space and Year 2 had a wonderful time on Thursday for their Victorian theme day. Students were able to experience a small glimpse of what schooling was like 150 years ago. I think it is safe to say that they much prefer modern schooling, even though they enjoyed the experience! Additionally, the mural painted by Year 5 and 6 with the coordination of local artist Caro Vallejo, is nothing short of a masterpiece. The mural covers a large area of primary and represents the nature and beauty of Ecuador, as well as the BSQ school values. The students worked incredibly hard on this project and it was a pleasure to welcome Year 5 and 6 parents to witness the grand opening on Friday. On Saturday February 11th, secondary students are invited into school for a Valentine´s Day event. This is only for secondary students; primary students are not expected to attend school on this day. Finally, Partial 2/Quimestre 1 reports have now been shared. If you have any questions or comments about the reports, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your child´s class teacher. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Nursery Newsletter In Nursery, we are excited to share some of the changes we’ve made to our classroom layout so to provide our learners with opportunities to engage in meaningful activities that interests them, whilst also encouraging children to independently select and use resources/materials so to cultivate their capacity to concentrate and expand their own learning. Our new design and shelf activities are intuitive and conducive to our learners needs at multiple developmental stages. The designated learning spaces encourage children to find areas of personal interest. This exploration encourages their creativity, feelings of freedom, a sense of self, discovery and hands-on learning experiences – promoting learning at each child’s own unique pace. We want our classroom to help our learners develop their whole selves. Our shelves and materials organisation encourages children to develop discipline and socially conscious habits. While our space is designed for self-driven learning and age-appropriate stimulation so to support our students growing independence, as they learn to make personal choices and become more confident. Best of all our wonderful young learners helped us to create this learning space, contributing their skills to help us construct a variety of new and interesting purposeful activities e.g., our kitchen roll colour sorting activity. Ms. Gerry BSQ – Secondary 2nd February 2023 The weather gods are with us again this week and things have been much easier with less rain. It is nice to see some traditional dance coming onto the PE programme with our younger students. We are also considering how we enrich the PE curriculum further as we await the imminent arrival of the International order of equipment. Last year we made a significant investment in PE, Art, and Music, and the teachers in those areas and myself considered how we can use the opportunity to develop the experienced for students in these important areas. Mr Herrera has been slowly developing the Music area with a reorganisation of the room along with some accents to make the learning environment more stimulating. He is eagerly anticipating the arrival of new instruments and resources for this important area of our curriculum. In PE we now have table Tennis as an activity to add to the PE curriculum and in time, once the pool is complete, swimming will be in place for years 7 and 8 (to replace missing learning due to the COVID implications) The new pool is starting to take shape and the tiles are going in this week. We look forward to the opportunity to deliver swimming gala’s, swimming clubs for those students with existing talent and interests to develop further, along with specialist courses for IGCSE and generally such as personal survival and lifesaving. Whilst we are not quite there yet, the end is in site with the construction, and we are excited by the opportunities offered by this significant development which will be extremely welcome. Mr Tabango has been working closely with Mr Jones to get the Extra-curricular provision where it needs to be. We made some inroads last year with a couple of after school clubs and the residential programme initiative. I am aware of a number of strategies that are coning which includes an afterschool football club. This will inevitably lead to a fixture programme it is hoped and I am certain that our talented footballers will be excited by this prospect. On Friday morning next week (10 Feb), we will be welcoming our year 10 parents for the latest residential trip meeting. These have been a huge success. It is important that you have the opportunity to understand the programme and arrangements for the event and why we feel that this is an outstanding educational experience for all of those involved. Year 10 parents please save the date and try to attend and support Mr Tabango. Last week the new D of E recruits delivered a very successful practice expedition locally. On Wednesday this week I have the pleasure of accompanying the Silver participants as they embark on their assessed expedition to Quilatoa. This is an arduous test of navigation, hill walking, independence, and teamwork over three days. There will be some pictures and more details on their adventures to follow next week. You will by now have received the Q1/P2 full report with written comments for each subject along with a full tutor report. For each lesson there is a Partial 2 grade in our British curriculum standard and the equivalent for Ecuador. The British curriculum grade was compared to the target grade and you have been made aware of a progress position against this. Your son or daughter will be recorded as above target, on target, or below target. Each teacher will also give an effort grade which is in a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest grade. Along with the written comment you also received a Quimestre grade for period 1. This reflects performance from August to January and in Key stage 4 and 5 this was an exam, and in Key stage 3 this was achieved through a teachers assessed grade. This data all contributes to matriculation at the end of the year. Another date to remember is the 1st March when the Secondary school will be closed for the day to allow teachers time so that they can meet the year 11 and 13 parents to discuss exam performance and key focus areas as students enter into final preparations for the end of IGCSE and IB. Please save this date so that you can come along and be part of the important discussions to frame support and encouragement at this stressful time. Have a great week everyone! Mr Moors Year 9 I have really enjoyed watching Year 9 grow and develop as a tutor group over the last few months. They are maturing into a great group of young people. They are working extremely well together and forging some excellent friendship groups. Since returning from the Christmas break they have a lot of change to deal with, with three new teachers, but they have taken it in their stride and are excelling in these subjects. In particular, they have been enjoying their science lessons where they have had the opportunity to complete practicals each week, cementing their practical skills, as well as working very well together in groups. They are also particularly looking forward to making dream catchers in their English class and writing an accompanying poem. Over the last few weeks I have had nothing but praise from all of their teachers. In particular, Miss. Sawyers has been very impressed with their work in Humanities. Recently they were invited into the humanities classroom, a circle of chairs around a single table. Miss. Sawyers explained to them that they would be playing a game and they had to follow the rules of each round, that whoever received the most coins would win. 14 coins of value $5 were placed on the centre table and they had to agree on how they were distributed. They all agreed on 1 each. Then round 2, 7 coins of $5 each, all, very quickly agreed went to every other person, and the next round the ones that did not receive a coin would then receive it. Round 3, 7 coins were placed in the middle, $10 each. They were told that the students who had the most coins would have the deciding vote on what happened with the coins. However, they agreed, as they had in the previous round, and shared them, giving them to those that had not received a coin in the previous round. In the final round they were simply given another $10 coin to the students with the most $s and they could then decide what happened to the coins. They agreed to share them and some students were happy to give up their coins as equality was more important to them. The fact that they chose to be equal and fair, even though the rules weren't fair, was very impressive, and goes to show how much they have matured over the last few months. After discussion of the game they agreed that it was based on real life, resources and money are not shared equally and that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, sharing and equality doesn't happen in real life. We hope that they will reflect on this activity and realise the role they have in trying to make things more equal in the world. Keep up the great work Year 9! Ms. Nadine Parker Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our Community We want to share with you with great joy that Mauricio (Y4B) and Daniel (Y4A) are part of the Junior 2 team of the sub 8 category of the Club Independiente Del Valle de Tumbaco, in which thanks to their effort, dedication and commitment they managed to get the title of Runners-up of the tournament. Daniel plays as striker and Mauricio as midfielder and Team Captain. Since the start of the tournament, they have been the top scorers for their team, taking them to the final, where they lifted the gold trophy with their team last Saturday. Cotopaxi Update Due to the recent volcanic activity of Cotopaxi, we would like to provide you with some relevant information and reassurances from the BSQ perspective:
Students experienced nature trails, looked for signs of wildlife and had a wonderful time playing together in the park. The final preparations are being put together to have Partial 2/Quimestre 1 reports ready to be sent out to parents next month. After much consultation, we have adapted our conversions between Ecuadorean and British gradings to ensure that these are fair and reasonable. Reports will be sent out by email for primary parents in the coming weeks, for Early Years parents, reports will be available to access through Tapestry at the same time. Speaking of Early Years, the new rubber flooring has been laid in the Early Years and Year 1 area, providing a softer, more inviting learning space for students. Along with the mini city (ciudad de los niños), this area is looking fantastic and broadens our horizons in terms of the wealth of learning opportunities available. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary BSQ – SecondaryJanuary week 4 It has been a very busy week with a number of opportunities for parents to come and meet with us on at school. On Monday and Tuesday, we enjoyed two further coffee mornings. These were very positive and an opportunity for myself and Mr Jones to share a few thoughts and for parents to have the opportunity to raise questions. Mr Jones and I really do appreciate your support and candid views at these events. They are a great source of ideas and information which inform our strategy. Thank you very much if you came along. We also welcomed year 8 parents on Thursday to meet with the tutors taking year 8 off to their residential at Puerto Lopez in March. Mr Tabango arranged the event to allow more discussion and consultation on the plans. Again, this was really well supported and those involved heard a little from me and Mr Tabango, and from the team representing Camps International. The residential trips are wonderful opportunities for children to enjoy time and challenge together in a residential setting away from home and school. Some of the greatest memories come from these times and perhaps some of the most important lessons are gained. Please do try to support your son or daughter when the opportunity presents itself in the form of a trip that is safely organised by the school. The year 9 students engaged in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award enjoyed their first expedition this week. It was a two-day hike which culminated in the ascent of Illalo. They were lucky with the weather, not wet or too hot. Everyone did very well indeed. Thank you of course for Mrs Davila’s leadership of the Award at the school and to Miss Sawyers, Mr Brett, and Mr Prosser for going along and ensuring that everyone was successful and safely returned. Next week the Silver group go on their assessed 3-day expedition. I am lucky to be going along to supervise with Mr Brett again, and Mrs Davila. Good luck to them all as this will be a real challenge. On Friday we enjoyed another house activity with KS3 enjoying a Futsal tournament, KS4 a Hockey Tournament, and KS5 a capture the flag event. Everyone had a wonderful time. Thank you to Mr Butler for his leadership and the staff who supported so well to secure a great event for the community. Our next working Saturday is approaching on the 11th February. This will all be themed on Valentines. The event is being organised by the student council. Please look out for the arrangements and requirements for the day. Finally, for me this week I was extremely proud to finally see our student leadership team holding the school leadership team to account and discussing matters and initiatives important to the student body. Samantha, Gael, Antonella, and Agostina represented themselves and their peers with confidence and clarity. It was very professional indeed. Well done! They will be feeding back to the wider student body next week and getting on with their gains. Have a great week everyone Mr Moors Duke of Edinburgh Our year 10 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students ventured out on their practice journey this week. After planning their route, designing a calorie rich menu and learning all about packing a bag and camp craft, they were ready for the great outdoors. Their journey began along the Chaquiñan early Tuesday morning and ended at La Guardia campsite where they pitched their tents, played some 40 and cooked a meal. The second day was a steep climb up to the cumbre of Illalo, thankfully we tb no thunder or lightning. Mr Prosser, Miss Sawyers and Mr Brett were really pleased with the way the students worked together and stayed positive. Now time to plan our qualifying trip to Pululahua. Duke of Edinburgh team. Lee Moors
Head of Secondary Botellas de amor Thought for the week; In accordance with the International Day for the commemoration of victims of the Holocaust – Friday, 27th of January "For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing." Simon Wiesenthal Welcome back to another exciting week at BSQ. Despite a few minor complications with the weather, we are very pleased to announce that we have just installed a new cushioned flooring surface in our Early Years patio area. Aside from adding a new look and feel to this area the surface will also be much safer for our youngest learners. After a series of very fruitful and engaging coffee mornings last week, we continue this week with Year 10, Years 7 to 9, and Early Years to Year 1. Please check the table below for the corresponding days, times, and location. We are pleased to announce that as of this week, once again we will be using the BSchool tracking app for all our transport routes. More information from our transport team later this week. David Jones Principal Reflections from a departing family: Our daughter ‘wowed the admission counselor during her interview with her reading and math, which is a huge credit to the work you do every day. It was wonderful to hear your views, your concerns and also the overwhelmingly positive feedback. We look forward to welcoming Early Years and Year 1 parents on Wednesday at 8am for the final coffee morning of this cycle. Early Years have enjoyed their trip to Parque Armenia today. A big thank you to Ms. Gerry Coiro and the Early Years team for organizing a trip at such short notice. This has allowed work to be carried out on the new flooring in the Early Years area. It is wonderful to see the development of this area and the wonderful new learning opportunities that have been provided. I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Carolina Vallejo This week Year 5 and Year 6 were visited by Carolina Vallejo, an Ecuadorian artist who creates many murals around Quito and the rest of Ecuador. Throughout her artwork, you gain a clear sense that she loves Ecuador, and Ecuador is one of her inspirations for creating the fantastic work. We were fascinating by her perception of art and how she approaches learning. Some quotes from her: "I am not afraid of mistakes," "I want to fill the world with colour," "I paint what I am." She gave some great advice to the students about becoming artists in the future. Her recommendations included how they should create art as much as they can, and that they should stick to what they like. Do what you love! Year 5 and 6 will be collaborating over the next few weeks to create a mural together with Carolina. This is going to be a beautiful piece of art. Mr. Tomos Prosser BSQ – Secondary January week 3 It has been another hugely successful week at school seeing the year 11 complete their important mock exams. This was off the back of a wonderful sports event on Saturday which almost did not happen. It was an extremely grey and wet start to the day and we thought that anything outside would need to be cancelled. We started in the Library with a just dance competition with everyone involved, even the teachers. It was great fun with lots of dancing and slick moves. ![]()
The bright and enthusiastic start led to the sun striking the windows through the rain drops and within 20 minutes the sun was blazing over the courts. We quickly cleared the sitting water and then enjoyed an extremely competitive volleyball tournament. After a short break we reconvened to the field for the planned athletic events which were excellently organised by Mr Butler and Mr Ruiz. Please see the photo’s below. It was also lovely to welcome so of our parents for the latter end of the morning to witness some of the events. Thank you all very much for your support. The event was a prelude to something more formal later in the year which will see us compete in Houses in a traditional athletics event. More on this to follow. This week we also enjoyed the introduction meetings for another two residential events. The trips with Camos international are firm educational trips based on the environment and sustainability agenda. By now you should have had a chance to gain more understanding of what is coming. It is important to note that these events are for the students and staff only and parents cannot be included for safeguarding reasons. Camps International is a globally respected organisation that aligns to UK adventurous activity licencing and health and safety legislation. This is the reason we have decided on them for the safety and excellent reputation they offer. The parent meetings are opportunities for you to gain a bit more information so I do encourage you to take part. This coming week staff are finalising data and written comments for the partial 2 reports. If you are a parent of year 11 and 13 there is also additional mock predicted grades and a mock exam outcome reports for year 13. There is an additional PTC for these year groups in the near future as well. It was also really beneficial to welcome the year 11 parents to the coffee morning last week. Mr Jones and I were extremely pleased by the turnout and the passion with which parents spoke. This information is critical for us as it helps us understand your viewpoints. This coming week we have three further events finishing on Monday with years 12 and 13. Please do come along and share your views and ideas. They really are welcome and valued.
Head of Secondary Thought for the week; “If life were predictable it would cease to be life, and be without flavor.” Eleanor Roosevelt Despite the weather at the start of the day, it was great to see our secondary students so actively enjoying themselves at their Saturday sports event. Based on the successes and complications of the day we are looking towards a bigger, more community-orientated Sports Day event later in the year. After an extensive analysis of our entry and exit procedures, it has been decided to allow foot-crossing entry to new families (and visitors) who need that initial contact with the school. Until we can secure more significant safety procedures for road crossing along the heavily transited Entre Valles road it will be much safer to continue with our current drive-through approach. We will have an opportunity to discuss this further during our forthcoming coffee mornings (see dates below) David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Morning Coffee Meetings: David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, After a full week back at school, students are fully settled back in to living and learning in the primary school. New enrichment activities have been chosen; new topics have begun and excitement is high across the school. After a staffing change in Year 2, it has been wonderful to see how 2A and 2B are collaborating and working together. The children have settled into their adapted situation brilliantly thanks to the excellent care of Ms. Kerigan, Ms. Cristina, Ms. Maria Gracia and Ms. Jade. I look forward to discussing the progress of Year 2 with parents during the Year 2 parent coffee morning on Tuesday, January 17th. Additionally, I look forward to meeting with Year 3 to Year 6 parents at the coffee morning on Wednesday, January 18th and EY & Year 1 parents on Wednesday, January 25th. Looking ahead we have the end of Quimestre 1 and Partial 2 reports due. These are being prepared for the end of January in line with the MoE deadlines. In February, you will receive a current grade for P2 and effort grade, along with written comments as a full written report. I wish you all a wonderful week ahead. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Year 5 This term year 5 are looking at human rights and we started off by understanding what human rights were. In groups, the class read through the list of human rights and chose one which they believed to be the most important. They had to right their reasons for choosing it and what would happen if we did not have this human right. The students took to their chairs to talk about their groups work and began some interesting conversations about what life would be like without it. Take a look at some of their work and how cool they looked, sharing their thoughts! Helen Davila BSQ – Secondary January week 2 It has seemed a little like home in the UK this week with the change in the weather. I certainly felt the chill in the mornings and the lack of sunshine. As always our wonderful students just take things in their stride. Thank you for supporting with our uniform and standards drive. Everyone on the whole is looking much better. There is a daily detention now for those students who are late to school or lessons during the day, and for uniform infringements. Well done to Miss Sanchez and the tutors for ensuring consistency here. These things are a battle sometimes but in the end these are professional and personal pride attributes that we want to see in everyone. A reminder again about the coffee mornings that are coming over the next week or so. I will be sharing some positive news about the current successes and Mr Jones will also be there with me to receive questions and suggestions. These are really important events and it is important that you have the opportunity to share parent views in the right format. This allows us to learn about the feeling out there and apply appropriate strategy if needed. The mitigations we employed to tackle the challenges we faced with the two staff who left us mid-year seems to be working very well indeed. I have been monitoring very closely with the students and they are all reporting positivity with their new teaching staff. Things are developing very quickly which we will all be reassured by. As I said last week, changes to teacher’s mid-way through the academic year are very disruptive for students and teaching staff, so it is of paramount importance that you are fully appraised with how we are mitigating the situation and updated with progress – all good so far! The events are as follows and will be held in the Gym due to the exams for year 11 being in the Library: -Year 11 --- Monday 16th Jan --- 08h00-09h30 -Year 10 --- Monday 23rd Jan --- 08h00-09h30 -Years 7 to 9 --- Tuesday 24th Jan --- 08h00-09h30 -Years 12 & 13 --- Monday 30th Jan --- 08h00-09h30 A reminder for you to park in the car park and make your way in via reception at 08.00 am on the day. You will be met and guided to the venue as we cannot use the library due to exams. On Saturday we enjoyed the sports activities for the Secondary school. It was a wonderful event and the students had a wonderful time. If you came along and supported, thank you very much. These events are important for the community and for students to gain positivity from successes, however small in front of their parents. I am sure that next week there will be wider coverage with some pictures taken at the event. A reminder again about reports. These are being prepared for the end of January in line with the MoE deadlines. You will receive a current grade for P2, a Q1 exam grade and effort grade, along with written comments in each subject. If your son or daughter fell below an MoE grade 7 in P1 we are rectifying this with recuperation activity for the small number that this involves currently to secure progress to the 7 average by the end of the year. Well done to year 11 particularly. They have endured their first formal experience of public examinations under Cambridge regulations. This is the first of two practice events before the main sessions in May. These are also a way to ensure that knowledge is being stored and recalled. They have conducted themselves excellently throughout taking every possible minute available to prepare for and revise for exams - even as they eat at lunch time. This work ethic is really pleasing for us as a team as our values are on show in abundance. Finally, a huge thankyou to the SSD team and Miss Sanchez for facilitating really important mental wellbeing sessions this week for our students. The session included advice and guidance on suicide awareness and prevention. This is a particular issue globally with teenagers and many countries are putting key age-appropriate support in for students. I wonder if a chat about the issues at home would be beneficial as this is something that should be more overt in family relationships and discussion. Often issues are hidden well and go unnoticed until something serious happens. Hopefully the sun will be back next week. Have a great week everyone Mr. Moors The musings of an exhausted, but motivated PE teacher and tutor! Dear Parents, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! I write to you as both the PE teacher and the Year 11A tutor. From my perspective as a tutor, we are now in full swing, with the mocks ongoing. As you read this, we will be halfway through with only a few days left! Across Year 11, we have been working hard to prepare them for their mocks, with sessions based on revision, timetabling, exam equipment and even how to switch off and relax! They are well prepared and are hopefully not too nervous. This group of students are extremely dedicated and hardworking, and we are expecting them to reap what they have sowed. Away from exams, as a group we are incredibly proud of them and excited for what the future holds. One upcoming event is the Galapagos trip, which Mr Tabango is working hard to organise. From previous experience, these trips prove to be invaluable. The bond you create can last a lifetime, and really help with motivation moving forward into the IB. If you are able to, I implore you to send your child! From a sports perspective, due to Covid, it’s been a difficult start returning to fixtures and tournaments. As you may have known, in the last term, we held the inaugural British School Fiesta De Quito Sixes Football Tournament, which now will run every year. We also held the British School Volleyball Tournament which was organised incredibly efficiently by Maria Veronica of Year 13. BSQ went from having no volleyball team to a fully fledged side that was competitive against the very best. A huge thank you and well done to Maria Veronica! Pictured below is our wonderful team. This term, BSQ looks to push on and cement our position as leaders in sport and community partners. Coming up we have two more football tournaments, another volleyball fixture and a girls basketball tournament. We will use these events to build platforms to hold further tournaments that will now be carried out every year, ensuring that every child at BSQ takes part in sport and in competition. I am a firm believer that healthy competition really helps to build character, and this is what I’d like to impart in my time at BSQ. Callum Butler Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our CommunityDear Parents, As a school, we are especially aware of the impact we make on the environment. Consequently, we joined the initiative “Botellas de Amor” to collect plastic bottles filled with plastic wrappers and packaging so that the organisation ‘Botellas de amor’ can recycle them converting the plastic to a construction material. For this, we ask you to please use any disposable plastic bottle, of any size, and clean it thoroughly to remove any of the contents inside it. Then, once it is completely dry, start to fill it in with any clean pieces of flexible plastic that you have at home such as crisp packets, candy wrappers, plastic bags, labels and more. We ask you to please fill the bottle until the plastic inside is very compact and NO more pieces can fit inside. ATTACHED TO THIS EMAIL YOU WILL FIND A PICTURE WITH HOW THE BOTTLES SHOULD LOOK WHEN FULL. Once you fill them up, please send them in to school with your son/daughter so we can pass them on to the organisation. What the organisation does is that they melt all the full plastic bottles to create ‘plastic wood’ that can be used to construct playgrounds, benches and even houses, which is a fantastic way of recycling plastic waste. We hope that every student will fill at least one or more bottles with plastic waste. Our first deadline for handing in the full bottles will be the last week of school before the mid-term break in February We look forward to your participation, Botellas De Amor CAS BSQ – Newsletter 18 2022-2023 Pensamiento de la semana; “Si la vida fuera predecible, dejaría de ser vida y no tendría sabor”. ¡tan lejos! ¡Muchas gracias y bien hecho a María Verónica!
Seneca Welcome back and a happy New Year to you all. We were delighted to see you returning to school with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the challenges and opportunities that a new year offers us. We are launching a new round of Coffee Mornings this month to meet and discuss areas of general interest. Please check the dates below and reserve the time in your agendas. Thank you for supporting our appeal to take extra health precautions by using face masks at school. Unfortunately, official guidelines indicate that the continued use of face masks in enclosed spaces continues to be mandatory – we will inform you when there are any changes to these indications. Anyone with cold or Flu-like symptoms should please stay at home. We now have our zebra crossing painted at the front of the school. Consequently, next week we will be starting with a hybrid approach to school arrivals and departures. Later this week we will be sending you a special informative bulletin with more specific operational details. Have a good week and a great year. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Secondary Sports Day: Saturday 14th January (see the secondary information for more details) Coffee Morning dates: David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary Dear BSQ community, Welcome back to school and to Term 2. I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break, it has been wonderful to hear of the children´s experiences over the festive period. Last week, learning was back in full swing and students settled back into the routine of school excellently. As Mr. Jones wrote, it will be fantastic to see as many of you as possible at the upcoming coffee mornings. The last round were incredibly informative for us as a school and I hope that you have seen some changes as a result of these. I wish you all a fantastic start to the New Year. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Feliz Año Nuevo! We hope you had a restful break over the holidays and the children have come back to school looking forward to their learning and the exciting things teachers have in store for them. In Year 5, we are staring a really exciting Art topic on graffiti, we are really looking forward to teaching the children this unit. On Wednesday, we got straight into work on our new topic on Apartheid and our new topic of multiplication and division in maths and writing biographies in literacy. To ease the children in to maths we did a warm up games on timestables and then had a go at a challenge, these are always enjoyed by the children and they generate lots of mathematical conversation. We have looked at a short biography on Nelson Mandela and the children have generated questions for them to write their own biography on either a parent or someone else they know. We are looking forward to our learning journey together over the next term! Nicola Woollard Year 5 Teacher and Living Lead The aliens were at BSQ for Christmas! After almost 2 years of online lessons, road improvements and restrictions, the Primary students were able to prepare, rehearse and present their original play “I want an alien for Christmas”. From Nursery to Year 5, we display, quoting one of our parent’s, a “very global view of Christmas traditions, that ended with the conclusion that these many ways to celebrate Christmas are ultimately about spending time with our friends and family”. During the Drama lessons, Year 6, our space explorers, showed their writing skills to come up with the final scene and message that conclude their journey through out the planet, demonstrating how talented they are. It was a great pleasure for me to work with all the year groups to present a delightful variety of traditions and songs as, quoting again one of our parents, a “reflection of the diversity and inclusion the BSQ community preaches and practices”. Mixing togetherthe talent from all of our students, the staff collaboration (teachers, TAs, maintenance team, admin team and cleaning team) and parents’ cooperation, we got as a result a truly unique play, the first of many for me. At the end, we learned lots from the show and came by some ideas to contemplate for the next ones, but the most important thing to consider is that we can achieve great things working together as a community. Ms Ma.Fernanda Music and Performing Arts teacher BSQ – Secondary January week 1 Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and I wish you all a very happy, peaceful, and prosperous New Year. As always with the New Year starting we are taking the moment to address some of our basic consistencies at school with regard to uniform, mobile devices and other matters that ensure we are securing our very high expectations. Each student has had some reminders on Friday and we are also ensuring that what is published in the parent handbook and the website are aligned and updated. Please look out for these updates. I thank you all for your ongoing support with this. One thing for me that I would like to highlight is the amount of chewing that is taking place. This is not welcome at school so please discourage at home as well. It is also really damaging for the environment. We have had some staffing issues to deal with over the holiday and I am very pleased with how things are working out with the welcome of Mr Ruiz in physics who is doing a fantastic job already, and with the changes in English with the significant poor health of Miss Teevan which has led to her decision to stay in the UK. Mrs Moors and Mrs Berry have new timetables to secure consistency and the ongoing excellent teaching that the students have been receiving. As always with new staff we are mentoring their arrival and the assumption of their new responsibilities. I am very pleased to announce that we will be holding some coffee mornings next week so that you can come along to meet myself and Mr Jones to hear about how well things are going, and for you to have the opportunity to address any concerns. Changes to teacher’s mid-way through the academic year are very disruptive for students and teaching staff, so it is of paramount importantance that you are fully appraised with how we are mitigating the situation. You will be met and guided to the venue On Saturday the 14th January we will be enjoying the sports activities for the Secondary school as our next working Saturday. Secondary students will be in school as normal for the morning. Please note that primary students are at home that day if you have children across both schools. The buses are running and the canteen will be preparing snacks as normal. Students will depart school by bus or via the drive through at 12.00 pm. Parents are welcome to come along and watch if they wish. Please park in the car park and make your way to the sports areas via reception. Mr Jones, myself and the Secondary leadership team will be there to welcome you. We wish Mr Ruiz and Mr Butler the best with the event. Looking ahead we have the end of Quimestre 1 and Partial 2 reports due. These are being prepared for the end of January in line with the MoE deadlines. You will receive a current grade for P2, a Q1 exam grade and effort grade, along with written comments as a full written report. If your son or daughter fell below an MoE grade 7 in P1 we are rectifying this with recuperation activity for the small number that this involves over the next week to secure progress to the 7 average by the end of the year. Good luck to Year 11, 10 and 12 who are embarking on exams this week. Especially year 11 who will be experience the full mock experience in Cambridge examination conditions. Revision should be their priority over the next week or so in addition to what they have done already over the Christmas period (hopefully!). Have a great week everyone Mr. Moors The Art of Mistakes: Draw, erase and repeat The two times Academy Award winning Denzel Washington, mentioned once in a speech to the University of Pennsylvania: “If you don’t fail, you are not even trying”. The recognized actor and director, refereed to the countless times he had to failed in his life in pursue of his dreams. I constantly repeat this quote to my students, in hope to push them to fail good. We continue to be surrounded by a culture of guilt and shame in many aspects of our daily life and we tempt to forget that the only way we learn anything in life is by failing. It is very common that people usually perceive art as an activity “only for the talented ones” and many times I have encounter adults and students feeling some sort of shame about it, like they lack some sort of inherent skill that they should have. Many of my students also assume that I was just born with some sort of almighty gift given to few. I tend to smile and through our studies at school I usually prove them that they can also learn any artistic skill by practicing over and over again. I was personally just a little bit more skilled than my classmates and I see now that many of my students draw way better than I used to at their age. From my point of view, one of the biggest problematics that me and other teachers face with our students, is the culture of instant gratification and idea of perfection that is strongly influenced through social media to our students. In this occasion, I would like to share some artworks made by couple of our Art students, that have shown constant persistence, humbleness and tenacity in their practice over the past months. They have shown me and most importantly, they have shown themselves to be capable, strong willed and patient. Lee Moors Head of Secondary Our CommunityGo Mila! Mila won in December the Pichincha Masters Championship under 12, Grade 1 (only top players from Pichincha are invited), Mila is 10, so this was one category above her age. Music is life We are so proud of our students: Henry 5B, Camilla 4B and Pietro 2B who represented our BSQ student body at the Studio Ensemble end of year concert. They did an amazing job! Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Ms Ma.Fernanda Music and Performing Arts teacher.
Thought for the week; “Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Norman MacEwen We have reached the final week of this first long term and what a term it has been! Looking back over the months it is quite astonishing to recall all the events, outings and activities that have taken place. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work and dedication of all the members of the BSQ community, for without everyone giving so generously of their time, passion, energy and commitment we most certainly would not have achieved so much. Thank you all. We wish you the very best seasonal greetings and hope that after this week you will find the time to enjoy the presence and company of those nearest and dearest to you. In the meantime, we hope you will enjoy the festive events, celebrations and surprises that we have install for you this week. David Jones Principal Dates for Your Diary As always please check this section carefully and ensure that you have all the details in your calendars. Monday, 12th December 2022: Christmas Show Friday, 16th December 2022: Last day of classes. School closes at 12 pm Wednesday, 4th January 2023: Start of Term 2 David Jones Principal BSQ – Primary We may be in the last week of school before the holidays but living and learning in primary is still in full swing. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Christmas Bazaar this Saturday, enjoying the food, singing and of course, the wonderful crafts made by the primary students. Rehearsals for the Christmas Performance have taken place and we look forward to welcoming you at 2pm this afternoon for the performance itself. Many thanks to Ms. Maria Fernanda Espinosa for all of her work in organising and coordinating. Last week, Year 6 enjoyed a trip to Parque Armenia. Whilst there, they created some fabulous artwork, great work everyone! Additionally, Early Years and Year 1 also have their trip to The Happy Farm tomorrow. Children are incredibly excited and for many of them, this is their first ever school trip! Have a wonderful week. Lewis Hutchinson Head of Primary Fiesta De Quito Football The British School romped to victory in the inaugural Fiesta De Quito football tournament. Great fun was had by all, and we over at The British School are especially thankful to SKAS, Pachamama and Fundacion De Luz for participating. We look forward to hosting these schools again and battling for further trophies! Our mixed team of Year 5's and 6's showed a real zeal for football, sport and in general competition. Over 6 games, BSQ only lost one and indeed won some in emphatic fashion. Goals were free flowing from our alliteratively named front three of Luca, Lucas and Luciano- both a defenders and commentators worst nightmare! Our midfield of Niko and Nicholas showed excellent dynamism and our defence of Emilia, Mila, Victor, Dario and Pedro held firm like a rock. Did I mention our goalkeepers!? Hadid and Bruno, two BSQ diamond finds, only let in 2 goals between them over the 6 games despite facing a relentless onslaught from Fundacion De Luz and SKAS. Overall, the tournament was a great success, and we will use this to springboard further events and further opportunities for our very talented students. It was great to see the parents attending, which I believe is the first time in a very long time. Here's to many, many more! I would like to give a special thanks to admin and maintenance. The logistics ran perfectly and the pitch was spotless. Also, thanks to Oscar and Fernando for refereeing. Best wishes, Mr Butler BSQ – Secondary December week 2 It was lovely this week to finally see our students competing with other schools on the sports field. This was a great success and it was good to see so many parents supporting. This occasion was for the older Primary students who were victorious. The scenes at the end with the children and their parents were ecstatic. This is just the starting point and Secondary will be hosting some volleyball matches very soon and Mr Butler and Mrs Ruiz will be arranging an under 14 and an under 17 event in the new year. In March the next round of residential events will be taking place with year 8 and year 10 going off to their events. We will also be looking forward to the year 11 and 13 events in June. This week the final administration and contracts have been agreed with Camps International and there should be contact from them via Mr Tabango about the events and the payment plans. Please do ensure that your son or daughter supports the event as these are hugely rewarding for the children. ![]()

Well done to year 13 for the completion of their Mock exams. They have done really well personally and organisationally. I hope that the outcomes are what they deserve. On Saturday whilst the Christmas Bazaar is taking place the secondary staff will be marking, moderating and starting the process of writing the Mock report for each student. This will have detailed what went well, what could be better and a focus going forward for each subject. I imagine that in some cases this will require some parent intervention so we do look forward to this. On January 1st the deadline for applications to US and UK universities passes so this week we are focusing on the final needs of the applications. My aim is to have all of this don before the end of term so that it does not hang over the holidays. If your son or daughter is planning to study overseas, this week is particularly important. Please have a discussion about intention and what is needed as my time is limited and I would prefer not to have any last minute issues on New Year’s Eve. You will have noticed that the country is now insisting on Masks for internal spaces again due to the rise in COVID cases and Influenza A. On Monday we will be insisting on these so please ensure that your son or daughter comes to school with one. We look forward finally to the end of term on Friday. This will be a celebration in Secondary with our rewards and recognition assembly and other fun activities. Please remember that this is a 12 pm finish to the day so that we can all get away to enjoy a well-earned break. Have a great week everyone and my very best wishes for a peaceful Christmas. Mr Moors IGCSE FIELD TRIP Thursday 24th November students in year 11 travelled to Quito to collect data as part of their IGCSE Geography coursework. They had chosen the hypothesis’ they wanted to test and worked in groups to collect data. The students wrote about their experiences below and photos are also below. This Thursday 24th, the Year 11 Geography class went on a trip to the Quito as part of their investigation and recollection of data. We walked around 4km from the outer urban area into the CBD (Central Business District), noticing patterns and carrying out different methods to gather information which is useful for our work. It was an interesting yet busy day for us which ended with a nice lunch at Quicentro followed by our return to school. Daniela. During Thursday of November, we went on a geography trip to Quito and investigated if it fits a model of urban land use. We travelled along residential areas to finally get to the central business district. During our travel, we collected certain data like traffic and pedestrian count, building height and environmental quality survey, due to this we could identify ify whether Quito seemed to have urban land usage like the burgess model shows. Finally we ended up having lunch at Quicentro shopping to return back to school and end our investigation. Alejandro The group were exceptionally well-behaved and represented the school in the highest regard. They demonstrated their capabilities phenomenally and I can’t emphasise how proud they should be of themselves. They showed how dedicated they are of their studies and their commitment to their peers by working in groups, they wanted to push themselves to achieve as high as possible. I would like to thank them for making the trip so pleasurable. OUR COMMUNITY GOOD JOB VICTOR HUGO We are very pleased to share that Víctor Hugo participated on the tennis tournament organized by Rancho San Francisco. He got the Vice Championship in his category. Congratulations! Además, Early Years y Year 1 también tienen su viaje a The Happy Farm mañana. ¿Mencioné a nuestros porteros?

NUESTRA COMUNIDADBUEN TRABAJO VICTOR HUGO
